What IELTS for UKVI is
The IELTS organisation describes IELTS for UKVI as a secure English language test (SELT). UKVI means UK Visas and Immigration, part of the Home Office. Its page also says the UKVI will only accept tests taken at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre.
The Home Office guidance on secure English language tests names the IELTS options as 'IELTS for UKVI' or 'IELTS Life Skills'. After you pass, you receive a SELT unique reference number, shown on IELTS results as the UKVI number, which you must use in the application.
How it differs from standard IELTS
The differences are mostly about the rules around the test, not the questions. This table sets out what the official pages say.
| Point | IELTS for UKVI | Standard IELTS |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Secure English language test (SELT) | Ordinary IELTS test |
| Where taken | Official IELTS for UKVI test centre only | Test centre; IELTS Online exists in some countries |
| Online option | Cannot be taken online | IELTS Online is Academic only |
| Result form | Shows a CEFR equivalent per skill, from 29 August 2024 | Not changed by the 29 August 2024 update |
On content, the Nursing and Midwifery Council states that the UKVI Academic test has the same content, format, scoring and level of difficulty as the standard Academic test. That is one regulator describing one test, so read it as a useful pointer, not a rule for every version.
Scores are calculated the same way. IELTS says the change to the UKVI result form, which now shows a CEFR equivalent for each skill, does not affect how scores are calculated, used or interpreted. Standard Academic and General Training forms did not change.
Academic or General Training?
On ielts.org, IELTS for UKVI has an Academic page and a General Training page, and IELTS for UKVI Life Skills is a separate set of tests. The Home Office list simply says 'IELTS for UKVI'. So the Home Office guidance does not settle which version you need. The visa route, university or regulator that receives your result decides.
Which one can you use?
- Student route, degree level or above: the IELTS page lists 'IELTS or IELTS for UKVI', so either is named for that level.
- Student route, below degree level: the page lists IELTS for UKVI only.
- Regulators: each sets its own list. The NMC page quoted above covers IELTS Academic and accepts the UKVI version.
- Universities: each states its own accepted tests. Some institutions may accept results from IELTS Online, according to ielts.org, but UKVI tests cannot be taken online.
Always check the current wording on the page of the body that will read your result. This page is general information, not personal advice on a visa or application.
A short checklist before you book
- Find the written requirement from the visa route, regulator or university.
- Note whether it names Academic, General Training, a UKVI version or Life Skills.
- If it says SELT or UKVI, book at an official IELTS for UKVI centre. Our guide to UKVI test centres in the UK covers the location list.
- If it names only IELTS, ask the body whether a UKVI result is also fine rather than guessing.
- Keep your UKVI number when results arrive.

How lessons with Mike can help with this
The UKVI and standard versions are separate in rules, not in the skills you need. Mike teaches IELTS Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking one-to-one, live on Google Meet, in English. He marks Writing Task 1 and Task 2 against the public band descriptors, runs Speaking Parts 1 to 3 in the real format, and leaves written progress notes in your account. Mike holds a Cambridge CELTA (July 2017), has 12+ years teaching English and IELTS in Vietnam, Turkey and Iran, and scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS. He does not register you for the test or choose the version: you do that with the provider after checking your requirement. Lessons do not cover Life Skills or any other test. A paid 30-minute trial is available once, on a first booking, and you can see times in your own time zone. Read more about Mike.
