IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills in Kuwait: Which Tests, Which Venues and Who Sets the Level

Last updated:

ielts.org says UK Visas and Immigration will only accept tests taken in person at an IELTS for UKVI test centre, and ielts.com.kw (which describes itself as IDP IELTS Kuwait) says IELTS Life Skills, a pass-or-fail Speaking and Listening test, is offered at the IDP IELTS office in Salmiya. The UK government decides the level; Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutor, not a test centre, and registers no one.

Price: KWD 17.86 for a 60-minute one-to-one lesson; KWD 4.17 for the paid 30-minute trial. Amounts use the same price tiers as the booking page, in your local currency at exchange rates set on 6 October 2026. The booking page shows the exact amount before you pay, and PayPal charges the US-dollar equivalent (USD 57.76 for a 60-minute lesson).

IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills are the two UK-visa-related IELTS tests this page covers for Kuwait: ielts.org says UK Visas and Immigration will only accept tests taken in person at an IELTS for UKVI test centre, and ielts.com.kw, which describes itself as IDP IELTS Kuwait, says Life Skills is offered at the IDP IELTS office in Salmiya with more limited availability than computer-delivered IELTS. Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutor, not a test centre: Mike, a CELTA-certified teacher in Hanoi who scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS, teaches one-to-one on Google Meet, the booking page shows your price in your own currency before you pay, and no band is guaranteed.

This page explains the tests and where the Kuwait sources list them. It is not a visa guide: it cannot say whether your application needs IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Life Skills, or at which level, because the UK government's guidance for your route decides that. Start from GOV.UK's guidance on secure English language tests and the page for your own route. The sources below were read on 24 October 2026 and can change. This page quotes no exam fee or test date, because the providers set and change them.

What the sources call IELTS for UKVI

ielts.com.kw, a site that describes itself as IDP IELTS Kuwait, describes IELTS for UKVI as an IELTS test approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for visa and immigration applications. This page uses the name ielts.com.kw for that site and takes its self-description as given; it cannot confirm it, so rely on your booking confirmation to see who is running your test.

ielts.org's page on IELTS tests for UK visas and immigration adds where the test must be taken: UKVI will only accept tests taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre. “Official” is ielts.org's word, not a claim made by this site. This page reads that sentence as pointing to a test centre rather than to your home; ask your provider if you are unsure.

IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills are different tests

ielts.com.kw has a separate page for IELTS Life Skills. The table sets what that page says about Life Skills beside the standard Academic and General Training tests. This page does not describe the question types or timings of IELTS for UKVI itself; read the UKVI page of the provider you will book with.

Where the Kuwait sources place each test

IELTS Life Skills: the IDP IELTS office in Salmiya

ielts.com.kw's Life Skills page says the test is offered at the IDP IELTS office in Salmiya, and that availability is more limited than for computer-delivered IELTS. It names no other venue and does not say there are none, so this page makes no claim either way about other venues. The booking page for the test and level you need is what shows the venue and the sessions on offer. The guide to IELTS test venues in Kuwait lists the venues the providers show, by area.

General advice, not provider guidance: because availability is described as more limited, look at the booking page well before any deadline you are working to, not in the final weeks.

IELTS for UKVI: what ielts.org's finder shows

ielts.org's test centre finder for Kuwait tags several listings UKVI Approved, among them:

The tag is not on every listing of every venue, and a venue can appear in the finder twice, once with the tag and once without. When this page was written, about half of the finder's 20 Kuwait listings carried it, with some venues counted twice; that is a count of 24 October 2026 and it changes whenever the finder is updated. Treat the tag as a reason to look at a venue, not as a promise about the session you pick, and check it for the listing and session you book.

ielts.org's centre page for the venue on the 16th floor of Ahmad Tower, Arabian Gulf Street, in Kuwait City lists IELTS UKVI Academic and IELTS UKVI General Training, both on computer. This page names venues by area and address, as the finder words them; the finder shows each venue's name.

The finders do not group venues under “Kuwait City” in the same way. The Kuwait City page goes through the difference and has a short paragraph on IELTS for UKVI of its own; read it alongside this one.

Who decides which test, and which level

Different parties set different things, and it helps to keep them apart.

Life Skills levels

ielts.com.kw says UK Visas and Immigration decides which level and test you need. It tells candidates to confirm the exact requirement in the UK government's guidance before they book, and adds that requirements change. It describes A1 as typically for family-of-a-settled-person visas, A2 as typically for an extension or settlement (indefinite leave to remain) route, and B1 as typically for settlement or British citizenship. Those are general descriptions from one site, not a rule for any applicant, so do not choose a level from them.

ielts.org's page on IELTS tests for UK visas and immigration says that for visas that require CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) level B1 in two skills, you need a Pass in the IELTS for UKVI Life Skills B1 test (Listening and Speaking). This page gives no visa or immigration advice and cannot say which test or level applies to you.

A visa requirement is not a university requirement

The English requirement for a visa route and the requirement of a university or programme are separate: different bodies set them, both vary by country, institution and course, and both change over time. There is no single IELTS number for the UK. See IELTS scores for study abroad for how to read each.

One Kuwait source is worth knowing about. The Ministry of Higher Education's page for the Diplomats' Children scholarship (in Arabic) tells students who want to study in the UK to obtain IELTS Academic UKVI. That is the ministry's instruction on that page, for that route; it is not general advice, and this page cannot say whether it applies to you. What the ministry's pages say about IELTS scores is in IELTS scores for Kuwait Ministry of Higher Education scholarships.

Life Skills is pass or fail, not a band

ielts.com.kw gives the Life Skills result as pass or fail, with no 0 to 9 band score. One consequence is this page's own reading, not the provider's wording: there is no overall band to work out, so the IELTS band score calculator, which averages four skill bands, does not apply to a Life Skills result. To see how the test works, read the provider's Life Skills page.

Before you book: a checklist

General advice, not provider guidance:

  1. Get the exact test name and level in writing from the organisation or route that asks for your result, and check it against the UK government's guidance.
  2. Look for the test name on the booking page. An IELTS for UKVI session should say UKVI, and a Life Skills session should say Life Skills and the level.
  3. Check the venue and its tag. Open the address shown in the booking, and look the listing up in ielts.org's finder if you want to see whether it carries the UKVI Approved tag.
  4. Plan to sit it in person. ielts.org's wording points to a test centre, not to home.
  5. Allow for limited Life Skills availability, which ielts.com.kw describes as more limited than for computer-delivered IELTS.
  6. Book with the provider and keep the confirmation. Band Booster does not take test bookings.

How lessons with Mike fit alongside the test

Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutoring service, not a test centre. It is not connected to IDP, the British Council, ielts.com.kw, any university or any government body. It does not register you, hold a place, set test fees or dates, issue results or give visa or immigration advice. A lesson is practice with a teacher, not an IELTS for UKVI or Life Skills test, and nothing a lesson covers makes a result acceptable to an organisation.

Mike teaches every session himself, live on Google Meet in English, from Hanoi. He holds the Cambridge CELTA (July 2017) and scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS (about Mike). Speaking and Listening practice in English is part of what a session can cover, with feedback during the session; see IELTS Speaking coaching and IELTS Listening coaching. This page does not claim that a lesson matches the Life Skills format or prepares anyone for it, and no band, pass or timeline is promised: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions.

There is no classroom in Kuwait: you join from home, and the booking page shows each time in your own time zone and your price in your own currency, with the payment options, before you pay. Kuwait is in a higher regional price tier than Vietnam. A regular session lasts 60 minutes, a paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on your first booking, you can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before a session, and there is no subscription or package. For lessons from Kuwait, see online IELTS tutor for Kuwait City and online IELTS tutor for Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.

For the test itself, see IELTS test venues in Kuwait, booking IELTS in Kuwait, computer-delivered IELTS in the five Gulf countries (it leaves IELTS for UKVI to the provider) and Academic or General Training.

Common questions

What is the difference between IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills?

ielts.com.kw, which describes itself as IDP IELTS Kuwait, describes IELTS for UKVI as an IELTS test approved by UK Visas and Immigration for visa and immigration applications, and ielts.org's centre page for one Kuwait City venue lists IELTS UKVI Academic and IELTS UKVI General Training. Life Skills is a separate test: ielts.com.kw says it covers Speaking and Listening only, in a single session of approximately 16 to 22 minutes depending on the level, and the result is pass or fail rather than a 0 to 9 band. ielts.com.kw adds that UK Visas and Immigration decides which test and level you need, so check the UK government's guidance for your route.

Where can I take IELTS Life Skills in Kuwait?

ielts.com.kw says Life Skills is offered at the IDP IELTS office in Salmiya and that availability is more limited than for computer-delivered IELTS. It names no other venue and does not say there are none, so check the booking page for the venue and sessions shown for your test and level. Lists change, so check the venue shown in your booking before you pay.

Which Kuwait venues are tagged UKVI Approved?

ielts.org's finder tags several Kuwait listings UKVI Approved, for example the IDP Education listing in Salmiya, a listing in Abu Halifa, listings in Kuwait City and a listing in Sabah Al Salem, but not every listing of every venue, and a venue can appear twice, once with the tag and once without. On 24 October 2026 about half of its 20 Kuwait listings carried the tag. Check the tag for the session you book; the venues guide lists each area.

Can I take IELTS for UKVI or Life Skills from home?

ielts.org says UKVI will only accept tests taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre (its wording), and ielts.com.kw describes Life Skills as taken face to face with another candidate and one examiner. The sources read for this page therefore point to a test centre, not to home. Confirm the arrangements with the provider before you pay.

Is Life Skills scored in bands, and which level do I need?

No band: ielts.com.kw gives the result as pass or fail. It says UK Visas and Immigration decides which level and test you need and tells candidates to confirm the requirement in the UK government's guidance before booking; it describes A1, A2 and B1 only in general terms, each as typically for certain routes. ielts.org says that for visas requiring CEFR level B1 in two skills, a Pass in the IELTS for UKVI Life Skills B1 test (Listening and Speaking) is needed. This page cannot say which level applies to you.

What does the Kuwait Ministry of Higher Education say about IELTS Academic UKVI?

Its page for the Diplomats' Children scholarship tells students who want to study in the UK to obtain IELTS Academic UKVI. That is the ministry's instruction on that page, for that route, and this page cannot say whether it applies to you. A university's own admission requirement is separate, so ask the university and check GOV.UK.

Does Band Booster register me for these tests or prepare me for them?

It does not register you: Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutor, not a test centre, and you book the test with the provider, which sets the exam fee and the dates. Mike, who is CELTA-certified and scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS, teaches one-to-one on Google Meet, and Speaking and Listening practice in English is part of what a session can cover. This page does not claim that a lesson matches the Life Skills format, and no band or pass is promised.
