The short answer: your provider's page and your booking confirmation decide
The sources do not word the rules in the same way. IDP UAE's reschedule and cancel page counts days before the test date, IDP's Ajman test-dates page counts weeks, and ielts.org limits the new date and the number of transfers. So find out which provider you booked with, read its page and your booking confirmation, and ask the provider when they disagree.
Read on 24 October 2026. Rules change, so check the provider's page and your booking confirmation before you act. This page quotes no test fee, refund amount or test date.
| Source | What this page takes from it |
|---|---|
| IDP UAE, reschedule and cancel page | Day windows for transfers and cancellations; special consideration; a medical certificate; One Skill Retake |
| IDP UAE, Ajman test dates page | A rule counted in weeks for cancelling or rescheduling |
| ielts.org, cancellations, refunds and transfers | A new date within three months, one transfer per booking; a pointer to UKVI terms; local consumer protection law |
| British Council UAE, booking page | No refund or transfer for a test taker without valid ID on test day |
What IDP UAE's reschedule and cancel page says
IDP UAE's page sets out windows counted in days before your Listening, Reading and Writing test date. Every window is measured to that date, so check which date your booking confirmation shows.
| How far from the Listening, Reading and Writing date | A transfer | A cancellation |
|---|---|---|
| 15 or more days | Allowed at no charge. | Allowed, and part of the test fee can be claimed back (percentage not restated here). |
| 5 to 14 days | Allowed, with an administrative fee (percentage not restated here). | Allowed, but test fees are non-refundable. |
| Within 4 days | Not allowed; a transfer request in this period is treated as a cancellation. | Allowed, but test fees are non-refundable. |
The percentages are IDP's to state and can change, so this page does not restate them. As general advice, not an IDP rule: if your date sits close to a boundary, such as 14 or 15 days, ask IDP how it counts the days before you submit anything.
The page limits its own scope. A footnote on IDP UAE's page says the policy applies to IELTS on computer tests only, excluding IELTS for UKVI tests, and that additional policies might apply to your country; it tells readers to check the in-country policy with their local IDP centre. So your booking confirmation and your IDP centre come first.
Special consideration and a medical certificate
Two further parts of the same page apply in particular situations. The first is special consideration. The page says that if you are unable to attend your test, or your performance on the day is affected by illness, injury or another exceptional circumstance beyond your control, you can apply for special consideration at your test centre. You can apply before the test and up to two calendar days after the test date, applications are not accepted once results have been released, and special consideration does not adjust your band scores.
The second is the medical certificate. Under its question about being absent or sick on the day of your test, the page says that if you cannot attend because of a serious medical condition, you can provide a medical certificate within 5 days of your test date to receive a refund minus the local administrative cost.
This page does not state that cost, does not decide whether your case qualifies, and cannot say how these lines combine with the windows above, so read IDP's page and ask your IDP centre. For a result you have already received, see IELTS results in the UAE: online results, TRF copies and remarks.
One Skill Retake has its own cancellation line
IDP UAE's page also covers One Skill Retake. It says you are entitled to a full refund of the One Skill Retake test fee if you cancel 72 hours or more before the One Skill Retake test session. That count is in hours and runs to the retake session, not your original test. For who can use a retake and where it is listed, see IELTS One Skill Retake in the UAE, and for the general rules see One Skill Retake or a full retake.
IDP's Ajman page gives a different rule
IDP's Ajman test-dates page, as read on 24 October 2026, says that if you cancel or reschedule more than 5 weeks before the test you receive a refund minus an admin fee, and that within 5 weeks there is no refund unless there is a serious medical reason. That is a different kind of rule from the reschedule and cancel page: it counts weeks where the other page counts days, and it treats cancelling and rescheduling in one sentence.
This page uses the Ajman wording only to show that IDP's own pages are not worded the same, not to say which applies to a given booking: if they disagree for yours, your confirmation and your IDP centre decide. For where IDP, the British Council and the ielts.org finder list tests across the emirates, see IELTS test venues across the UAE, emirate by emirate.
What ielts.org says: the new date and the number of transfers
In the transfers part of its cancellations, refunds and transfers page, ielts.org says you must select a new test date, where available, within three months of your original test date, or the transfer is treated as a cancellation. It also says you can transfer the same booking only once.
Separately, near the top, the page tells people taking IELTS for UKVI (Academic), IELTS for UKVI (General Training) or IELTS for UKVI Life Skills to refer to the UKVI terms and conditions, which are specific to those tests. This page does not state those terms, so check them if your booking is UKVI. See IELTS for UKVI in the UAE.
These lines answer different questions from IDP UAE's day windows (which new date, and how many times, rather than how late you can ask), and this page cannot say how they combine for your booking. ielts.org also says that if local consumer protection law in the country where you registered gives cancellation and transfer rights that are more favourable than its published terms, the local law applies. This page does not say what UAE law provides, and it gives no legal advice.
The British Council: no valid ID, no refund or transfer
The British Council's UAE booking page says that test takers without valid ID on test day will be unable to take the test and are ineligible for refunds or transfers. This page states no other British Council rule on moving or cancelling, so if you booked with the British Council, read the terms that came with your booking and ask it. For the ID that the British Council and IDP each name for the UAE, see IELTS test day in the UAE: Emirates ID or passport.
Before you move or cancel: a checklist
General advice built from the points above, not a provider rule. Where your booking confirmation says something different, follow it.
- Find out which provider you booked with, IDP or the British Council, and use that provider's page.
- Open your booking confirmation, find the date of your Listening, Reading and Writing, and count the days from today.
- Check whether your test is IELTS for UKVI, because IDP UAE's page excludes UKVI tests from its policy and ielts.org points to separate UKVI terms for them.
- If you are near a boundary, such as 14 or 15 days or 4 days, ask the provider how it counts before you submit a request.
- If you want a new date, ask which dates are open and whether ielts.org's three-month and one-transfer lines apply to your booking.
- Keep the provider's reply with your booking confirmation.
Where Band Booster fits, and its separate lesson rule
Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutor, not a test centre. It is independent of IDP, the British Council and Cambridge University Press & Assessment, and it does not register you for the test, set test fees or dates, or issue results. Changes to a test booking are made with the provider you booked with.
Lessons with Mike have their own rule, and it is not a test rule. Keep the two apart:
| Point | Your IELTS test booking | Lessons with Mike |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets the rule | The provider you booked the test with | Band Booster |
| Moving | See the provider's page and your confirmation; the windows above are IDP UAE's | Reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before the slot |
| Cancelling | See the provider's page and your confirmation | Cancellations inside 12 hours are not refunded |
The 12-hour rule covers lessons booked with Band Booster only; it has no effect on IDP's or the British Council's terms for your test, and their terms have none on your lessons. If your test date moves, book lessons as you need them: there is no subscription and no package to commit to.
What Band Booster does offer is preparation. Mike, a CELTA-certified teacher based in Hanoi who scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS, teaches every lesson himself, one-to-one and live on Google Meet in English, with Speaking practised in the real three-part format and Writing marked against the public band descriptors. See about Mike, IELTS Speaking coaching and IELTS Writing feedback.
The UAE is in the higher regional price tier, and the booking page shows your price in your own currency before you pay. A paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on your first booking. No band is guaranteed: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions. The page for Dubai and the UAE sets out the time difference with Hanoi, and online IELTS tutor by country covers other countries.
