The short answer: Qatar University sets IELTS programme by programme
Qatar University (QU) has no single IELTS score for its master's and PhD programmes. Its graduate programme-requirements page gives each programme its own English line, and its required test scores page sets the rules that apply across them: which IELTS version international applicants submit, and how old a result may be.
This page reports what QU's pages say, as read in October 2026. It is not admission advice, and meeting a figure is not a promise of a place. Requirements change and differ by programme, so open your own programme's entry before you book a test. This page quotes no exam fee, no application or tuition fee and no deadline. Band Booster IELTS is a private tutoring service with no connection to QU.
Scores by programme: what the pages list
The rows are examples, not the whole list: QU's page has many more entries, so find yours. The first row says "many", not "all".
| Programme (as QU's page names it) | IELTS (Academic) | TOEFL iBT on the same line | What else the entry says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Many graduate programmes (the common line) | 6 | 68 | Taken within 2 years of the start of the intended semester. |
| Master of Arts in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment; Master of Education in Education Leadership; Master of Education in Special Education | 5.5 | 61 | A conditional route at IELTS 5 or TOEFL iBT 45 is described (see below). |
| Master of Health Professions Education | 6.5 on QU's English page; 6 on its Arabic page | 68 | See the 6.5 section below. |
| Doctorate in Clinical Sciences | 6.5 (overall) | No figure in the entry | The criterion says the result must be obtained within the last two years (see below). |
| PhD in Law, International Law track only | 6.5 | 79 | The line applies to this track only. |
| PhD in Engineering - Chemical Engineering | No IELTS figure | 68, "or equivalent test" | The PhD in Engineering - Civil Engineering entry, by contrast, lists IELTS 6. |
| Executive Master in Leadership | None listed | None listed | The entry gives Arabic as the language of instruction. |
| Master of Law in Public Law; Master of Law in Private Law; PhD in Islamic Faith and Thought | None listed | None listed | No English test is listed. The Islamic Faith and Thought entry lists a "linguistic knowledge test" without naming a language. |
Two cautions. TOEFL figures are shown as printed: this page converts nothing between TOEFL and IELTS, and the pairings differ (a 6.5 sits beside 68 in one entry and beside 79 in another). And most entries give one figure without saying whether it is an overall band or a minimum in each skill; only the Doctorate in Clinical Sciences says overall. Ask your programme how it applies the figure.
Education programmes: 5.5, and a conditional route at 5
Three education entries list IELTS (Academic) 5.5 or TOEFL iBT 61: the Master of Arts in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, the Master of Education in Education Leadership and the Master of Education in Special Education. The same 5.5 line also appears for the Comparative Cultural Studies concentration listed under the Master of Arts in Arabic Literature and Language entry.
The conditional route: IELTS 5 or TOEFL iBT 45
On the three education entries, QU's page says students with a minimum of 5 in IELTS (Academic) or 45 in TOEFL iBT may be admitted. They must enrol in an English for Special Purpose (ESP) course offered by QU's Foundation Program in their first semester and pass it with at least a grade of C before taking the master's courses taught in English. Three points to keep straight:
- Where it appears. On the three entries named above. Whether your programme has it is for its own entry.
- "May be admitted" is not "will be admitted". The page does not say how the decision is made.
- The grade matters. The page does not say what follows if the course is not passed with at least a C, so ask the programme.
As general advice, not QU's wording: ask about the route, and aim for the programme's main figure if you can.
The 6.5 entries, and where QU's English and Arabic pages differ
QU's English programme page lists 6.5 for four entries: the Master of Health Professions Education, the Graduate Certificate in Health Professional Education, the Doctorate in Clinical Sciences (a minimum overall score of 6.5 on the academic IELTS, obtained within the last two years) and the International Law track of the PhD in Law.
Check which language version you read. QU's Arabic programme-requirements page, also read in October 2026, lists IELTS 6 beside TOEFL iBT 68 for the two health education programmes, while its Clinical Sciences and International Law entries show 6.5 as the English page does. This page cannot tell you which health education figure is current, so ask the programme before you plan around either.
Programmes that list no English test
The Executive Master in Leadership entry gives Arabic as the language of instruction and lists no English test, and the Master of Law in Public Law and Master of Law in Private Law entries list none either. That describes what an entry lists. It is not a statement that no test is needed: QU's required test scores page applies to graduate programmes that require English competency and does not say which those are. If your programme is one of these, ask QU's admissions office what applies to you before you decide whether to sit IELTS.
Programmes also differ in which test they name. The Chemical Engineering PhD entry names TOEFL iBT "or equivalent test" and no IELTS figure; ask whether IELTS counts as an equivalent.
A previous degree taught in English
QU's required test scores page names two ways to show English: a previous degree from an institution of higher education in a programme where English was the language of instruction, or a TOEFL (or equivalent) result. Many entries print the degree option beside the score. This page does not say that a degree exempts you: the English page says "a previous degree" while the Arabic page speaks of bachelor's study, not every entry lists the option, and the entries do not say what proof is needed or who decides. Ask the programme before you rely on it.
Which IELTS: Academic for international applicants
QU asks international applicants, meaning applicants from outside Qatar, to submit only the IELTS Academic version. General Training is a different test (its Writing Task 1 is a letter, not a description of a chart or diagram), so it is not the version QU names here. See IELTS Academic or General Training.
How long a result lasts: two years, counted to the start of the semester
QU's page says English test scores are no longer valid if they are older than 2 years from the start of the semester of the intended admission, and that students with older scores must re-take the required test. So the age of your result is measured at the first day of the semester you want to join, not on the day you apply.
- Count back from the semester. Take the start of the semester you are aiming for and count two years back; a test taken before that is too old.
- Watch your programme's wording. The Doctorate in Clinical Sciences criterion says the result must be obtained within the last two years, while the documents list in the same entry says taken within 2 years of the start of the intended semester of admission. If the two readings matter for your dates, ask the programme.
- Leave room for results. IELTS results in Qatar sets out how long results take and where the sources differ. If you may need another attempt, see One Skill Retake or a full retake.
QU's Testing Center also reserves the right to verify standardised test scores and to re-test students.
Overall band or every skill? Do the sum
The overall band is the average of the four skill bands, rounded to the nearest half band: an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. The scores below are made up to show the arithmetic; they are not anyone's results.
| Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | Average | Overall band |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6.0 | 5.5 | 5.5 | 6.0 | 5.75 | 6.0 |
| 6.0 | 6.0 | 5.0 | 5.0 | 5.5 | 5.5 |
The first row reaches an overall 6 with two skills at 5.5; the second has two skills at 6 yet an overall of 5.5. So if an entry asks for 6, ask whether it means the overall band, every skill or both. The IELTS band score calculator does the sum for your own four scores.
What this page does not cover
- First-degree entry. QU's undergraduate rules are on their own page; for Hamad Bin Khalifa University, see IELTS for HBKU.
- Fees and deadlines. Read them on QU's pages. The test providers set exam fees and test dates, and Band Booster IELTS does not register candidates. For test venues in Doha, see the Doha page.
- Visas. A programme minimum is not a visa rule, and this page gives no visa or immigration advice. See IELTS scores for study abroad.
Preparing for a master's or PhD target with Mike
Band Booster IELTS is a private tutoring service. It is not QU, a test centre or the exam board, and it makes no claim to be connected with the university. Mike teaches every session himself, one-to-one and live in English on Google Meet. He holds the Cambridge CELTA, is based in Hanoi and scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS (About Mike).
A session can cover Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking. Writing answers are marked against the public band descriptors (Writing feedback), and Speaking is practised in the real three-part format with feedback during the session (Speaking coaching). Once you know your programme's figure, tell Mike which skill is furthest from it, and start there.
A lesson is practice, not the test, and no band is promised: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions. The booking page shows each time in your own time zone and your price in your own currency before you pay; Qatar is in the higher regional price tier. A paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on a first booking. There is no subscription and no package, and you can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before the slot.
