One-to-one online coaching, not an IELTS class in Kuala Lumpur
This is private online coaching rather than a classroom course: Mike, who holds the Cambridge CELTA and is based in Hanoi, teaches you alone, live in English on Google Meet. Band Booster has no centre, classroom or group class in Kuala Lumpur.
Mike teaches every session himself. In his own IELTS he scored 7.5 overall and 8.5 in Speaking (about Mike). Results that students have reported back, each anonymous, include 6.0 to 7.5 overall, 5.5 to 7.0 in Writing and 6.5 to 8.0 in Speaking. These are individual outcomes, not averages or typical results, and no band is promised: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions.
A session can cover Listening, Reading, Writing (Task 1 and Task 2) or Speaking (Parts 1, 2 and 3), with Writing marked against the public band descriptors and feedback during the session. See IELTS Speaking coaching, the Speaking tutor page for Malaysia and IELTS Writing feedback.

IELTS test venues listed in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor towns
Band Booster is a private tutor, not a test centre or the exam board, so you book the test with a provider. IDP and the British Council list venues in Kuala Lumpur on their Malaysian sites (read in October 2026); the lists differ and change, so check the current ones before you book.
| Listing | IDP Malaysia | British Council Malaysia |
|---|---|---|
| Listed in Kuala Lumpur | IDP Kuala Lumpur, on Jalan Ampang, and IDP Kepong, whose address ends 52100 Kuala Lumpur | Three locations: British Council Kuala Lumpur on Jalan Ampang, one at The Boulevard Office in Mid Valley City and one at Plaza Mont Kiara |
| Listed in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan | Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Shah Alam, Klang and Rawang (Selangor); Nilai (Negeri Sembilan) | Petaling Jaya, Bandar Sunway, Subang Jaya, Shah Alam and Bangi (Selangor) |
| Format label | Every venue on its list is labelled "IELTS on Computer" | Its booking page lists IELTS Academic, General Training, and IELTS for UKVI Academic and General Training as "in centre (on computer)", and its paper-versus-computer page names Kuala Lumpur among the places where IELTS on computer is available |
| Where to look | Test dates and centres | Dates, fees and locations |
- Same building name. Both providers' Kuala Lumpur listings name Wisma Golden Eagle Realty on Jalan Ampang. They are separate listings, and this page has not compared floors or entrances.
- Distances. Neither provider says how far the Selangor and Negeri Sembilan towns are from Kuala Lumpur, so this page makes no distance claim; check travel time on your own map.
- Booking with the British Council. British Council Malaysia says you can book online or at its offices in Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
Computer or paper, and how Speaking is held: confirm when you book
The venue labels above point to computer delivery, but the sources do not fully agree on whether paper is still offered in Malaysia. IDP's venue list still has an introduction that mentions paper-based tests, while British Council Malaysia's IELTS on Computer page says that from 1 March (it gives no year) the IELTS Test Partners no longer offer the paper format there. Confirm the format when you book; the computer-delivered IELTS in Malaysia page sets out where the sources differ.
On computer, Speaking stays an interview with an examiner, but the wording differs, even within each provider's own pages: IDP's computer-delivered page describes Speaking as a face-to-face interview with an examiner, taken in a private room, while IDP's FAQ page says Speaking is conducted through Video Call Speaking at the test centre. British Council Malaysia's Academic page says its test centres deliver Speaking by video call, with the examiner in another location, its IELTS on Computer page (linked above) calls it a face-to-face video call, and its paper-versus-computer page says face to face. On timing, IDP's computer-delivered page says Speaking is taken on the same day, either before or after the other three parts, and a general FAQ line on that page says that in some test centres it is on the same day or up to 7 days before or after the test date, while British Council Malaysia says the same day or within a 7-day window before or after the main test date. None of these pages settles how your own Speaking will be held, so ask the provider.
ielts.org's ways to take IELTS page says IELTS Online is offered in some countries, for IELTS Academic only, and Writing on Paper in selected countries. IDP Malaysia's pages are not consistent about IELTS Online for Malaysia: an IDP Malaysia article on choosing between the computer and online formats, dated 2024, lists IELTS Online as one of the two formats available in Malaysia, alongside the test on computer, and says it is for Academic only, with Speaking by video call with an accredited examiner, while IDP's IELTS Online page says only that it has been introduced in "select countries" and does not name Malaysia in its body text. The British Council Malaysia pages read for this page do not describe an at-home IELTS Online test. Confirm availability with IDP, check with the organisation receiving your score that it accepts online results (ielts.org says receiving organisations can decide), and ask your provider whether Writing on Paper applies to you.
One Skill Retake: check the venue before you book
Availability depends on the venue. IDP's Malaysian venue list tags IDP Kuala Lumpur, IDP Kepong, IDP Subang Jaya and IDP Nilai "One Skill Retake available", and does not tag Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Klang or Rawang, although IDP's Shah Alam centre page shows sessions marked "One Skill Retake available", so its list is not a complete guide. British Council Malaysia's One Skill Retake page says it exists for IELTS on computer, that it is available at selected IELTS on Computer centres, and that your results must come from a test centre that offers it, but it does not list venues. IDP Malaysia and ielts.org say to check availability with your test centre.
The rules, including the 60-day limit, are on ielts.org's One Skill Retake page; to compare it with a full retake, read One Skill Retake or full retake.
Academic, General Training or UKVI: the organisation receiving your result decides
ielts.org's test types page advises checking entry requirements before choosing a test, and IDP Malaysia says to confirm the score with the organisation, since each sets its own. This page states no target score. See Academic vs General Training and IELTS scores for study abroad.
Test fees and dates: ask the providers
The test fee is charged by the provider you book with, not by Band Booster, and fees and dates change, so this page quotes none. British Council Malaysia's dates, fees and locations page shows upcoming dates and fees by location. IDP Malaysia's test dates page lists its centres, and its test fee page sets out its fees. Lesson prices appear on the booking page, in your own currency, before you pay.
How to book lessons from Kuala Lumpur
The booking steps are set out on the Malaysia page: pick a slot on the booking page, see your price in your own currency before you pay, and use a payment option shown there. Malaysia is in the middle regional price tier, above the Vietnam price and below the highest tier.
A paid 30-minute trial can be taken once per student, on a first booking. You can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before a slot; a cancellation inside 12 hours is not refunded. There is no subscription or package.
Kuala Lumpur is one hour ahead of Hanoi
The IANA time zone database points peninsular Malaysia to its Asia/Singapore zone (its backward file links Asia/Kuala_Lumpur to it), which is UTC+8 with no daylight-saving rules; the National Metrology Institute of Malaysia also describes Malaysian Standard Time as UTC plus eight hours. The database puts Vietnam, Hanoi included, at UTC+7, also with no daylight saving. The gap does not change during the year, because neither place currently uses daylight saving: 20:00 in Kuala Lumpur is 19:00 in Hanoi.
The booking calendar shows each slot in your own time zone. Mike's calendar decides which slots are open and no particular hours are promised, so check it first if you can study only at fixed times.
Practice materials, and how lessons fit with them
The preparation resources page on ielts.org lists sample questions and answers, videos explaining how Writing is scored, courses, apps, webinars, books and articles. IDP Malaysia's prepare page lists practice tests, including computer Familiarisation tests for Listening, Reading and Writing and a Speaking Part 1 practice test, plus podcasts, videos and articles. The computer-delivered IELTS in Malaysia page covers which versions each provider's Familiarisation test offers.
The advice below is general teaching advice, not guidance from IDP, the British Council or ielts.org, and it promises no band:
- Learn the format first. Use the sample and Familiarisation tests to get used to the question types and the screen, then practise sections against a timer.
- Bring your Writing. Write a Task 1 or Task 2 answer in the time allowed, then have it marked against the public band descriptors in a lesson.
- Speak aloud. Speaking is a recorded interview in three parts, according to ielts.org's Speaking format page, so practise it with a person where you can. The Speaking Part 2 timer helps with a long turn.
- Know your target. The IELTS band score calculator shows how four skill scores average into an overall band.
