IELTS for UKVI in Bahrain: Where It Is Listed and What the Score Levels Mean

Last updated:

The British Council in Bahrain says UKVI accepts only tests taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI centre; the UK government's October 2026 list shows three IELTS SELT Consortium centres for Bahrain, and ielts.org's finder marks two listings UKVI Approved. Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutor, not a test centre: Mike (CELTA, 8.5 in Speaking) teaches one-to-one from Hanoi and registers no one.

Price: BHD 21.72 for a 60-minute one-to-one lesson; BHD 5.07 for the paid 30-minute trial. Amounts use the same price tiers as the booking page, in your local currency at exchange rates set on 6 October 2026. The booking page shows the exact amount before you pay, and PayPal charges the US-dollar equivalent (USD 57.76 for a 60-minute lesson).

The British Council in Bahrain says UKVI accepts only tests taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre, and the sources read in October 2026 do not list the same centres: the British Council names Manama, the UK government's list shows three IELTS SELT Consortium centres, and ielts.org's finder marks two listings UKVI Approved. Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutor, not a test centre: Mike, a CELTA-certified teacher based in Hanoi who scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS, coaches one-to-one on Google Meet, the booking page shows your price in your own currency before you pay, and no band is guaranteed.

What the rule says: in person, at an approved centre

The British Council's Bahrain page on IELTS for UKVI says UKVI will only accept tests taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre, because UKVI requires an additional layer of security when taking language tests. UKVI stands for UK Visas and Immigration.

GOV.UK's guidance on proving your English language abilities with a secure English language test (SELT) makes two further points about the result itself: the test must have been sat at an approved test location, and the result must have been awarded in the two years before the date of your application.

Whether you need an IELTS for UKVI test at all, and which score level your route asks for, is for the guidance on your own visa route and the body asking for your result to say. This page gives no visa or immigration advice; start from GOV.UK.

Everything below was read in October 2026 on the British Council's Bahrain pages, in the UK government's list of approved test centres and on ielts.org's Bahrain finder. Lists and requirements change, so confirm on the official page before you book. This page quotes no exam fee or test date.

Where IELTS for UKVI is listed for Bahrain

Three sources were read, and they do not give the same picture. The table sets them side by side, with venue names as each source gives them.

The UK government list

The file's name says the list is from October 2026. Three of its Bahrain rows have IELTS SELT Consortium in the Provider column; the list also holds Bahrain rows for other test providers, which this page does not cover. Each of the three gives Manama in the City column and Available in the Availability column. Names are as the list gives them, and so are addresses, except that IDP Bahrain's is shortened:

Name on the listAddress on the list
BC BahrainBritish Council Bahrain, 146 Shaikh Salman Highway, PO Box 356, Manama, Bahrain
IDP BahrainPlatform Plaza, Bu Quwah, Bahrain (the list adds an office, level, building, road and block number)
Bahrain Institute of Banking and FinanceBuilding 1306, 346 Rd 4625, Manama, Bahrain

This page does not read the Availability column as a statement about test dates or places, and it names no centre as the one to choose. Because the file name says the list is from October 2026, check that you are reading the current edition.

What the ielts.org finder shows

ielts.org's Bahrain finder, read in October 2026, shows two British Council Bahrain cards at 146 Shaikh Salman Highway, Manama; one carries the UKVI Approved label and the other does not. It also marks IDP IELTS Bahrain Bu Quwah as UKVI Approved. The Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance, which the government list shows, was missing from the finder's Bahrain venues, and two listings named British Council, University of Technology Bahrain carry no UKVI Approved label.

What to make of the differences

Score levels: from CEFR levels to IELTS for UKVI scores

The British Council's table

The British Council's Bahrain page states visa requirements as CEFR levels, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and gives an IELTS for UKVI score for each. It names the four components as Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

CEFR level on the pageIELTS for UKVI score the page gives
B1, for visas that require B1 in four skillsAt least 4.0 in all four components
B2At least 5.5 in all four components
C1At least 7.0 in all four components

The same page lists Life Skills tests for A1, A2 and B1 in two skills, where the result is a Pass rather than a band score; this page does not cover them.

Two different things sit in that table. The level is what a visa rule may name; the score is what the British Council's page says you need on IELTS for UKVI for that level, and it adds that the UK government requires those scores in every component. The page adds that the level depends on the visa you apply for, that its information is collated from the government website and was correct at the time of publication, and that you should confirm your requirements with the government website or your receiving organisation. Which route asks for which level belongs to the UK government, and this page does not state it.

A visa minimum is also separate from a university's admission requirement. Both vary by country, institution and course, and both change over time. See IELTS scores for study abroad and, for institutions in Bahrain, IELTS scores asked by Bahrain universities.

Reading “in all four components”

When the page says at least 7.0 in all four components, it asks for that score in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The overall band is the average of the four skill scores, rounded to the nearest half band, so an overall band alone does not show whether you meet a rule written this way.

To illustrate the arithmetic only, not anyone's result: four skill scores that average 6.875 are rounded up to an overall 7.0, yet one of those four scores can still be 6.5, which is below a 7.0 asked for in every component. Band scores run from 0 to 9 in half-band steps, and the IELTS band score calculator shows the rounding.

The Life Skills test and video calls

The same British Council page says some of its IELTS for UKVI test centres are delivering the IELTS for UKVI Life Skills test via video calls. The sentence does not say which centres, or whether the Bahrain centre is one of them, so ask the centre how a Life Skills session would be held. This page makes no claim that a Life Skills test is offered in Bahrain.

Before you book: a short checklist

This is general advice, not guidance from the British Council, IDP, ielts.org or the UK government.

  1. Get the requirement from the body asking for your result. Ask for the exact test name and the score level in writing, or find them on its own page. This page cannot say which route needs which test.
  2. Choose a session whose name says UKVI. Confirm with the provider that the booking is for IELTS for UKVI. For how Academic and General Training differ in general, see Academic or General Training.
  3. Check the venue against the government list and ielts.org's finder. If the venue on your booking appears on only one of them, ask the provider about it before you pay.
  4. Work out the dates. GOV.UK says the result must have been awarded in the two years before the date of your application, so compare your own application timeline with the date a result would be awarded.
  5. Plan to sit it in person. The British Council says UKVI accepts nothing else.
  6. Check fees, dates, ID and cancellation rules with the provider. The providers set and change them, so this page quotes no exam fee or test date. For how booking, ID and test day work in Bahrain, see booking IELTS in Bahrain and what happens on test day.

Where one-to-one lessons with Mike fit

Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutoring service. It is not a test centre, it is independent of IDP, the British Council and the UK government, and it does not register you, hold a place, set test fees or dates, or issue results. A lesson is practice with a teacher, not an IELTS test, and it does not replace an IELTS for UKVI test taken in person.

Every lesson is one-to-one, live on Google Meet, in English, with Mike, who holds the Cambridge CELTA, teaches from Hanoi and scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS (about Mike). Writing Task 1 and Task 2 are marked against the public band descriptors, and Speaking runs Parts 1, 2 and 3 in the real test format, with feedback during the session. See IELTS Writing feedback, IELTS Speaking coaching and IELTS Speaking tutor for Bahrain and its neighbours; the first two pages are written for Vietnam and show Vietnam prices, and your own price is on the booking page.

Bahrain is in a higher regional price tier than Vietnam, and the booking page shows your price in your own currency, with the payment options, before you pay. A paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on your first booking, and you can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before a session. There is no subscription and no package. No band is guaranteed: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions.

Common questions

Where can I take IELTS for UKVI in Bahrain?

The sources read in October 2026 do not list the same centres. The British Council says it offers IELTS for UKVI in Manama; the UK government's list of approved test centres outside the UK shows three IELTS SELT Consortium centres, BC Bahrain, IDP Bahrain and Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance, all with Manama as the city; and ielts.org's finder marks IDP IELTS Bahrain Bu Quwah and one British Council Bahrain listing as UKVI Approved. Lists change, so confirm the venue on your booking.

Does IELTS for UKVI have to be taken in person?

The British Council's Bahrain page says UKVI will only accept tests taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre, because UKVI requires an additional layer of security when taking language tests. GOV.UK's guidance says the test must have been sat at an approved test location. Whether your route needs this test at all is for the body asking for your result to say.

What score do I need on IELTS for UKVI?

That depends on the level your visa route requires, and this page cannot say what your route needs. The British Council's Bahrain page gives at least 4.0 in all four components for CEFR B1 in four skills, at least 5.5 for B2 and at least 7.0 for C1, and says the UK government requires those scores in every component. It adds that its information is collated from the government website and was correct at the time of publication, so confirm the level and score for your route with GOV.UK or the body asking for your result.

How recent must my IELTS for UKVI result be?

GOV.UK's guidance says the result must have been awarded in the two years before the date of your application. This page cannot say how that applies to your own application, so check the guidance for your route. The two years are counted back from the date of your application.

Why does the government list show a centre that ielts.org's finder does not?

The UK government list shows the Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance, Building 1306, 346 Rd 4625, Manama, as an IELTS SELT Consortium centre, and it was missing from ielts.org's Bahrain finder when read in October 2026. We cannot say why, or which list is more current. If that venue is the one on your booking, ask the provider whose page offers it to confirm that the session is IELTS for UKVI.

Is a university's IELTS requirement the same as the visa score?

No. A visa minimum and a university or programme's admission requirement are separate requirements, both vary by country, institution and course, and both change over time. Check each on the official page of the body that sets it, and do not rely on one fixed number. Our page on IELTS scores for study abroad keeps the two apart.

Does Band Booster register me for IELTS for UKVI or run the test?

No. Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutoring service, not a test centre, so it does not register you, hold a place, set fees or dates, or issue results. Lessons with Mike are separate: one-to-one on Google Meet, with your price shown in your own currency on the booking page before you pay. A lesson is practice, not an IELTS for UKVI test, and no band is guaranteed.
