The short answer: two Muscat venues on the UK government list
GOV.UK's guidance, Prove your English language abilities with a secure English language test (SELT), was last updated on 12 October 2026. It links a spreadsheet, the list of approved test centres outside the UK; the edition used for this page carries the date 9 October 2026 in its file name. Under the heading IELTS SELT Consortium, the list shows two venues in Oman, both in Muscat: BC Muscat - Office and IDP Muscat. It shows no venue under that heading in any other Omani city.
For the IELTS SELT Consortium, GOV.UK names the test to book as ‘IELTS for UKVI’ or ‘IELTS Life Skills’. UKVI stands for UK Visas and Immigration. Which of the two a visa route asks for, if either, is for the guidance on that route to say; this page covers IELTS only and does not decide it.
Everything below was read in October 2026 on GOV.UK, in the UK government's list, on ielts.org and on IDP Oman's pages. Lists, rules and formats change, so confirm each point on the page that sets it before you book. This page is not visa or immigration advice, and it quotes no exam fee or test date.
Where IELTS for UKVI is listed for Oman
The two sources do not word things alike, so the table gives the names as each gives them.
| Source (as read in October 2026) | What it shows for Oman |
|---|---|
| UK government list of approved test centres outside the UK (file dated 9 October 2026) | Under IELTS SELT Consortium: BC Muscat - Office and IDP Muscat, both in Muscat. No venue under that heading in another Omani city. |
| ielts.org test centre finder, Muscat (read 24 October 2026) | UKVI Approved tags on five cards, all in Madinat Sultan Qaboos, Muscat: IDP Oman - Al Madina Plaza, CD IELTS IDP Education Muscat (Test Room) and three cards named British Council Muscat. |
| ielts.org finder, Salalah, Sohar, Nizwa, Buraimi and Sur | No UKVI tag seen. |
How to read the UK government list
GOV.UK says your result must come from a test sat at an approved test location, and this is the list it points to, so it is the first thing to check. This page reads nothing into the rows beyond their names. GOV.UK names two tests for the consortium, ‘IELTS for UKVI’ and ‘IELTS Life Skills’, so confirm with the provider which of them your session is. The list gives no test dates; ask the provider what is open.
How to read ielts.org's finder
The finder tags cards, not venues, and its names differ from the list's. Five tagged cards against two list rows is a difference this page cannot resolve, because it cannot tell which card matches which row. For a UK application, treat the list as the reference and follow it where the finder or a provider's page differs. This page reports no British Council Oman rule.
If you live outside Muscat
The list names no IELTS SELT Consortium venue in Salalah, Sohar, Nizwa, Buraimi, Sur or any other Omani city, and the finder showed no UKVI tag under those five city filters. GOV.UK says you should be able to take a test within 28 days of booking, but it may not always be at the location nearest to you. It adds that if there is no approved test location in your country, you will have to travel to another country; the list shows approved locations in Oman, two of them under the IELTS SELT Consortium. So the IELTS venues to look at are the two in Muscat, and the provider's booking page shows what is open. This page gives no travel advice.
What GOV.UK says your result must be
GOV.UK sets three conditions for your results to be accepted:
- The test is on the list of approved English language tests.
- It was sat at an approved test location.
- It was awarded in the two years before the date of your application.
The same page also says test results are valid for 2 years from the date the test is awarded. A result awarded more than two years before the date of your application does not meet the third condition. This page cannot say how the rules apply to your case, so read the guidance for your route.
ielts.org adds a rule from the test side: it says all tests taken to secure a visa for UK Visas and Immigration must be taken at an ‘official IELTS test centre’, where ID is verified and all elements of the test are overseen.
Is IELTS for UKVI a different test?
IDP Oman says IELTS and IELTS for UKVI are exactly the same test in terms of format, content, scoring and level of difficulty, and that the only difference is that an IELTS for UKVI test is approved by the UK Home Office for work, study and migration purposes. Around the test, ielts.org sets two conditions: the ID checks at an IELTS test centre described above, and the fully digital format.
Digital only, and no Writing on Paper
ielts.org's March 2026 notice on test delivery says the Secure English Language Test (SELT) for UK Visas & Immigration purposes will only be available in the fully digital format. Its page on IELTS on computer and Writing on Paper adds that Writing on Paper is not available for test takers taking an IELTS for UKVI test. If you have been practising handwritten answers, a teacher's general advice is to switch to typing for this test.
If a finder card seems to list a delivery option that conflicts with this, this page cannot explain why. Follow ielts.org's statement above and ask the provider.
The ID you bring on test day
GOV.UK says your identity document must be current and valid, an original rather than a photocopy, include a photo of you, and match the information you gave when you booked. For tests taken outside the UK it accepts a passport, a convention travel document, a stateless persons travel document and, in the country where the card was issued, valid photographic government-issued identity cards. Emergency travel documents are not accepted as proof of identity.
This page does not say which Omani document counts: compare your own document with GOV.UK's list and use the ID that your booking names. Our page on booking IELTS in Oman covers ID rules for ordinary IELTS bookings only; for this test read GOV.UK's rule above.
Booking and timing
GOV.UK says to check the SELT provider's website to find out when tests are available and to make sure the test centre is open. If you have any questions, it says to use the website and not to contact the test centre directly.
This page quotes no exam fee or test date; the provider sets and changes them. It states no results time for IELTS for UKVI in Oman, because none of the sources read gives one; ask the provider how long a result takes and whether that fits your application plans.
The English level for your route
Which English level a visa route needs is for GOV.UK's guidance on that route to say, and this page states no IELTS score as the requirement for any route. One example: GOV.UK's Skilled Worker knowledge of English page asks applicants to prove their English to at least level B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It says someone who had the visa before 8 January 2026 and is applying to extend or update it needs level B1, and that a person switching from a different visa needs level B2.
IDP Oman's IELTS for UKVI page, as read in October 2026, lists a minimum CEFR level of B1 and a minimum of 4.0 in each of the four components for the Skilled Worker visa. That B1 matches GOV.UK's line for some extensions, not its general line of at least B2, so do not copy a score from a provider's table; read GOV.UK for your own route. This is not visa advice. A visa minimum is also separate from a university's or programme's admission requirement; both vary and change, and IELTS scores for study abroad keeps them apart.
A checklist before you book
General advice drawn from the points above, not guidance from GOV.UK, IDP, the British Council or ielts.org.
- Read GOV.UK's guidance for your route for the test name and English level it asks for.
- Use the provider's website to confirm that your session is IELTS for UKVI at a location on the list, rather than contacting the centre.
- Practise on screen: type both Writing tasks in one 60-minute sitting.
- Read the provider's terms on fees, dates, changes and cancellations, and check your ID and the two-year rule against the sections above.
Where one-to-one lessons with Mike fit
Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutoring service. It is not a test centre, it is independent of IDP, the British Council and the UK government, and it does not register you, hold a place, set test fees or dates, or issue results. A lesson is practice with a teacher, not an IELTS test, and it does not replace an IELTS for UKVI test sat at an approved location.
IDP Oman describes IELTS for UKVI as the same test as IELTS in format, content, scoring and difficulty, so practice follows the usual test: Speaking Parts 1, 2 and 3 in the real format, and Writing Task 1 and Task 2 marked against the public band descriptors, typed rather than handwritten. Mike holds the Cambridge CELTA, teaches every lesson himself from Hanoi, and scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS (about Mike). Lessons are one-to-one, live on Google Meet, in English, with feedback during the session. See IELTS Speaking coaching and IELTS Writing feedback; both are written for Vietnam, so ignore their prices.
Oman is in a higher regional price tier than Vietnam, and the booking page shows your price in your own currency, with the payment options, before you pay. A paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on your first booking. There is no subscription and no package. No band is promised: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions.
