Is IELTS in Hong Kong on computer now?
According to British Council Hong Kong, yes. Its paper and computer page says the British Council and IDP no longer offer IELTS on paper in Hong Kong from the start of July 2026, and that you can still take IELTS on computer. Other pages on its site give the day slightly differently (one says late June), so this page says around the end of June or the start of July and names no exact day. ielts.org says that from mid-2026 IELTS is no longer offered as a paper-based test, with timelines varying by market, and that paper results already issued stay valid until the end of the recommended two-year period.
One point is not fully settled. Some IDP Hong Kong pages still carry paper wording: its test-centre finder, for example, says you can choose between computer-delivered and paper-based formats, and its paper-based page still says you can take Academic and General Training on paper. The IDP pages read for this page say nothing about paper ending for those two tests. British Council Hong Kong's booking page and venue list also still mention paper in places. This page cannot confirm that paper is available anywhere in Hong Kong, so expect IELTS on computer and check the format on the session you book.
This page covers IELTS Academic and General Training (see Academic or General Training); check IELTS for UKVI with the provider.
Where IELTS on computer is taken in Hong Kong
IDP and the British Council each have their own Hong Kong booking page and venue list.
- IDP. Its Hong Kong test-centre finder lists two centres, Lai Chi Kok and Kwun Tong, both in Kowloon. IDP's computer page says its centres are on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon but lists only those two. As read on 22 October 2026, ielts.org's test-centre finder for Hong Kong also lists an ATA Hong Kong venue in Wan Chai, on the island, that IDP's own pages do not list, so ask IDP which venue your session uses.
- British Council. Its dates, fees and locations page lists IELTS on Computer venues in Admiralty (Hong Kong Island), the Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei and Jordan area and Kwun Tong, and a notice on the page mentions a new Tsim Sha Tsui venue. Other venues on the list carry an "IELTS on Paper" label, and this page cannot tell which of them still apply, so treat the list as a guide to areas only.
Choose the venue on the provider's booking page. Fees and test dates are set by the providers and change, so this page quotes none.
IELTS on computer vs on paper: what changes on the day, section by section
British Council Hong Kong says IELTS on paper and on computer have the same format, questions and scoring, and IDP Hong Kong says the content is the same. ielts.org adds that the move to computer does not change the skills assessed or the way institutions should interpret results.
| Section | Time and parts | On computer in Hong Kong |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 30 minutes, 4 parts, 40 questions | Questions on screen; you enter your answers on the computer. |
| Reading | 60 minutes, 3 sections, 40 questions | Questions on screen; answers entered on the computer. |
| Writing | 60 minutes, 2 tasks | Questions on screen and answers typed. Handwriting applies only to the Writing on Paper option (below). |
| Speaking | 11 to 14 minutes, 3 parts | A live interview with an examiner rather than on-screen questions. The providers' pages differ on whether it is in person or by video call (see below). |
Writing on Paper, an option on the computer test
According to ielts.org, you write your Writing responses by hand while the questions and the other sections stay on the computer; task types, scoring and time are unchanged. It is not available for IELTS for UKVI, and your Test Report Form will not say you chose it. British Council Hong Kong lists the option, and ielts.org's Hong Kong test-centre finder, as read on 22 October 2026, tags a British Council Admiralty card and two ATA Hong Kong venues (Lai Chi Kok and Wan Chai) with Computer (Writing on Paper). The IDP Hong Kong pages read for this page do not mention it, so ask IDP before assuming it is offered.
Is the IELTS Speaking test on the computer?
Not in the way the other sections are: Speaking is a live conversation with an examiner, not questions answered on screen. The providers' pages and ielts.org do not describe how it is delivered in the same way. ielts.org's Speaking format pages say face to face and do not mention video, while its Guide for Test Takers says face to face or via video call. IDP Hong Kong's computer page describes a face-to-face conversation with an "in-person IELTS examiner", worded as online or offline, and does not say which sessions use a video link. British Council Hong Kong says some of its test centres deliver Speaking by video call on some dates, that candidates at its Admiralty centre can choose in-person or video-call formats for different test dates, and that the Speaking time, date and format can change. As read on 22 October 2026 these pages are not consistent with each other, so confirm the format with your provider.
It takes 11 to 14 minutes in three parts: introduction and familiar topics (Part 1), a one-to-two-minute talk on a cue card after one minute to prepare (Part 2), and a discussion of more abstract questions (Part 3).
When do computer-delivered IELTS results arrive?
British Council Hong Kong and IDP Hong Kong both give about 1 to 5 days after the test in their main text, while ielts.org's Fast IELTS results page says usually 1 to 2 days. Treat these as typical rather than promised. ielts.org's test-taker page also says 1 to 5 days after test completion, and British Council Hong Kong says typically 1 to 2 days elsewhere on its site. ielts.org gives Writing on Paper results within five days and IELTS Online results in 6 to 8 days.
British Council Hong Kong adds that if the release day falls on a Sunday or public holiday, the Test Report Form is sent on the next working day. If you have a deadline, check the current figure and leave some margin.
IELTS Online and One Skill Retake in Hong Kong
IELTS Online. British Council Hong Kong lists IELTS Online (Academic only), taken at home; ielts.org says receiving organisations decide whether to accept it.
One Skill Retake. ielts.org says it needs a full test taken as IELTS on computer and lets you retake one skill, once per original test, within 60 days. British Council Hong Kong says to book with it to be eligible, and IDP's finder marks both its centres as offering it, although ielts.org's test-centre finder, as read on 22 October 2026, shows the tag only on British Council cards, so confirm with IDP. See One Skill Retake or a full retake.
How to practise for the computer format
The providers publish practice tools, and they are not identical:
- IDP Hong Kong's computer page links Familiarisation Tests for Listening, Reading and Writing, with answer keys, and asks you to try them before test day.
- The British Council's familiarisation test says it looks and feels like the real interface, with Academic and General Training versions.
- ielts.org's sample test questions let you test yourself under timed conditions.
Computer-based IELTS tips: general advice from a teacher (not from IDP or the British Council)
This is general study advice, and it promises no band.
- Practise Writing against the clock, the way you will sit it. Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1, so decide beforehand how to split the 60 minutes (about 20 for Task 1 and 40 for Task 2 is the usual guide). If you will type, practise typing complete answers; if you type slowly, ask whether Writing on Paper is offered for your session.
- Practise entering Listening answers on screen, typing short answers while a recording plays.
- Find out about the on-screen tools. IDP Hong Kong says the computer test has a note-taking and highlight function and that headphones are provided, so check how the tools work on your provider's page before test day.
- Keep Speaking practice spoken. Practise aloud with another person, and time a Part 2 long turn with the Speaking Part 2 timer.
How one-to-one lessons with Mike can help
Band Booster IELTS is a private tutoring service, not a test centre: it does not register candidates, set exam fees or provide exam software. Mike is a Cambridge CELTA-certified teacher based in Hanoi who teaches every session himself, one-to-one, live on Google Meet in English only. His own IELTS result is 7.5 overall with 8.5 in Speaking (about Mike).
- Writing timing. Write a Task 1 and a Task 2 answer within 60 minutes and bring them to a session. Writing is marked against the public band descriptors, with feedback during the session. See Writing feedback.
- The three-part Speaking. Sessions follow the real format, Parts 1, 2 and 3, with feedback in the moment rather than days later. See Speaking coaching.
No band is promised: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions. For the screen interface itself, use the familiarisation tests above.
The booking page shows each time in your own time zone and your price in your own currency before you pay. Hong Kong is one hour ahead of Hanoi all year, with no daylight saving in either place (the sources are on the online IELTS tutor for Hong Kong page). A paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on your first booking.
Check before you book
Confirm with your provider which format is on the session, whether Speaking is in person or by video call on your date, and the current results timing. Also ask the university, employer or immigration body requesting IELTS whether it accepts your format: each organisation decides what it accepts.
Register for the test with British Council Hong Kong or IDP Hong Kong, not with Band Booster.
