Online IELTS lessons for Abu Dhabi: how they work
Every lesson is taught by Mike himself, one-to-one and live on Google Meet in English. He holds the Cambridge CELTA, a teaching qualification, teaches from Hanoi, and in his own IELTS scored 7.5 overall and 8.5 in Speaking. There is no classroom, centre or group class in Abu Dhabi. About Mike has more detail.
This page covers what is specific to Abu Dhabi: the test centres, the formats and the time gap. The page for Dubai and the UAE explains how booking works and applies here too. The booking page shows your own regional price in your own currency, with the payment options, before you pay; a paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on your first booking.
A session can cover Listening, Reading, Writing (Task 1 and Task 2, marked against the public band descriptors) or Speaking (Parts 1, 2 and 3 in the real test format), with feedback during the session rather than days later; see IELTS Speaking coaching and IELTS Writing feedback. No band is promised here: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions. Still comparing tutors? See how to choose an online IELTS tutor.
The time difference: Hanoi is 3 hours ahead of Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi runs on the same UAE-wide clock as Dubai. The UAE Government portal says the UAE is 4 hours ahead of GMT (UTC+4), and the IANA time zone database (release 2026e) lists Vietnam, Hanoi included, at UTC+7, and neither zone has daylight-saving rules. The gap is therefore 3 hours all year: 20:00 in Hanoi is 17:00 in Abu Dhabi.
The booking calendar shows each open slot in your own time zone; which hours are open depends on Mike's calendar. The Dubai and UAE page has a longer conversion table.
IELTS test centres in Abu Dhabi: what ielts.org, IDP and the British Council show
Band Booster IELTS is a tutoring service, not a test centre: it does not register you for the test, set the exam fee or issue results, and it is independent of IDP, the British Council and Cambridge University Press & Assessment (Mike's Cambridge link is the CELTA teaching qualification). You book the test with IDP or the British Council. The details below were read on their UAE pages and ielts.org in October 2026; lists change, so confirm before you book.
The ielts.org test centre finder
The ielts.org test centre finder, with Country set to United Arab Emirates and City set to Abu Dhabi, showed 19 listings when read in October 2026: venues under IDP's and the British Council's names, and one other organisation's, with labels such as Computer, Computer (Writing on Paper), One Skill Retake or UKVI Approved.
IDP test centres in Abu Dhabi
The test centre finder on IDP UAE's test dates page has a city filter offering Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai and Sharjah. IDP UAE's centre list includes several test centres with an Abu Dhabi city address; this page copies none because the list changes. IDP's Abu Dhabi test dates page lets you filter sessions by test type and delivery format, and shows the venue on each session.
Abu Dhabi is both a city and an emirate: IDP lists Al Ain as its own city, and addresses there can carry Abu Dhabi as the emirate, so check the city and address on a session before you plan the journey.
The British Council: what its pages say about Abu Dhabi
The British Council's UAE IELTS page says it offers tests in locations across the UAE, and its dates and locations page names no city, so its own pages are less specific than the ielts.org finder, which lists British Council venues in Abu Dhabi. Its page on IELTS for UKVI says that in the UAE it offers IELTS for UKVI in Dubai and Abu Dhabi; that sentence is about IELTS for UKVI only.
IELTS on computer, Writing on Paper and One Skill Retake at Abu Dhabi centres
IDP's Abu Dhabi page filters sessions by delivery format: IELTS on Computer, Writing on Computer or Writing on Paper. The Abu Dhabi sessions read there in October 2026 were labelled IELTS on computer, with Writing on computer for most and Writing on paper for some. IDP's centre list states no format per venue, so this does not show that every Abu Dhabi venue offers computer delivery. The ielts.org finder does label its Abu Dhabi listings, most with Computer and a few with Computer (Writing on Paper), but confirm the format on the session you book.
Writing on Paper is a variant of the computer test, not the fully paper-based test. ielts.org's 5 March 2026 notice announced that from mid-2026 it would no longer offer paper-based IELTS, with timelines varying by market, and introduced Writing on Paper in selected markets. Some UAE provider pages still mention paper, so this page cannot say whether the fully paper-based test is open in Abu Dhabi on your date.
Speaking stays a live interview with an examiner, but the sources differ on how it is held. As read on 22 October 2026, IDP's UAE pages describe it as face to face, the British Council's page on taking IELTS on computer says it is live with an examiner while its Academic and General Training pages say some of its test centres deliver Speaking by video call, and ielts.org's Guide for Test Takers says face to face or via video call. Ask your provider how yours is held. The guide to computer-delivered IELTS in the UAE covers results timing and IELTS Online; the Speaking tutor page for the UAE covers Speaking lessons.
One Skill Retake: check the venue
One Skill Retake lets you retake one of Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking instead of all four. IDP UAE's FAQ says it is generally supported for IELTS on computer in the UAE but depends on the venue and your test date, and on IDP UAE's centre list some Abu Dhabi centres carry a One Skill Retake label and others do not. IDP UAE's retake page sets the conditions, including booking within 60 days of your original test date; acceptance of a retake result is for your university or employer to decide. Our guide to One Skill Retake or a full retake compares the two options.
Five things to confirm before you book
- the city and address of the session: Abu Dhabi city, or elsewhere such as Al Ain;
- the test type the body asking for your result requires: Academic, General Training or a UKVI version;
- the delivery format shown on the session;
- whether the centre carries a One Skill Retake label, and what the provider says about your date;
- if you book with the British Council, which of its venues the session is at, since the ielts.org finder lists more than one in Abu Dhabi.
IELTS fees and dates for Abu Dhabi: where to check
The exam fee and the test dates are set by the provider you book with, not by Band Booster, and they change, so this page prints none. IDP's Abu Dhabi test dates page shows fees and dates for its sessions; the British Council's UAE dates and locations page shows fees, and for test dates you should check with the British Council when you book.
Which IELTS test and score do you need?
That depends on who asks for the result. ielts.org's test types page describes Academic as likely right for study in an English-speaking country; our guide compares Academic and General Training. UKVI tests are listed separately: IDP's Abu Dhabi page includes UKVI sessions, and ielts.org says tests for UK Visas and Immigration must be taken at an official test centre, so ask the body requesting your result which test it needs.
Score requirements vary by programme, and ielts.org has a who accepts IELTS search for place-specific ones. As one example read in October 2026, the Department of Health Abu Dhabi's Medical Residency Program page lists IELTS 6 or higher, TOEFL 79 or higher and OET C or higher under English language proficiency for international graduates. That applies to that programme only, not to the UAE as a whole; read the requirement of the body that sets yours, and see IELTS scores for study abroad.
What to practise before test day
Speaking is a live conversation, so practise it aloud with another person; lessons run Parts 1, 2 and 3 in the real format, and the Speaking Part 2 timer helps between lessons. Writing is 60 minutes with two tasks, so practise finishing both in one sitting. As general teaching advice, not provider guidance: type your practice answers for Writing on computer, and write them by hand for Writing on Paper. The band score calculator shows how four skill scores average into an overall band.
The providers' own practice material, including computer familiarisation tests, is listed in the computer-delivered IELTS guide. Use it to learn the format, then use a lesson for a teacher's feedback on your own Writing and spoken answers.
