This page reports what Qatar University (QU) says on its own pages, read in October 2026. QU's rules can change and can differ by college and intake, so check its pages for yours. It covers undergraduate entry only (for master's and PhD programmes, see IELTS for QU graduate admission), quotes no exam fee or test date and gives no admission or visa advice. Band Booster IELTS has no connection with QU.

The table is a summary, not QU's rule. If QU's pages seem to disagree with each other, or with this page, follow QU and ask its admissions office which applies.
Who the competency rule covers
The competency requirements page says applicants to the listed colleges must demonstrate proficiency in English and Mathematics by meeting QU's minimum requirements, or pass the Foundation Program.
- QU publishes the college list at two addresses. The competency requirements page lists six colleges: Arts and Sciences (Science track only), Education (Secondary Education, Mathematics and Sciences concentrations only), Engineering, Health Science, Medicine and Pharmacy. The copy in QU's competency requirements section lists eight, adding Dental Medicine and Nursing. The IELTS figure, validity and two-semester note match on both. If your college is on neither, read its own entry.
- The college requirements page is arranged by intake. It has one table for applicants up to a given intake and another for those starting later, with the same IELTS lines in both when read. This guide prints no intake dates, so find the table for yours.
The score: IELTS (Academic Version) 5.5
On the competency requirements page, the English table lists IELTS (Academic Version) at 5.5, with TOEFL iBT 61 or above, as the minimum score for exemption. This guide does not define what the exemption covers, so read that on QU's page. The other side of the rule is the Foundation Program, which the college requirements page qualifies for some applicants (see below).
That entry names the Academic Version. The college lines say "IELTS" without a version, so if you hold IELTS General Training, ask QU whether it counts. IELTS Academic or General Training explains how the two tests differ.
Scores by college: 5.5 or 6
The college requirements page lists English requirements for five health colleges: IELTS 5.5 (TOEFL iBT 61) for Health Sciences, Nursing and Pharmacy, and IELTS 6 (TOEFL iBT 68) for Medicine and Dental Medicine. Do not carry one college's figure over to another. TOEFL options are also listed; this guide covers IELTS only. Two cautions:
- The college tables show no IELTS line for Engineering, Arts and Sciences (Science) or Education (Mathematics and Sciences). The figure QU gives for them is the general 5.5 on the competency page.
- An exceptions paragraph on the college page, for applicants who miss the required high school percentage or track, names IELTS 5.5 for a group of colleges including Medicine and Dental Medicine, while the tables ask those two for 6. The pages are not fully consistent: ask QU which figure applies.
One number: overall band or each skill?
The lines above give one IELTS figure without naming a component, so this guide cannot say whether QU reads it against your overall band, each skill, or both: check your college's wording and ask QU. It matters because the overall band is the average of the four skills rounded to the nearest half band: an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and .75 to the next whole band. For example, made-up skill scores of 5.5, 5.5, 6.0 and 6.0 average 5.75 and give an overall 6.0 although two skills are 5.5. The calculator does the arithmetic.
Validity: 2 years, counted to the first day of class
The competency requirements page lists a validity of 2 years for IELTS (Academic Version). It also says a score is no longer valid if it is older than that, measured from the start of the first day of class, and that students with older scores should retake the test. So the two years run to the first day of class of your intake, not to the day you apply.
The page does not say whether a score's age runs from the test date or the date the result was issued: ask QU and keep its answer. As general advice, not QU wording, check that your result will still be under two years old on the first day of class, using your test date to be safe; if you have not yet sat the test, allow time for the result. IELTS results in Qatar covers result timing and Test Report Form copies.
QU can verify a score and re-test you
The same page says the QU Testing Center reserves the right to verify any standardized test scores and re-test students. This guide does not say when it does so or what a re-test involves, because the lines it relies on do not.
If you do not reach the minimum: the Foundation Program
The competency requirements page says applicants who do not satisfy the minimum will be considered for admission to the Foundation Program and placed in levels by their ACCUPLACER English and QU PLACER Math scores (QU's Arabic version says admitted, not considered). Do not read either as a place for you before QU confirms your case, because the college requirements page narrows it:
- For Health Sciences, Nursing and Pharmacy, a footnote says non-Qatari applicants must meet the minimum English and mathematics requirements as a mandatory requirement for applying to the college, while Qatari applicants who do not can enrol in the Foundation program.
- For Medicine and Dental Medicine, a footnote says all applicants must meet the minimum as a mandatory requirement for applying.
So whether the Foundation route is open depends on your college and whether you are Qatari; the competency page speaks more generally, so ask QU. Two facts about the programme itself are on QU's pages:
- Foundation students must pass English and Math courses with a grade of 70% or higher to be enrolled in their undergraduate college programme (Foundation Program page).
- International students (QU's note: students from outside Qatar) must complete the programme in 2 semesters (competency section). The note adds that a student who has not passed in 2 semesters should withdraw, cancel the residence permit and leave the State of Qatar, and encourages international student-visa applicants to meet the Foundation requirements before enrolling.
This guide does not describe the courses, timetable or fees and gives no immigration advice. For wider routes, see IELTS below the direct-entry score in Qatar.
The ACCUPLACER ESL placement test
QU's placement test page says all new applicants to the colleges that require the Foundation Program, except Medicine and Dental Medicine, must take the ACCUPLACER ESL English placement test if they lack the minimum IELTS or TOEFL iBT scores. It adds that the test is a condition for registering for the English Foundation courses and can bring full or partial exemption from English courses, and that placement tests can be taken once per admission cycle by those not in the Foundation Program (QU's Arabic version says once per semester, so confirm with QU).
The Foundation Program page adds that applicants to these colleges must complete the ACCUPLACER test before registering for classes. This guide does not describe the test's format, scoring or venue: read QU's pages and ask which route applies to you.
Checking your own case, step by step
- Find your college and intake on the college requirements page and note its IELTS line, if any.
- Check whether your college is on the competency requirements list.
- Compare your result's age with the first day of class of your intake.
- If you lack the minimum, read the college page footnotes and the Foundation Program and placement test pages, and ask QU whether the Foundation route is open to you.
- Ask QU about anything left open (overall band or each skill, test date or result date, what a re-test involves) and keep its answer.
- Book IELTS with the provider you choose; Band Booster does not register students. If plans change, see changing or cancelling an IELTS booking in Qatar.
Where Band Booster fits
Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutor, not QU, a test centre or the exam board: it does not register you for IELTS, set exam fees or dates, issue results or decide anything about admission. Mike teaches every session himself, one-to-one and live in English on Google Meet; he holds the Cambridge CELTA, is based in Hanoi and scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS (see about Mike).
A session can cover Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking, with Speaking in the real three-part format and feedback in the moment, and Writing Task 1 and Task 2 marked against the public band descriptors (see IELTS Speaking coaching and IELTS Writing feedback). Written progress notes follow each session in your account. Because the overall band averages four skills, one weak skill pulls it down; as general advice, not QU's, a timed practice paper in each skill shows where the gaps are, and sessions can then target them.
Qatar is in the higher regional price tier. The booking page shows each time in your own time zone and your price in your own currency, with payment options, before you pay. A paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on your first booking, and sessions can be rescheduled at no charge up to 12 hours before. There is no subscription or package. No band is guaranteed: progress depends on your starting point and the work between sessions. IELTS fees and dates
Band Booster does not register students for IELTS, so this page quotes no exam fee and no test date. They are set by the test providers and can change: check the provider you book with.
