What IELTS for UKVI is, according to the providers
IDP UAE's IELTS for UKVI page says IELTS for UKVI tests are accepted by United Kingdom Visas and Immigration (UKVI) as proof of English for people who want to live, work or study in the UK. ielts.org's page on IELTS tests for UK visas and immigration describes IELTS for UKVI as a secure English language test (SELT).
Both pages give the same rule on how it is taken: in person, at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre. IDP's reason is that UKVI requires an additional layer of security when language tests are taken. Whether you need an IELTS for UKVI test at all is for the organisation or visa route asking for your result to say. This page gives no visa or immigration advice; for the government's side, start from GOV.UK.
Everything below was read on 24 October 2026 on the providers' pages and the ielts.org test centre finder. It changes, so confirm with the provider before you book. This page quotes no exam fees or dates.
The four tests IDP UAE names
IDP UAE's page names four tests: IELTS for UKVI, and three Life Skills tests, Life Skills A1, A2 and B1. IDP's Dubai test dates page lists these UKVI test types in its test-type filter: Academic for UKVI, General Training for UKVI, Life Skills A1 and Life Skills B1.
| Test | IDP UAE's IELTS for UKVI page | IDP's Dubai test dates page (test-type filter) |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS for UKVI | Named | Listed as two types: Academic for UKVI and General Training for UKVI |
| Life Skills A1 | Named | Listed |
| Life Skills A2 | Named | Not among the four types listed when read |
| Life Skills B1 | Named | Listed |
A city page shows what it listed on the day it was read; it does not say what is offered in other cities or on other dates, and a name in a filter does not by itself show that sessions are open. Which tests a venue and a date offer is for the provider's booking page to show, so check the test name on the session you choose and make sure it says UKVI.
The Life Skills tests
For the Life Skills tests, IDP's page asks for a Pass in Listening and Speaking. The British Council's UAE page says some of its IELTS for UKVI test centres deliver the Life Skills test via video calls. It adds that the test is still taken at an official UKVI test centre and is delivered by a Life Skills examiner. The sentence we read does not name the centres, so ask yours how your session is held.
Where IELTS for UKVI is listed in the UAE
The sources do not give the same answer, so read them side by side.
| Source | What it says about the UAE |
|---|---|
| British Council UAE, IELTS for UKVI page | Says it offers IELTS for UKVI in Dubai and Abu Dhabi (the page spells it Abu-Dhabi) |
| ielts.org test centre finder, United Arab Emirates | Labels venues UKVI Approved in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Sharjah; our recount is below |
| IDP, Dubai test dates page | Lists, in its test-type filter, Academic for UKVI, General Training for UKVI, Life Skills A1 and Life Skills B1 |
What the ielts.org finder shows
The finder's legend says the UKVI Approved label marks IELTS tests and IELTS Life Skills tests approved by UK Visas and Immigration for visa applications to the UK. We counted the finder's cards with that label for the UAE on 24 October 2026. That is our recount, not a figure ielts.org publishes, and it came to 10 distinct venues, including one listed under the name IELTS Life Skills and one listed with the abbreviation LS.
| City | Venues labelled UKVI Approved (our recount) |
|---|---|
| Dubai | 4 |
| Abu Dhabi | 3 |
| Al Ain | 2 |
| Sharjah | 1 |
| Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Dibba | None |
So the finder and the British Council differ: the British Council's sentence names Dubai and Abu Dhabi, while the finder also labels venues in Sharjah and Al Ain. We cannot say which list is more current, and a missing label on one list is not proof that nothing is offered there. This page names no individual venue; read the address on the session you book. For every venue label, emirate by emirate, see IELTS test venues across the UAE.
Format points to know before you book
- In person only. IDP UAE says UKVI accepts only tests taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre, and ielts.org repeats the in-person rule.
- No Writing on Paper. The British Council's UAE dates and locations page lists IELTS on computer with Writing on Paper and marks it as not available for UKVI tests. For the computer formats in general, see computer-delivered IELTS in Dubai and the UAE.
- Life Skills by video call at some centres. As above, the British Council says some of its UKVI centres deliver Life Skills this way, so ask your centre how your session is held.
What the score levels mean
Levels are written as CEFR, scores as bands
The providers' pages organise UKVI requirements by CEFR level, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and then give the IELTS for UKVI score for each level. The British Council's page says its information is collated from the government website and tells readers to confirm with the government website or their receiving organisation. Both providers' pages point to GOV.UK for further guidance on proving your English.
| CEFR level on the page | IELTS for UKVI score the page gives | Which page |
|---|---|---|
| B1, IELTS for UKVI (not Life Skills) | At least 4.0 in all four components | IDP UAE and British Council UAE |
| B2 | At least 5.5 in all four components | IDP UAE and British Council UAE |
| C1 | At least 7.0 in all four components | IDP UAE and British Council UAE |
| Life Skills tests (A1, A2 and B1) | A Pass (Listening and Speaking) | IDP UAE and British Council UAE |
IDP's page gives B1 twice: a Pass in Life Skills B1 (Listening and Speaking), and at least 4.0 in all four components of IELTS for UKVI. The British Council page separates B1 in two skills from B1 in four skills in the same way. These figures are the minimums two providers print for those levels. They are not a statement of what any visa, university or employer asks of you: a visa minimum and a university's admission requirement are separate things, both vary by country, institution and course, and both change over time. Check the official page of the body asking for your result. For a wider look, see IELTS scores for study abroad.
Reading “in all four components”
When a page says 5.5 in all four components, it asks for that score in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The overall band is the average of the four skill scores, rounded to the nearest half band, so the overall number alone does not show whether one component is lower. Here is a made-up example, for the arithmetic only and not anyone's real result: scores of 6.5, 6.5, 6.5 and 5.0 average 6.125, which rounds to 6.0 overall, yet 5.0 is below 5.5. If a page asked for 5.5 in all four components, 5.0 in one would fall short even with an overall 6.0. Band scores run from 0 to 9 in half-band steps, and the IELTS band score calculator shows the rounding.
Before you book: a short checklist
This is general advice, not guidance from IDP, the British Council or ielts.org.
- Get the requirement from the body asking for your result. Ask for the exact test name and the score level in writing, or find them on its own page. This page cannot say which route needs which test.
- Choose a session whose name says UKVI. IDP's Dubai page, for example, has Academic for UKVI and General Training for UKVI in its test-type filter. For how Academic and General Training differ in general, see Academic or General Training.
- Confirm the city and address. The British Council names Dubai and Abu Dhabi; the finder also labels Sharjah and Al Ain venues. Check the city on the booking before you pay.
- Plan to sit it in person at the centre, with no Writing on Paper option.
- Check fees, dates and change rules with the provider. IDP and the British Council set and change them, so this page quotes none. If you need to move or cancel, see moving or cancelling an IELTS test in the UAE.
Where one-to-one lessons with Mike fit
Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutoring service. It is not a test centre, it is independent of IDP, the British Council and Cambridge University Press & Assessment, and it does not register you, hold a place, set test fees or dates, or issue results. A lesson is practice with a teacher, not an IELTS test, and it does not replace a UKVI test taken in person at a UKVI centre.
Every lesson is one-to-one, live on Google Meet, in English, with Mike, who holds the Cambridge CELTA, teaches from Hanoi and scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS (about Mike). Writing Task 1 and Task 2 are marked against the public band descriptors, and Speaking runs Parts 1, 2 and 3 in the real test format, with feedback during the session. See IELTS Writing feedback and IELTS Speaking coaching; those two pages are written for Vietnam, so the prices on them do not apply to you. This page does not claim that a lesson matches the Life Skills format, so if you plan to sit a Life Skills test, ask the provider what it involves first.
The UAE is in a higher regional price tier than Vietnam, and the booking page shows your price in your own currency, with the payment options, before you pay. A paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on your first booking, and you can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before a session. No band is guaranteed: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions.
