The short answer: five campuses, five pieces of wording
There is no single English-test rule for the Education City campuses compared here. Each publishes its own wording, and the differences matter more than any one number:
- Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) sets no required minimum and mentions 7 or higher on IELTS as a benchmark, not a cut-off.
- Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) and Northwestern Qatar require TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo results unless a waiver applies.
- Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) says that in most cases an applicant must take the TOEFL or IELTS.
- VCUarts Qatar recommends 6.0 overall or higher on IELTS, and says test scores must be within two years of the application date.
Each campus's own admissions page was read in October 2026, and rules change, so check the current page of your campus before you book a test. This page quotes no exam fee, test date or application deadline, and it does not say what score would be enough: each campus decides that. In the tables, "not given here" means only that the page read for this comparison does not give that detail. Five campuses only: this page does not claim to be complete.
The five campuses side by side
| Campus | Wording on the English test | IELTS version and score level mentioned |
|---|---|---|
| Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) | No required minimum IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo score for admission. | 7 or higher on IELTS is among the scores the page lists for competitive applicants: a benchmark, not a cut-off. The same passage names lower scores below which it generally recommends delaying an application. Version: not given here. |
| Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) | TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo results required from all applicants, unless the waiver policy applies. | Accepts IELTS Academic, IELTS for UKVI and the IELTS Indicator; the page adds that the British Council does not currently offer the Indicator to residents in Qatar. Only your highest scores are considered if you sat an exam more than once. Band: not given here. |
| Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) | In most cases an applicant must take the TOEFL or IELTS (from the requirements page for the six-year medical programme). | Names the IELTS and says IELTS UKVI (Academic IELTS) results can be submitted. Band: not given here. |
| Northwestern Qatar | Students must submit TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo results (unless eligible for a waiver). | IELTS is one of the three tests named. Version and band: not given here. |
| VCUarts Qatar | Proof of English is required of all applicants, with some exceptions (see the exemptions table below). | Recommended: 6.0 overall band score, or higher. Version: not given here. The page says IELTS test arrangements are made directly with the British Council. |
Test waivers and exemptions: four campuses list SAT or ACT scores
Four of the five campuses list SAT or ACT scores that waive the English test. The thresholds differ, and each is that campus's own rule, which can change:
| Campus | SAT or ACT scores listed | What else the page says |
|---|---|---|
| GU-Q | SAT EBRW (the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section) 620 or higher, or ACT 26 or higher on both English and Reading. | Follows an email request plus score reports. A native-language route is also mentioned, and granting a waiver is at the discretion of the Office of Admissions. |
| CMU-Q | SAT Reading and Writing section 600 or higher, or ACT 26 or higher in both English and Reading. | Described as automatic, with no request needed. A second route, by confirming primary and native language, goes through an email to the Office of Admission. |
| WCM-Q | SAT Reading and Writing section 650 or higher, or ACT English and Reading 30 or higher. | The page says the TOEFL and IELTS can only be waived if one of these is met. |
| Northwestern Qatar | SAT 600 or more in both the Critical Reading and Writing components (as that page words it), or ACT 26 or more in both English and Reading. | Described as automatic, but the page says the Office of Admissions can deny waiver requests after review. A separate native-language route is listed for citizens of certain countries. |
| VCUarts Qatar | The page read gives no SAT or ACT waiver threshold. It lists an SAT Reading and Writing score (recommended 500 or higher) as another proof of English beside IELTS and Duolingo. | Passport holders of native English-speaking countries are exempted; some exceptions may apply (see its FAQs). |
This page cannot tell you whether you qualify: if you hold an SAT or ACT score, or come from a country a campus names, ask the campus whether you still need an English test.
Requirement, benchmark or recommendation?
The word "score" does three different jobs across these pages.
- A requirement says what you must submit. CMU-Q, Northwestern Qatar and (in most cases) WCM-Q ask for a test result, and the pages read give no IELTS band for them.
- A benchmark describes scores. GU-Q says there is no required minimum and mentions 7 or higher on IELTS among the scores it lists for competitive applicants. That is not a cut-off.
- A recommendation says what a campus would like to see: VCUarts Qatar recommends a 6.0 overall band score or higher. Its two-year limit is worded as a rule, not a recommendation.
Because they measure different things, 7 and 6.0 cannot be ranked against each other, and this page does not rank or recommend a campus. Whether a score is enough is the campus's decision.
Reading the band numbers
IELTS scores run from 0 to 9 in half-band steps. The overall band is the average of the four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking), rounded to the nearest half band: an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.
VCUarts Qatar states its 6.0 as an overall band score. For GU-Q, the page read does not say whether 7 or higher means the overall band or each skill, so read GU-Q's own page. The IELTS band score calculator shows how four skill scores combine.
Which IELTS version: Academic, IELTS for UKVI and the IELTS Indicator
CMU-Q's page says it accepts IELTS Academic, IELTS for UKVI and the IELTS Indicator, and adds that the British Council does not currently offer the Indicator to residents in Qatar. WCM-Q's page says IELTS UKVI (Academic IELTS) results can be submitted. The pages read name no version for GU-Q, Northwestern Qatar or VCUarts Qatar, so check before you book.
See Academic and General Training for the two main versions of the test, and IELTS for UKVI in Qatar for the version tied to UK Visas and Immigration.
How old can your result be, and where does it go?
Northwestern Qatar says scores should not be more than two years old, and VCUarts Qatar says test scores must be within two years of the application date, which fits the general pattern that IELTS scores are valid for two years by most institutions' policy. The pages read give no age limit for GU-Q, CMU-Q or WCM-Q. General advice, not a campus rule: work out the date your result would stop counting and check that it still falls after the date you will apply. For how results arrive, see IELTS results in Qatar.
| Campus | Age of score | Sending, as the page gives it |
|---|---|---|
| GU-Q | Not given here. | The code list gives "Georgetown University in Qatar" for IELTS, not a number (the TOEFL code is 8750). |
| CMU-Q | Not given here. | A sending code for TOEFL only and no IELTS instruction, so ask CMU-Q and your test provider. |
| WCM-Q | Not given here. | Not given here. |
| Northwestern Qatar | Not more than two years old. | Request that IELTS scores be sent electronically; the code table gives no IELTS code and says to submit a copy of the score report. |
| VCUarts Qatar | Within two years of the application date. | IELTS has no institutional code. The testing centre should send scores directly to VCUarts Qatar, and students are asked to submit a copy of their score report. |
Ask the provider you booked with how it sends results, and follow the campus page where it differs.
A checklist before you book the test
General advice. Where a campus page says something different, follow the campus page.
- Read the English-test page of your campus in full (the links are in the first table); this page only summarises it, and ask the campus about anything it leaves unclear.
- Check whether a waiver or exemption applies: four campuses list SAT or ACT thresholds, and VCUarts Qatar exempts passport holders of native English-speaking countries.
- Check which IELTS version the campus accepts, how old a result may be and where it must go.
- Book with a test provider. Where a campus names one, follow it: VCUarts Qatar's page says IELTS arrangements are made directly with the British Council. Band Booster does not register students or set exam fees or dates; the Doha page covers the test centres that IDP and ielts.org list in Qatar.
What this page does not cover
- Texas A&M Qatar. Its admissions page could not be read when this page was prepared, so it is left out. That does not mean it has no English-test rule.
- Other universities in Qatar: see IELTS for Qatar University undergraduate admission and IELTS for Hamad Bin Khalifa University, which covers scores by college.
- Fees, deadlines, other admission requirements and visas. For a visa rule versus a university's own requirement, read IELTS scores for study abroad.
Where Band Booster fits
Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutor, not a university or a test centre, and it is independent of IDP and the British Council. It has no connection with the five campuses on this page, and it does not register you for the test, set exam fees or dates, issue results or take part in admissions.
What it offers is preparation for the IELTS test. Mike, a CELTA-certified teacher based in Hanoi who scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS, teaches every lesson himself, one-to-one on Google Meet. Speaking is practised in the real three-part format and Writing Task 1 and Task 2 are marked against the public band descriptors. See about Mike, IELTS Speaking coaching and IELTS Writing feedback, or read the guide to choosing an online IELTS tutor.
The booking calendar shows each slot in your own time zone, and the booking page shows your price in your own currency before you pay (Qatar is in the higher regional price tier). A paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on your first booking, and you can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before a session. No band is guaranteed: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions.
