What this page covers, and what it does not
This page sets out what Kuwait University's graduate pages say about IELTS: one department page and one programme page that list scores, the Master's admission page, ielts.org's own listing for the university, and the pre-registration route that the College of Graduate Studies links to. The pages were read in October 2026. Requirements change and can vary by programme and department, so the page for your own department or programme is the final word. The College also has PhD and Graduate Diploma admission requirements pages, which this page does not cover: check those separately. This is general information about admission, not advice on any one application, and it does not cover visas.
Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutor. It is not Kuwait University or a test centre, it does not register anyone for IELTS, set exam fees or choose test dates, and it is not connected to the university, IDP, the British Council or any government body. This page quotes no exam fee and no test date.
The figures below come from pages with different year headings and do not all agree. Use the page for your own department or programme, and ask the College if it is unclear.
What a department page and a programme page say about IELTS
Each of these two pages lists its own figures.
| Page | Year in the page heading | IELTS overall | Each skill | TOEFL listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Computer Science department, graduate admission requirements | Graduate Admissions for 2026/2027 | 6 | All skills at least 5.5 | 500 |
| Master of Science in Civil Engineering (programme page on the College of Graduate Studies site) | Requirements 2024/2025 | 6 | 5.5 in each of Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing | 500 |
The two pages list the same numbers, but the Civil Engineering page carries an older year in its heading, and this page cannot tell whether that programme has revised its figures since. A page for one department or programme says nothing about another, so do not assume that either set of numbers applies to yours. TOEFL is listed beside IELTS on both pages; this page does not cover it.
What "overall 6, no skill below 5.5" means in practice
IELTS bands run from 0 to 9 in half-band steps. The overall band is the average of the four skills, rounded to the nearest half band: an average with a remainder of .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one with .75 rounds up to the next whole band. A line such as "overall 6, every skill at least 5.5" therefore sets two separate tests, and a result can pass one and fail the other. The table uses hypothetical scores to show the arithmetic only. They are not anyone's results and not a prediction.
| Example A | Example B | Example C | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 6.5 | 5.5 | 6.0 |
| Reading | 6.5 | 5.5 | 6.0 |
| Writing | 5.0 | 5.5 | 5.5 |
| Speaking | 6.0 | 5.5 | 5.5 |
| Average of the four | 6.0 | 5.5 | 5.75 |
| Overall band | 6.0 | 5.5 | 6.0 (rounded up) |
| Overall of 6 reached? | Yes | No | Yes |
| Every skill at least 5.5? | No (Writing is 5.0) | Yes | Yes |
In Example A a strong Listening and Reading carry the overall band while Writing sits under the per-skill figure; in Example B every skill clears 5.5 but the overall falls short.
The Master's admission page: a pointer, not a number
The Master's admission requirements page on the College of Graduate Studies site gives no IELTS score. It says applicants must be proficient in the language of instruction for their chosen programme and, for programmes taught in Arabic, in another language as the department determines. It also refers to additional criteria that may include preliminary tests or extra courses. The number for your programme therefore sits on the department or programme page. Its Admission menu lists an English Exams page, which offers a way to schedule IELTS (see below).
ielts.org's single indicative figure for the university
ielts.org keeps its own listing for Kuwait University among organisations that recognise IELTS. It shows one indicative minimum of 6.5 (Academic, all applications). It also says that all its scores are indicative and asks you to contact the institution directly for an accurate requirement. That single figure is higher than the figures on both pages above, which is why the three should not be read as one number.
ielts.org labels its own figure indicative, so treat it as a pointer rather than a requirement, and use the page for your own department or programme for the number that applies to your application. The listing says Academic. For how the two versions differ, see IELTS Academic or General Training, and ask your department which one it accepts.
Booking the test through the College of Graduate Studies
The College of Graduate Studies' English Exams page offers a link to schedule an IELTS exam. That link points to ielts.com.kw/cgs, a site that describes itself as IDP IELTS Kuwait. The steps below follow that page's order; the page itself, not this summary, is the authority.
- Pre-register. The page says its pre-registration form is intended only for applicants of the College of Graduate Studies at Kuwait University. The form asks for your name, email, phone number, date of birth and the test date you want, as well as your Civil ID number and a copy of the Civil ID, and a passport number and a passport copy.
- Your details are sent to the College for checking. After pre-registration, your details are saved and sent to the College of Graduate Studies to be verified, to confirm that you have applied at Kuwait University.
- Complete the booking and pay. You then complete the booking for the date you chose and come to "our office" to pay, which is the page's own wording; its footer lists an address in Salmiya. The page says your registration is not complete until payment is made.
The form's submit button reads "Pay and proceed to booking page", while the page's own steps say you pay at the office, so read the page's wording before you submit and note any reference number you are given. If something on the form does not fit your situation, ask the College of Graduate Studies or the office before you submit it.
These steps come from ielts.com.kw, not from a Kuwait University page. The College's English Exams page does link to it, and the site describes itself as IDP IELTS Kuwait, but this page cannot confirm more than that. Reach the form through the College's own link, and rely on the confirmation you receive.
For booking in Kuwait in general, see booking IELTS in Kuwait: ID, payment and changes and IELTS test venues in Kuwait. The route above is specific to College of Graduate Studies applicants, so where those guides differ from the pre-registration page, follow that page and your confirmation.
Collecting your results
The terms on that pre-registration page say that, when you collect your results, you must present valid government-issued photo ID that matches your registered details exactly. They describe Kuwait University as an offsite collection point where results can be collected from the university's premises, and say its staff verify your identity before releasing your Test Report Form (TRF). If someone collects for you, the terms list three things: their own valid photo ID, a signed authorisation letter from you, and a copy of your ID document. Give your details on the form exactly as they appear on that ID, and read those terms in full before you send anyone in your place. They describe this route only; for how results, the Test Report Form and re-marking work in Kuwait in general, see IELTS results in Kuwait.
Questions to put to your department before you book
- Which page applies to my programme, and for which intake? The two pages carry different years.
- Academic or General Training? ielts.org's listing says Academic; ask which version your department accepts.
- How is the per-skill figure applied? Ask whether all four scores should come from one sitting.
- How old can a result be? Most institutions treat IELTS scores as valid for 2 years, so ask for the university's own rule.
- When should I pre-register? Your details go to the College to check that you have applied, so ask at what stage to book.
For how score requirements differ between institutions and change over time, see IELTS scores for study abroad. Undergraduate applicants have a separate page: IELTS for Kuwait University undergraduate admission.
Preparing for a graduate-level score
Both pages set a figure for every skill as well as an overall one, so one weak skill can hold back an otherwise good result. General teaching advice, not from the university or the test providers:
- Find the weakest skill first. Do a timed practice in each of the four skills and compare them, because a per-skill minimum can fail on a single low score.
- Know the shape of each paper. Listening is 30 minutes with 40 questions in 4 parts, and the recording is played once. Reading is 60 minutes with 40 questions. Writing is 60 minutes: Task 1 is at least 150 words (about 20 minutes) and Task 2 at least 250 words (about 40 minutes). Speaking is an interview of 11 to 14 minutes in three parts.
- Plan the hour of Writing. Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1 in the Writing band, so decide the split of the 60 minutes before test day. In Academic, Task 1 describes a chart, graph, table, diagram or process; in General Training it is a letter.
- Practise Speaking aloud. The Speaking Part 2 timer helps you rehearse the long turn: one minute to prepare, then one to two minutes of speaking.
How lessons with Mike can help
Mike holds the Cambridge CELTA, teaches from Hanoi, and scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS. Every session is one-to-one, live on Google Meet and in English, never a group class. A session can cover Listening, Reading, Writing (Task 1 and Task 2, marked against the public band descriptors) or Speaking (Parts 1, 2 and 3 in the real test format), with feedback during the session, and written progress notes follow each one in your account. See about Mike, IELTS Speaking coaching and IELTS Writing feedback.
Band Booster cannot choose your test date, register you or tell you which score your programme needs. No band is promised, and progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions. Kuwait is in a higher regional price tier than Vietnam. The booking page shows your price in your own currency, and the payment options, before you pay, and your first booking can be the paid 30-minute trial, once. For the time difference with Hanoi, see online IELTS tutor for Kuwait City.
