This page reports what the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) says on one of its own pages, read in October 2026. It is not registration advice, and Band Booster IELTS is a private tutor, independent of SMC. SMC decides who must show English proficiency and which results it accepts, so confirm every line on its page before you book a test. This page quotes no exam fee and no test date.
What SMC's page says about English proficiency
The lines below come from SMC's page on documents for submission and processing time, which showed “Last updated on 2 September 2026” in the body of the page when it was read.
| Question | What SMC's page says |
|---|---|
| Who must show English proficiency | International medical graduates whose basic medical degree is from a medical school where the medium of instruction is not in English. |
| IELTS | At least 7 in each of the four components (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) for the academic module. |
| Sitting | Test results must be obtained in a single sitting. |
| How recent | Results are accepted only if they are within 2 years from the date of the test. |
| TOEFL | Only the TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) is accepted. The page gives separate minimums for tests taken before 21 January 2026 and from that date; this page does not quote them, so read them on SMC's page. |
| OET | At least Grade B in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking). |
| Clinical Observers | Doctors who apply for temporary registration as Clinical Observers for training attachment do not need to submit English test results. |
Who the English requirement is aimed at
SMC's sentence is worded around the medical school, not around nationality or first language: international medical graduates must show evidence of English proficiency if their basic medical degree was obtained from a medical school where the medium of instruction was not English. If your medical school taught in a language other than English, you are in the case that sentence describes. If it taught in English, the sentence does not describe you on its face, but whether SMC asks for anything else in your case is a question for SMC, not for this page.
The IELTS line, read carefully
- Academic module. SMC's IELTS line names the academic module. IELTS Academic and General Training are different tests: in Writing Task 1, Academic asks you to describe a chart, graph, table, diagram or process, while General Training asks for a letter. The lines read for this page do not say how SMC treats General Training, so ask SMC before you book any other module. See IELTS Academic or General Training.
- At least 7 in each component. The rule is written for each of the four skills, not for the overall band. An overall band of 7 or higher does not by itself meet it, because a strong Listening score cannot make up for a lower Writing score. Bands run in half-band steps from 0 to 9, so “at least 7” means 7.0 or higher. The IELTS band score calculator shows how four skill scores average into an overall band; SMC's line looks at the four scores themselves.
- One sitting. SMC's page says test results must be obtained in a single sitting, so the four IELTS scores should come from one test sitting. Scores gathered across different test dates are not what the line describes. The lines read here do not say whether a One Skill Retake result would count alongside an earlier sitting, so ask SMC before you rely on one; One Skill Retake or a full retake explains how that option works.
- A two-year window. Results are accepted only if they are within 2 years from the date of the test. The line does not say on which date the two years are counted to, such as the day you submit, so if your result is close to the limit, ask SMC.
Four skills, one minimum
Because SMC's figure applies to every skill, the shape of each component matters, and the four are not alike. Listening has 40 questions in 30 minutes over 4 parts, and the recording is played once. Reading has 40 questions in 60 minutes over 3 sections. Writing is one 60-minute paper with two tasks, and Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1 in the Writing band. Speaking is a live interview of 11 to 14 minutes in three parts, ending with a discussion of abstract questions.
With a minimum on every skill, the lowest of your four scores is the one that decides whether the line is met, so it can make sense to plan practice around your weakest skill rather than your favourite. That is general teaching advice, not guidance from SMC or IELTS.
TOEFL iBT and OET, as SMC lists them
SMC's page lists two other tests beside IELTS. For TOEFL, only the Internet-based test (iBT) is accepted, with separate minimums for tests taken before 21 January 2026 and from that date, which are shown on SMC's page. For OET, the page asks for at least Grade B in each of the four components. This page does not compare the tests or say which one suits you: that depends on you and on SMC's current page. Band Booster's lessons are IELTS and General English lessons, so this page gives no OET or TOEFL preparation advice.
Two other lines on the same SMC page
Clinical Observers on temporary registration
SMC's page says doctors who apply for temporary registration as Clinical Observers for training attachment do not need to submit English test results. The same page says such doctors are not allowed to be involved in the primary management of patients or to prescribe treatment. This page does not describe how that registration works or who can apply for it; that is for SMC.
A job or training offer
In its list of conditions for medical registration, SMC's page includes that the applicant must have a job offer or an offer of a training position in a healthcare institution approved by SMC. The same list has further conditions that this page does not cover.
SMC's page does not say in which order to sit the test and secure the offer, so ask SMC and the institution about the order that applies to you.
If you work in another healthcare profession
Other healthcare professions are registered by other bodies, so SMC's lines are not a rule for them. The page on IELTS for healthcare registration in Singapore sets the councils' pages side by side. If your goal is a degree rather than registration, see IELTS scores for study abroad.
Registering for the IELTS test is a separate step
Band Booster IELTS does not register anyone for IELTS, set exam fees or test dates, or send results to SMC. Registration belongs to the test providers, and how SMC receives results is a question for SMC. For how IELTS is delivered in Singapore and where to start, read computer-delivered IELTS in Singapore.
How lessons with Mike can follow a per-skill target
Mike teaches every session himself, one-to-one and live over Google Meet from Hanoi. His background is a Cambridge CELTA (July 2017), 12+ years of teaching English and IELTS in Vietnam, Turkey and Iran, and 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS; About Mike has the detail. The lessons are English and IELTS lessons, not medical or clinical training.
A session can cover Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking, alone or mixed, so lessons can lean towards the skill that sits furthest from 7. Tell Mike which skill that is at the start. Writing Task 1 and Task 2 are marked against the public band descriptors, and Speaking is practised in the real three-part format, with feedback during the session rather than days later. Related pages: IELTS Writing feedback, IELTS Speaking coaching, Listening and Reading; those pages are written for Vietnam, so ignore their prices. Between lessons, the Speaking Part 2 timer helps you practise timing a long turn.
A lesson is practice, not the test. Sessions can be recorded on request, and written progress notes appear in your account after each session. No band is promised: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions.
Booking lessons from Singapore
The booking page shows each time in your own time zone and your price in your own currency before you pay; Singapore sits in the higher regional price tier, above the Vietnam price. Your first booking can be a paid 30-minute trial, which can be taken once, and there is no subscription and no package to commit to. Payment is by PayPal (cards can be used through PayPal guest checkout) or USDT on TRC20 or BEP20. After payment, a Google Meet link and calendar invite arrive by email. You can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before the slot; a cancellation inside 12 hours is not refunded. The online IELTS tutor page for Singapore explains how lessons work from there.
