What One Skill Retake means in the UAE
One Skill Retake lets someone who has taken a full IELTS test sit one of the four skills again instead of repeating the whole test. This page covers the UAE side: what IDP UAE and the British Council UAE say about who can use it, where it is listed and which organisations accept it. It rests on their pages and on the ielts.org test centre finder, all read on 24 October 2026. Rules, labels and lists change, so confirm each point with your provider before you book. This page quotes no exam fee and no test date.
For the general picture, including how to register, how a re-mark differs from a retake and when a full retake is the better route, see IELTS One Skill Retake: fee, how to register and what you can retake. It is not repeated here.
The UAE rules, side by side
Each line is one provider's statement, paraphrased from a page read on 24 October 2026. A line from one provider is not a rule for the other, and the provider's own wording is the one that counts.
| Point | What the page says | Page |
|---|---|---|
| One retake | A retake can be completed only once per full IELTS test. | IDP UAE |
| One skill | You can retake one skill, once per original test. | British Council UAE |
| Time limit | The eligibility section says to book the retake within 60 days of the original test date. The eligibility list on the same page says you sit it within 60 days of the full test, and its FAQ says up to 60 days between the original test and the retake. | IDP UAE |
| Time limit | Sit the retake within 60 days of the original test. | British Council UAE |
| Passport | Use the same valid passport that you used to book the original test. | IDP UAE |
| Provider | The test centre must belong to the same company as the original test; an IDP test needs an IDP centre. | IDP UAE |
| Tests covered | IELTS Academic and General Training on computer, and IELTS for UKVI on computer. | British Council UAE |
| Writing on Paper | A retake for Writing on Paper must be taken in the same delivery mode as the original test. | ielts.org, test delivery update |
| Where to book | From the Retake button in the Test Taker Portal. | British Council UAE |
The time limit needs care. IDP UAE's page words it both as booking and as sitting the retake within 60 days, and the British Council UAE words it as sitting. This page cannot say what happens to a retake that is booked inside the 60 days but sat after them, so ask your provider which date counts. As general advice, plan to sit the retake inside the 60 days, counting from the original test date.
Who can use it
One skill, one retake. If two skills are short, this route covers only one of them, because both UAE pages limit it to a single retake per test. The general page above compares it with a full retake.
The same passport. IDP UAE asks for the same valid passport that you used to book the original test. This page states no British Council ID rule for the retake, so if your original test was with the British Council, ask it which ID to bring. For the wider test-day question of Emirates ID or passport, see IELTS test day in the UAE: Emirates ID or passport.
The same company. The same-company rule in the table is IDP UAE's, and its page also tells applicants to check that the organisation they apply to accepts a retake taken in a different country. If your original test was with the British Council, follow its UAE page.
Computer, UKVI and Writing on Paper
Both providers frame the retake around IELTS on computer. The British Council UAE page lists it for Academic, General Training and IELTS for UKVI on computer, and IDP's city pages, covered below, call it generally supported for IELTS on computer.
ielts.org says a One Skill Retake for Writing on Paper must be taken in the same delivery mode as the original test. If your original Writing was on paper, ask your provider how that applies to your retake before you book. For the formats themselves, see our page on computer-delivered IELTS in Dubai and the UAE.
Where One Skill Retake is listed in the UAE
Two kinds of page show where the retake is offered; neither settles your case alone.
- The ielts.org finder. On 24 October 2026 the finder for the United Arab Emirates carried a One Skill Retake label on at least one card for 55 of about 57 distinct venue names, by our count. The two names without it have "LS" or "IELTS Life Skills" in the name. Some names have more than one card, and not every card carries the label. That is our own count of distinct names, not a figure ielts.org publishes, and it will change.
- IDP's city pages. IDP's UAE city pages (we read the Ajman and Dubai pages) describe the retake as generally supported for IELTS on computer, but say that availability depends on the specific venue on your test date.
A finder label does not show that the venue belongs to the company that ran your original test, or that a session is open on a date inside your 60 days. Check a date in the session list of the provider you took the original test with. For venues emirate by emirate, see IELTS test venues across the UAE, by emirate.
Who accepts it: the organisation lists
IDP UAE publishes a page listing organisations that accept One Skill Retake. Its United Arab Emirates section had about 48 names when we counted on 24 October 2026; that is our count, not a figure IDP publishes. Universities, employers and government bodies appear in it. As examples, written as IDP writes them: UAE University, Higher Colleges of Technology and The Emirates Group. They are named only as examples of what IDP lists, and naming them implies no partnership with, or endorsement by, any of them.
The same IDP page says One Skill Retake is accepted by more than 2,000 organisations worldwide and tells readers to check each organisation's own eligibility rules.
The British Council UAE page takes a different route. It says accepting organisations are shown on a page that it links to, that the page is updated from time to time, and that you can also check directly with your organisation. This page did not read that list, so it makes no claim about what the list contains.
Check acceptance before you book. A name on IDP's list is the start of the check, not the end of it, because the page itself sends you to the organisation's own rules. Whichever provider you tested with, put the question to the organisation that will read your result. This page names no required score for any organisation.
What the new Test Report Form shows
The British Council UAE page says you receive a new Test Report Form that carries your One Skill Retake score together with the scores from your original test and an overall CEFR score. It is valid for two years from the original test date, and it is electronic: a paper Test Report Form for a retake is not issued by default. The page also says your original scores stay the same and that you can choose whether to use your original or your new Test Report Form.
That is the British Council's statement; this page did not use IDP's page for result details, so if you tested with IDP, ask it how it issues the form. On the British Council's wording a retake does not move the original test date, so if an organisation sets its own age limit on results, ask it which date it counts from.
For result times, online results, copies of the Test Report Form and re-marks in the UAE, see IELTS results in the UAE. To move or cancel a booking, see moving or cancelling your IELTS test in the UAE.
Questions to put to the provider and the organisation
General advice, not guidance from IDP, the British Council or ielts.org. To the provider of your original test:
- Is there a retake session for my original test on a date inside my 60 days, at a venue I can reach?
- Which date counts for the 60 days: booking or sitting?
- Which delivery mode would my retake use, and is it the same as my original?
- Which passport or other ID do I need on the day?
To the organisation that will read your result:
- Do you accept One Skill Retake results, including one taken in a different country from the original test?
- Do you accept an electronic Test Report Form?
- From which date do you count the age of a result?
Preparing for the one skill you retake
Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutor, not a test centre. It is independent of IDP, the British Council and Cambridge University Press & Assessment, and it does not book retakes, register you, set test fees or dates, or issue results. You book the retake with your test provider.
For the preparation, lessons are one-to-one with Mike, who holds the Cambridge CELTA, teaches from Hanoi and scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS (about Mike). They are live on Google Meet in English, with feedback during the lesson, and a lesson can concentrate on the single skill you plan to retake: Speaking, Writing, Listening or Reading. Those pages are written for Vietnam, so ignore their prices; your own price is on the booking page.
General teaching advice, not from IDP, the British Council or ielts.org: look at all four scores before you pay for a retake, because the route fits one clear gap, not two. If a retake date is close, you can book several sessions in the same week when slots are open. No band is guaranteed: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions.
Price and booking from the UAE
The UAE is in a higher regional price tier than Vietnam, and the booking page shows your price in your own currency, with the payment options, before you pay. The calendar shows each slot in your own time zone. A paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on your first booking, there is no subscription or package, and you can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before a session.
