IELTS One Skill Retake or a Full Retake: How to Choose

Yes, you can retake IELTS: ielts.org says you can apply again as soon as you feel ready, and One Skill Retake may let you redo one skill, once, within 60 days if your original test was IELTS on computer at a centre that offers it. Band Booster IELTS is not a test provider: it is one-to-one online coaching with Mike, a CELTA-certified teacher in Hanoi, and prices are shown in your own currency on the booking page before you pay.

IELTS retake policy: attempts and waiting time

The British Council's results pages for Vietnam, Singapore and the UAE say there are "no restrictions on re-taking IELTS", and ielts.org says you can apply again as soon as you feel ready, adding that your score is unlikely to improve without extra work on your English. Neither gives an attempt limit or a minimum wait; when you rebook depends on test dates and how long you need to prepare.

This page draws on the providers' own pages, read in October 2026, and quotes no fees or dates.

IELTS One Skill Retake: how it works

Instead of a full retake, One Skill Retake (OSR) lets you retake one of Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking. These are the conditions on ielts.org; the IDP and British Council country pages we read match them on the main points, except where noted below:

The new Test Report Form and when OSR results arrive

You receive a new Test Report Form (TRF) with the retaken skill's new score and your other three original scores. ielts.org's guidance for organisations says the retaken score is marked "retake", the overall band is updated, and the date shown is the original test date. Both TRFs stay valid, you choose which to use, and provider pages say validity runs two years from the original test date.

Timing differs: ielts.org and IDP Vietnam and Singapore say 3 to 5 days; the British Council's China FAQ says usually 1 to 5 days, possibly longer. Its Vietnam, Singapore and UAE pages give no OSR timing, so ask your centre rather than assume the full-test timing.

Points to confirm with your centre

Check acceptance before you book. ielts.org says organisations opt in to accept OSR and recommends checking directly with yours first. This page cannot tell you who accepts it. For general score requirements, see IELTS scores for study abroad.

One Skill Retake vs a full retake: a quick comparison

This draws on IDP's article on the two options and ielts.org's rules:

Your situationWhat the provider pages point to
Your original was a paper-based testA full retake, because OSR needs an original taken on computer (ielts.org)
Two or more skills are below what you needA full retake
More than 60 days since the original testA full retake, because the OSR window has closed
Your organisation does not accept OSRA full retake
You think one skill was marked too lowAn Enquiry on Results re-marks your original answers (it is not a retake); ask your centre about its deadline and fee
One skill is short, you are inside 60 days, and your centre and organisation allow OSROSR is worth considering

Country notes: Vietnam, Singapore, the UAE and China

Availability varies by centre and changes, so check that your centre offers OSR before booking the full test.

One Skill Retake in Vietnam

IDP Vietnam says OSR has been offered there since April 2024, for IELTS on computer at IDP centres that run it. British Council Vietnam lists OSR for IELTS and IELTS for UKVI on computer, and says registration deadlines apply. For fees, see IELTS test dates and fees in Hanoi and confirm with the provider.

One Skill Retake in Singapore

OSR is available in Singapore at centres that offer it. British Council Singapore lists OSR for IELTS and IELTS for UKVI on computer. IDP Singapore's One Skill Retake page says you are eligible after a full IELTS on computer test at an eligible centre, and its test dates page, read in October 2026, flagged sessions "One Skill Retake available".

One Skill Retake in the UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah)

IDP UAE says OSR is available in selected test locations, and its test dates page, read in October 2026, flagged many centres, including some in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, as "One Skill Retake available". British Council UAE lists OSR for IELTS and IELTS for UKVI on computer.

One Skill Retake in mainland China

Here the retake is tied to a mainland full computer test with the same provider. The British Council's Chinese IELTS site says OSR is only for its own computer test takers: register for and sit it within 60 days of the test date on your TRF (no exceptions, it says), with the same ID. A test taken outside the mainland cannot be linked, and no paper test may be booked within 7 days, or computer test within 3 days, either side of an OSR. IDP's China site sets similar rules for its own centres, so check which provider your test was with.

Asked whether OSR has the same recognition as a full IELTS test, the British Council's China FAQ answers that it does not. It says to confirm acceptance with the receiving institution before registering, and that it will not notify you if that changes.

Lessons from mainland China: Mike teaches on Google Meet, and Google services, which the booking page also relies on, are generally not reachable there without extra tools. Check that you can open Google Meet before you book; if the booking page does not load, or you are unsure, email Mike first (mkcenter007@gmail.com).

How to choose: a teacher's general view

This is general teaching advice, not guidance from IDP or the British Council, and not a promise: a retake can come out higher, the same or lower.

Gap analysis by skill

Start with the four scores on your TRF: one short skill makes OSR worth considering, two or more usually point to a full retake. Then look inside the weak skill: Writing and Speaking are each marked on four equally weighted criteria, so ask which one cost you most. The IELTS band score calculator shows how the four skills combine into the overall band.

Plateau or slip?

A slip is a result well below your practice level, with a reason you can name, such as running out of time on Writing Task 2. A plateau is the same result after weeks of steady practice. A retake tends to suit a slip you understand; after a plateau, changing how you practise usually matters more.

Time before the deadline

Count back from the date you need the result: the 60-day OSR window, registration deadlines, the results wait and your preparation time. How long raising a band score can take gives rough, caveated benchmarks.

Coaching with Mike and booking

Mike is a CELTA-certified teacher (Cambridge CELTA, July 2017) in Hanoi with more than twelve years teaching English and IELTS in Vietnam, Turkey and Iran and more than 500 one-to-one sessions. His own IELTS result is 7.5 overall with 8.5 in Speaking; see about Mike. Sessions are one-to-one over Google Meet and can focus on the skill you need: Speaking, Writing, Listening, Reading, or all four. No band is promised.

The booking page shows prices in your own currency before you pay, because regional pricing applies, and a 30-minute trial session is available. Payment options are shown there too, and the calendar shows times in your own timezone.

Common questions

Can you retake IELTS?

Yes. According to ielts.org you can book the full test again whenever you feel ready. If your original test was IELTS on computer at a centre that offers One Skill Retake and you are inside 60 days, you may instead be able to retake just one skill. Check your provider's booking page for the terms that apply to you.

How many times can you retake IELTS, and how long do you have to wait?

For the full test, the ielts.org and British Council pages we read set no attempt limit and no minimum wait, and the British Council's Vietnam, Singapore and UAE results pages say retaking is not restricted. In practice, timing depends on open test dates and on how long you need to prepare. One Skill Retake is stricter: one skill, once for each full test, sat within 60 days.

What is IELTS One Skill Retake?

It lets you retake one of Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking instead of the whole test. Your full test must have been IELTS on computer at a centre that offers it, and you can use it once for each full test. You then receive a new Test Report Form with the new score for that skill and your other three original scores, and you choose whether to use the original or the new form.

Is IELTS One Skill Retake available in Singapore?

Yes, at centres that offer it. The British Council Singapore page lists it for IELTS on computer and IELTS for UKVI on computer, and IDP Singapore's page explains eligibility and booking at eligible IDP centres. You need a full computer test taken at a centre that offers it, with the retake inside 60 days, so check the centre before you book the full test.

Is IELTS One Skill Retake available in the UAE?

Yes, at selected centres. IDP UAE says it is available in selected test locations, and when we read its test dates page in October 2026 many centres, including some in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, were flagged "One Skill Retake available". British Council UAE also lists it for IELTS on computer and IELTS for UKVI on computer. Confirm with the centre you plan to use.

Should I retake one skill or the whole test?

IDP's article on the two options says a full retake may be the better choice if you need to improve more than one skill, are past 60 days, or your organisation does not accept One Skill Retake. As general teaching advice, look at all four scores first, and ask whether the weak result was a slip or a plateau. No retake can be promised to change a score.
