IELTS for UKVI in the United States: One Test Centre, Life Skills and What to Check

Last updated:

ielts.org's IELTS USA page names one UKVI testing location in the US, and its ielts.org listing (read in October 2026) shows UKVI Academic and General Training on computer plus Life Skills A1 and B1; Life Skills is not scored, only Pass or Fail. Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutor, not a test centre: ask the organisation that wants your result which test it requires.

Price: USD 57.76 for a 60-minute one-to-one lesson; USD 13.48 for the paid 30-minute trial. Amounts use the same price tiers as the booking page, in US dollars at exchange rates set on 6 October 2026. The booking page shows the exact amount before you pay, and PayPal charges the same US-dollar amount.

ielts.org's IELTS USA page says one US test centre offers the only UKVI testing in the country, and that centre's ielts.org listing, read in October 2026, shows UKVI Academic and UKVI General Training on computer plus Life Skills A1 and B1. Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutor, not a test centre: Mike, a CELTA-certified teacher based in Hanoi who scored 8.5 in IELTS Speaking, teaches one-to-one on Google Meet, and the booking page shows your price in your own currency before you pay.

Band Booster IELTS is not a test centre. It does not register candidates, set exam fees, issue results or give visa or immigration advice. This page sets out what ielts.org, the one US centre's own page and GOV.UK say about IELTS for UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) in the United States, so you know what to ask before you book. Everything here was read in October 2026 and pages change, so use the links to read the current version. This page quotes no exam fee and no test date.

Start with the organisation that asked for your result. ielts.org's IELTS USA page tells you to check with the appropriate immigration authorities which test is required before you book. Band Booster cannot say whether you need a UKVI test, an Academic or General Training test, or a Life Skills test.

One UKVI testing location in the US

According to the IELTS USA page on ielts.org, one testing location offers the only UKVI testing in the US. ielts.org lists that centre in Arlington, Virginia, in the Washington DC metro area, and its listing page shows the entries in the next section. ielts.org's page implies that anyone testing for UKVI in the US travels to that one location; whether a test taken somewhere else would do is a question for the organisation asking for your result. Our page for the Washington DC area covers the centre's logistics, so this page keeps to what the UKVI tests involve. The list of every US listing is on IELTS test centres in the United States.

Why the place of the test matters

ielts.org's page on IELTS tests for UK visas and immigration says UKVI will only accept tests taken in person at an IELTS for UKVI test centre, and that UKVI requires an additional layer of security when taking language tests. Those are rules about where and how a UKVI test is taken, not only about which test you choose. This page does not describe what the extra security involves: read ielts.org's page and ask the centre.

What the centre's ielts.org listing shows

The table follows the centre's listing on ielts.org as read in October 2026. The listing also carries entries that are not UKVI tests; they are not covered here.

Entry on the listingHow it appears
UKVI Academic TestListed with Computer as its delivery option.
UKVI General Training TestListed the same way, on computer.
Life Skills A1Listed as an entry.
Life Skills B1Listed as an entry.

The listing does not show a Writing on Paper option for either UKVI entry. Two limits apply. These are only the entries on one centre's listing as read in October 2026, and listings can change. And a listing does not tell you which entry your application needs: the organisation that asked for your result decides that. If you are unsure whether you need Academic or General Training, ask the same organisation before you look at dates.

Life Skills: Pass or Fail, not a band score

ielts.org's Life Skills page says that, unlike its other tests, IELTS for UKVI Life Skills is not scored. You receive a Pass or a Fail result instead. That means there is no overall band to work out, so the band score calculator, which averages four skill scores, does not apply to it.

The centre's listing shows two Life Skills entries, A1 and B1. The title of ielts.org's Life Skills page names three levels, A1, A2 and B1, so it names a level that this centre's listing does not show. This page does not say whether the centre offers A2, and it does not describe what any level involves. Read ielts.org's Life Skills page for that, find out from the organisation asking for your result which level it wants, and ask the centre whether it offers that level.

ID for UKVI and Life Skills tests

This rule comes from the centre's own page, not from ielts.org. For UKVI and Life Skills candidates, it says only a valid passport is accepted unless another identification document has been specifically approved. It is the rule of that centre for those tests, not a statement about every IELTS test in the US. If you hold a different document, ask the centre before you book rather than on test day. What ielts.org and other US centre pages say about ID for the standard tests is on our test-day page.

What the centre says it does not offer

The centre's own page says that IELTS Online (the version you can take from home) and the one-skill-retake option are not available at its centre. That is the centre's statement about itself. This page does not say what any other centre offers, and it does not say whether the organisation asking for your result would accept either option. For general background on the retake option, see IELTS One Skill Retake, and for the computer format, computer-delivered IELTS in the United States.

Results: how long they take and how long a result lasts

ielts.org's page on getting and sharing your results gives these ranges. They are published timings, not promises.

TestResults after the test, per ielts.org
IELTS for UKVI1–5 days
IELTS for UKVI Life SkillsUp to 9 days

How long a result stays usable is a separate question. GOV.UK's page on secure English language tests (SELTs) says test results are valid for 2 years from the date the test is awarded. That is GOV.UK's statement about SELTs. It is not a general rule for every IELTS result, and this page cannot tell you how it applies to your application. The organisation asking for your result may state its own time limit, so ask it.

Put both against your own deadlines: ielts.org gives the days a result takes to arrive, and GOV.UK gives a validity period for SELT results.

A checklist before you book

  1. Ask who decides. Find out from the organisation or immigration authority which test it requires, and which level of Life Skills if that applies. ielts.org says to confirm which test is required before you book.
  2. Match the answer to the listing. Compare what you were told with the entries above: UKVI Academic, UKVI General Training, Life Skills A1 or B1. If they do not match, ask the centre and the organisation.
  3. Check your ID. The centre's page says a valid passport, unless another document has been specifically approved. Ask first if your passport is not an option.
  4. Note what is not offered. The centre's page says IELTS Online and One Skill Retake are not available there.
  5. Put the timings against your own dates. Results take 1–5 days (Life Skills up to 9), and GOV.UK gives 2 years for SELT results from the date the test is awarded.
  6. Ask about fees and dates. This page quotes no exam fee and no test date, because both can change. Ask the centre for the current exam fee and the available dates before you plan around them.

Where lessons with Mike fit

Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutoring service. Mike, who holds the Cambridge CELTA (July 2017), teaches every session himself from Hanoi, one-to-one and live on Google Meet in English. In his own IELTS he scored 8.5 in Speaking; About Mike has the detail.

Sessions cover Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking in the real test format, and General English (conversation, pronunciation, job interviews, presentations, work email). Writing is marked against the public band descriptors, and Speaking Parts 1, 2 and 3 are practised with feedback in the moment. See IELTS Speaking coaching and the online IELTS tutor page for the USA.

This page does not claim that a lesson prepares you for the Life Skills format or the extra security of a UKVI test day. If you want to know whether a session would suit your situation, email mkcenter007@gmail.com before you book. The booking page shows your price in your own currency before you pay, a regular lesson lasts 60 minutes, and a paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on a first booking. You can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before the slot. No band is promised: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions.

The centre's own page says only a valid passport is accepted for UKVI and Life Skills candidates unless another identification document has been specifically approved. That is the centre's rule, not ielts.org's, so ask the centre before booking if you hold a different document. Our test-day page covers what ielts.org and other centre pages say about ID.
