English-only lessons, online only
Lessons are online only and in English only, with no in-person sessions or group classes in Hong Kong. For how a session works, see the online IELTS tutor page (its prices are for Vietnam); to compare a private tutor with a group course, see private tutor versus group course (written for Hanoi); for Mike, see about Mike.
Hong Kong is one hour ahead of Hanoi
The Hong Kong Observatory lists no summer time in Hong Kong from 1980 to now, and the IANA time zone database has no daylight saving entry for Vietnam, which includes Hanoi. The same database puts Hong Kong at UTC+8 and Vietnam at UTC+7, so the gap stays at one hour all year: 19:00 in Hanoi is 20:00 in Hong Kong. Open slots on the booking page appear in your own timezone, and no particular hours are promised, so look before you plan around a test date.
IELTS in Hong Kong: what the providers say
Band Booster does not register students, set fees or choose test dates. What follows is taken from the providers' Hong Kong pages and from ielts.org as read in October 2026, so check it again before booking.
Who runs the test
Both the British Council and IDP run IELTS in Hong Kong; fees, dates and test locations are on their own sites:
- British Council Hong Kong: IELTS dates, fees and locations, and its IELTS pages.
- IDP IELTS Hong Kong in English, and its test centres and dates page, which is in Chinese.
- The ielts.org test centre finder for Hong Kong.
On computer, with Speaking live with an examiner
British Council Hong Kong's paper and computer page says that from 1 July 2026 neither it nor IDP offers IELTS on paper in Hong Kong, though an option of IELTS on computer with Writing on Paper is still listed. Its dates, fees and locations page marks that option as not available for UKVI tests. ielts.org announced on 5 March 2026 that paper-based IELTS would end from mid-2026, with timelines varying by market. Some pages on both providers' Hong Kong sites, IDP's included, still carry older paper wording, so confirm the format with your provider when you book.
On IELTS on computer, Listening, Reading and Writing are done on screen, and Speaking is live with an examiner, in person or by video call depending on the centre and date: British Council Hong Kong says some of its test centres offer both formats on different dates, and IDP Hong Kong says Speaking at its centres is face to face, online or offline. The main text of the providers' Hong Kong pages says computer results usually arrive within about 1 to 5 days, though other wording on those sites gives different figures; confirm with your provider.
British Council Hong Kong also lists IELTS Online (Academic only), taken remotely; ielts.org's ways to take IELTS page says its results take 6 to 8 days and that receiving organisations decide whether to accept it. For UK visas, British Council Hong Kong lists IELTS for UKVI on computer and says UKVI only accepts tests taken in person at an IELTS for UKVI test centre; check with IDP whether its Hong Kong centres offer it.
One Skill Retake in Hong Kong
British Council Hong Kong's One Skill Retake page says it is available for IELTS Academic and General Training on computer and IELTS for UKVI on computer. You can retake one skill once per original test, within 60 days of that test, and you must have received your results from a test centre that offers One Skill Retake. The page says booking with the British Council makes you eligible; ask your test provider how to book a retake. IDP Hong Kong's test-dates page marks the centres it lists as supporting it; confirm with IDP. ielts.org says you get a new Test Report Form and can choose which to use; check that the organisation receiving your result accepts it.
