Two different ways to spend your prep time
A group course at a trung tâm and a private tutor solve different problems, so the honest answer to "which is better" depends on what you already know and how you learn. This page compares the two on what actually changes your outcome: how the lesson is paced, how much the schedule can bend, how the cost is structured, and how quickly you get feedback on your own writing and speaking.
Pacing: built for the room, or built for you
In a group course, one teacher usually plans each lesson for the class as a whole, so the pace is set for the group rather than for any one student. If your Writing sits at 5.5 and the rest of the class is closer to 6.5, the lesson may move faster than you can follow, and the same can be true in reverse if you're the one ahead.
A 1:1 session has no average to aim for. The 60 minutes goes wherever your band is actually stuck: more time on Task 2 if that's the gap, more time on Speaking Part 3 if that's where marks are lost. The online IELTS tutor page walks through how a session is structured skill by skill.
Schedule: a fixed timetable, or a slot you choose
Many group courses run on the center's timetable: a set day and time each week for the length of the course, agreed in advance for the whole class. That suits a stable weekly routine, and it can be harder to work around shift work, travel, or a schedule that changes week to week. Options differ between centers, so check what the center you are considering offers.
1:1 sessions are booked one at a time from a live calendar, shown in your own timezone, so a session goes into whatever slot is actually free that week rather than the other way round.
Cost: a fixed course fee, or pay per session
Group courses are often priced as one fee for a fixed number of weeks. Refund, make-up and absence policies can differ between centers, so check the terms with the center you are considering. Because a teacher's time is shared across a class, group courses are often cheaper per hour than 1:1 coaching; for someone who mainly wants structure and doesn't need individual correction, that can be the more economical route.
Band Booster IELTS charges per session instead of a course fee. In Vietnam:
| Session | Length | Price in Vietnam |
|---|---|---|
| Trial session (once, first booking only) | 30 minutes | 150,000 ₫ |
| IELTS coaching session | 60 minutes | 500,000 ₫ |
| General English | 60 minutes | 450,000 ₫ |
| 6 or more IELTS sessions booked in one order (10% off, once per student, first qualifying order only) | 6+ × 60 minutes | 450,000 ₫ per session |
Booking 6 or more IELTS sessions together brings the price to 450,000 ₫ per session (10% off) — available once per student, on their first qualifying order only; every order after that is full price, and there's no discount for fewer than 6 sessions. There's no course fee, no subscription, and nothing charged for sessions you haven't booked. Students outside Vietnam see their own region's price, in their own currency, on the booking page before paying.
Feedback: in the same hour, or shared across a class
In a larger class, a teacher has to share their attention across every student, so individual feedback on a Task 2 essay or a Speaking answer can take longer to arrive, or be shorter, than it would be one-to-one; how much depends on the class size and the center.
In a 1:1 session, feedback happens while the answer is still fresh: Mike reads a Task 1 or Task 2 response with you inside the same hour, or stops a Speaking drill mid-answer to fix a specific error, rather than returning it as a mark on a page. The IELTS Writing feedback and IELTS Speaking coaching pages go into how that works for each skill.
Where a group course is the better choice
- You're still building basics — grammar, core vocabulary, exam format — rather than polishing a band you already have.
- You want peer practice: discussion partners, group Speaking drills, other students to compare your English against.
- Cost per hour matters more to you than individual correction; group courses are often cheaper per hour than 1:1.
- A fixed weekly slot suits your routine and you don't expect to need to move it.
Where 1:1 coaching is the better choice
- You've taken a practice test or the real exam and know roughly which of the four skills is capping your score.
- You need your own essays and your own speaking corrected, not general class material.
- Your schedule doesn't fit a fixed weekly class.
- You're working to a real deadline — a visa, a university offer, a job — and want every session spent on your own weakest skill.
The two aren't mutually exclusive: some students use a course for the basics, then move to 1:1 sessions to fix whichever skill is left holding their band down.
Who teaches the 1:1 sessions
Every session at Band Booster IELTS is taught by Mike, not a rotating team of tutors. He holds the Cambridge CELTA and has 12 years teaching English in Vietnam, Turkey and Iran; he currently teaches 250 students across 10 classes at Newton Grammar School in Hanoi. His own IELTS result is 7.5 overall, with 8.5 in Speaking. More on his background is on the about Mike page.
Booking and payment
Sessions are booked from a live calendar on the booking page, shown in your own timezone, and run over Google Meet. Payment is by PayPal, Vietnamese bank transfer (VietQR), or USDT — Stripe is not currently available to businesses based in Vietnam, so payment stays to these three methods.
Not sure which fits? The 30-minute trial session is a low-commitment way to find out — it's taught by Mike, one-to-one, with feedback given in the session itself, not returned later. Book a trial session in your own timezone; the booking page shows the price for your region before you pay.
