This page sets out what three US pages say about the English test they name, as read in October 2026. They are examples, not a list: there are many licensing and credentialing bodies, rules differ by profession and by route, and pages change. Naming a body here does not mean Band Booster IELTS has any link with it, and nothing on this page is advice about which test you should take. Open the body's own page for your route and, if anything is unclear, ask the body before you book a test.
Check before you book. A result is only useful if the body that asks for it accepts that test. The IELTS USA page on ielts.org tells test takers to check with their organisation which test is required before booking, and the three examples below show why: one lists IELTS Academic among its options and two name other tests.
Three examples and the English test each names (read October 2026)
The three sources are of different kinds: the pages of two organisations (AAVSB and NABP) and the page of one state board. That is why the title uses "licensing bodies" loosely. None of the three is an IELTS page, and each one decides for itself.
| Example | English test the page names | Other points on the page |
|---|---|---|
| Veterinary graduates: AAVSB's PAVE page, the international pathway for veterinarians | Three options: the TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, or an alternative based on schooling. For IELTS Academic: Reading 6.0, Listening 6.5, Speaking 7.0, Writing 6.0 and overall 6.5. | IELTS Academic can be taken in person or online. Scores from multiple score reports cannot be combined. |
| Foreign pharmacy graduates: NABP's FPGEC page | The TOEFL iBT or the OET for Pharmacy. | Only one of the two English exams is needed. The OET counts only for exams taken from a start date the page gives. |
| Physical therapy in California: the Physical Therapy Board of California's page for foreign-educated applicants | The TOEFL iBT only, in a single administration. | Other examinations may not be substituted. An applicant with a bachelor's degree or higher from a physical therapist programme at a college, university or professional training school in one of the countries the page lists is exempt from showing English proficiency. |
What the three examples show
One page lists IELTS Academic, and it lists it as one of three options. The pharmacy page names the TOEFL iBT or the OET for Pharmacy, and the physical therapy board names the TOEFL iBT only. That is a pattern in three pages, not a count of how many US bodies take IELTS, and it says nothing about any body not listed here. The practical lesson is to find out which test your body names, and from when, before you book any test.
Veterinary graduates: the PAVE page lists IELTS Academic as one of three options
AAVSB's PAVE page, for veterinary graduates, gives three options for showing English proficiency. Option 1 is the TOEFL iBT (or the TOEFL iBT Home Edition). Option 2 is the IELTS Academic. Option 3 is an alternative to the examinations, based on proof of at least three years at a secondary high school or of graduating from a professional veterinary school; the page sets out the conditions, including the language of instruction. So IELTS Academic is one choice, not the only one. Under Option 2 the page lists these figures:
- Reading 6.0
- Listening 6.5
- Speaking 7.0
- Writing 6.0
- Overall score 6.5
Even a page that lists IELTS asks more than one question, so "accepts IELTS" is not a single yes or no. Three details on the same page matter as much as the numbers.
- The version. The figures are given for IELTS Academic. Academic or General Training explains how the two versions differ.
- In person or online. The page says the test can be taken in person or online. Whether IELTS Online is available to you is a separate question, because the providers' pages differ for the US; see computer-delivered IELTS in the United States and IELTS Online and One Skill Retake at US universities.
- One score report. The page says scores from multiple score reports cannot be combined, adds that there are no exceptions to this policy, and says you must achieve all section requirements within one exam. If you are thinking of a One Skill Retake to lift one skill, ask AAVSB first whether that fits its rule; this page cannot say. One Skill Retake or a full retake explains how a retake works.
How the skill figures and the overall figure fit together
This is the page's own arithmetic, not a statement from AAVSB. The four skill figures add up to 25.5, an average of 6.375, which IELTS rounds to 6.5 under its half-band rounding. So a result that reaches every skill figure also reaches the overall 6.5. The reverse is not true: an overall 6.5 can be reached with one skill below its figure if the other skills are higher, so the overall score alone does not show whether, for example, the Speaking figure is met. The IELTS band score calculator shows how four skill scores average into an overall band. Speaking carries the highest of the four figures, 7.0.
What ielts.org adds
The IELTS USA page on ielts.org lists planning to register with a veterinary association in the US among the work reasons for which you might need an IELTS Academic test. That line is general: it names no body and no scores. For the figures, use AAVSB's page.
Foreign pharmacy graduates: the FPGEC page names two other tests
NABP's FPGEC page, for foreign pharmacy graduates, names the TOEFL iBT or the OET for Pharmacy as its English requirement, and says you only need to complete one of the two. It adds that the OET is accepted only for exams taken from a start date it gives, and that exams taken before that date do not qualify. Check that date on NABP's page before you book an OET; this page does not repeat it, so that it cannot go out of date here.
This page makes no claim either way about IELTS at NABP, so ask NABP before you choose a test. Open the page and confirm the wording yourself, because pages change.
Physical therapy in California: the TOEFL iBT only
The Physical Therapy Board of California's page for foreign-educated applicants names the TOEFL iBT, taken in a single administration. It says the board does not permit other examinations to be substituted for it. The page does not mention IELTS, and on that wording an IELTS result would not stand in for the TOEFL iBT, but confirm with the board.
The page also sets out an exemption. An applicant who has been awarded a bachelor's degree or higher in a physical therapist programme from a college, university or professional training school in one of the countries the board's page lists does not have to show English proficiency. This page does not list those countries or say whether you qualify, so read the conditions on the board's page.
This is one state's board, and this page says nothing about what any other board requires.
Physicians, nursing and what this page leaves out
This page does not cover physicians or any profession beyond the three above. Whoever decides for your route publishes its own English requirement, so read that page rather than carrying one profession's rule over to another. Nursing boards have their own English rules; they are covered on IELTS for nurses in the USA. For university admissions, see IELTS scores at US universities. Exam fees and dates change and are not set by Band Booster, so this page quotes no exam fee or test date; check them with the test centre you choose.
How to check before you book a test
- Find the body that decides: the board, the organisation running the pathway or the rule itself, rather than a forum or a tutor's website, this one included.
- Open its English-proficiency page for your exact route. The three examples differ from one another.
- Note the test and its version, and whether the page lists more than one option. For IELTS, that means Academic or General Training.
- Note the figures: an overall band, a figure for each skill, or both, and whether they must come from one sitting.
- Note how the test may be taken (in person or online), whether a retake of a single skill is accepted, and whether a test counts only from a start date. If the page is silent, ask.
- Note any exemption and read its conditions; do not assume you qualify. If anything is unclear, ask the body in writing and keep its reply.
- Only then book the test with the test provider.
Where lessons with Mike fit
Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutor, not a test centre, an agent or a licensing adviser. It does not register you for a test, set exam fees, issue results or decide which test a body accepts. Mike holds the Cambridge CELTA and is based in Hanoi. He teaches every session himself, one-to-one and live in English on Google Meet. In his own IELTS test he scored 8.5 in Speaking; see About Mike.
If the body you must satisfy names IELTS, lessons can work on the skills its figures cover. Writing (Task 1 and Task 2) is marked against the public band descriptors, and Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1 in the Writing band. Speaking is practised in the real three-part format, with feedback during the session rather than days later, and Speaking coaching works against the four equally weighted criteria: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. Listening and Reading are covered too. If your body names a different test, Band Booster's sessions cover the four IELTS skills and General English, so check what that test involves before you choose preparation. No band is promised: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions.
A regular session lasts 60 minutes. The booking page shows each slot in your own time zone and your price in your own currency before you pay. There is no subscription and no package to commit to. A paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on a first booking, and you can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before the slot; a cancellation inside 12 hours is not refunded. Our page for learners in the United States covers time zones and the lessons in more detail.
