This page reports what four institutions in Qatar say on their own pages, read in October 2026: the Academic Bridge Program (ABP), Community College of Qatar (CCQ), Qatar University (QU) and UDST. Rules change and differ by programme, so check your own case on the institution's page. It gives no admission, visa or immigration advice, and Band Booster IELTS has no connection with any of these institutions.
The short answer: ABP and CCQ give IELTS figures for their routes; QU and UDST write Foundation as a placement test
"Below the direct-entry score" means different things in Qatar. ABP and CCQ give IELTS figures for their own routes. QU and UDST write their Foundation step as a placement test, though their pages also mention IELTS in related rules, as the last column shows.
| Institution | Route | What its page says | Where IELTS comes in |
|---|---|---|---|
| ABP | Application | IELTS 4.5 or above (or equivalent); IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo accepted; results from the last two years; a final high-school certificate, minimum average 70% | One line of the application |
| CCQ | Placement | A student must pass one of several English tests (ACCUPLACER, IELTS, TOEFL paper, TOEFL iBT); the IELTS ladder runs from Level 1 (0-3.5) to College Level (5.5). Its English page lists IELTS or TOEFL passed within two years among its exemption routes | One of several accepted tests; sets your level |
| QU | Foundation | Applicants to the colleges with Foundation Program requirements must take ACCUPLACER | Its placement-test page ties the ACCUPLACER ESL test to applicants who lack the minimum IELTS or TOEFL iBT scores (Medicine and Dental Medicine excepted) |
| UDST | Foundation (Bachelor's, Diploma) | Applicants below direct entry may be considered with an English placement test score of at least 35; below 35 is not eligible, Foundation included | The page separately says IELTS, TOEFL, SAT or ACT scores may be accepted instead of its placement tests, without saying whether that covers the 35 line |
The table is a summary, not any institution's rule: if it seems to disagree with an institution's page, follow the page.
Three questions to ask about any number you find
- Is it an IELTS band? Not always. UDST's 35 is a score on its English placement test, not a band, and nothing here converts it into one.
- What job does it do? At ABP the figure is an application line; at CCQ it is a rung on a placement ladder. Both pages show a 4.5, but they are separate rules, not one scale.
- How old may the result be? ABP says all test results should be from the last two years, and CCQ's English page refers to a test passed within the past two years. Most institutions apply two years to IELTS results, but each sets its own rule and these lines do not say when the count starts, so ask. If you have not sat the test yet, allow time for results: IELTS results in Qatar covers timings.
Academic Bridge Program: IELTS as one line of the application
ABP's admissions page (Arabic version) asks for IELTS 4.5 or above (or equivalent), says it accepts IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo, and adds that all test results should be from the last two years. Separately, it asks for a final high-school certificate with a minimum average of 70%.
- The certificate is its own line. A test result does not stand in for it. The English page adds that students with an average below 70% can still apply, with the application pending further review; the Arabic version words the line as 70% or level (C), so read the version you apply under.
- "Or equivalent" is ABP's wording. This guide does not convert TOEFL or Duolingo scores.
- Test and certificate are not the whole application. The page lists further steps; whether the programme is open to you is for ABP to say.
The lines quoted do not name IELTS Academic or General Training, so ask ABP which it takes (how the tests differ).
Community College of Qatar: one of several tests, with an IELTS ladder
CCQ's English language requirements page (Arabic version) says a student wishing to enrol must pass one of several English language level tests, with a separate score ladder for each: ACCUPLACER (which the page labels the Foundation Program test), IELTS, TOEFL paper and TOEFL iBT. IELTS is one accepted route, not the only one. Its IELTS ladder is below.
| Level | IELTS score on CCQ's page |
|---|---|
| Level 1 | 0-3.5 |
| Level 2 | 4.0 |
| Level 3 | 4.5 |
| Level 4 | 5.0 |
| College Level | 5.5 |
College Level at 5.5 is the top rung listed. The page, not this guide, says what each level involves.
Exemption from the Foundation Program: the two versions differ
The English page says students can be exempted from CCQ's Foundation Program under several listed conditions. One is an English proficiency test (IELTS or TOEFL) passed within the past two years, with the minimum required scores for course placement; this guide does not say which rung those minimums mean. Others are a 70% high-school result, a completed English Foundation Program at a recognised institution, and credit hours transferred from a recognised institution in Qatar. The Arabic-language page lists different conditions and does not mention IELTS or TOEFL, so the two versions do not match: ask CCQ which applies to you.
One figure per level: overall band or each skill?
The ladder lists one IELTS figure per level, and this guide cannot tell whether CCQ reads it against your overall band, each skill, or both. The difference can be large, because the overall band is the average of the four skills rounded to the nearest half band (a .25 remainder rounds up to the next half band, a .75 remainder to the next whole band). The invented numbers below show the arithmetic only.
| Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | Average | Overall band | Lowest skill |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4.5 | 5.0 | 4.0 | 5.5 | 4.75 | 5.0 (rounded up to the next whole band) | 4.0 |
| 5.5 | 5.0 | 5.0 | 5.5 | 5.25 | 5.5 (rounded up to the next half band) | 5.0 |
The band score calculator does this arithmetic for you.
QU and UDST: Foundation routes written as placement tests
Qatar University: the ACCUPLACER test
QU's Foundation Program page (Arabic version) says applicants to the colleges with Foundation Program requirements must complete the ACCUPLACER test, and that failing to take it prevents registering for Foundation classes. Its placement-test page (Arabic version) adds that new applicants to those colleges, except Medicine and Dental Medicine, take the ACCUPLACER ESL English test if they lack the minimum IELTS or TOEFL iBT scores. Whether IELTS spares you the test is for QU to say.
QU's other Foundation rules are set out, with its IELTS lines, on IELTS for QU undergraduate admission. In short: applicants who miss QU's minimum English and Mathematics competencies are considered for the Foundation Program (QU's pages say whom that covers), English and Math must be passed at 70% or higher, and international students complete it in 2 semesters.
UDST: an English placement score of at least 35
UDST's admission requirements page (Arabic version, same figure) says a Bachelor's or Diploma applicant below the direct-entry level may be considered for its Foundation program if their English placement test score is at least 35. It also says applicants with an English placement test score below 35 are not eligible for admission to UDST, the Foundation program included.
The 35 is a score on UDST's English placement test, not an IELTS band, and this page does not convert it into one. "May be considered" is not a promise of a place.
The same page separately says IELTS, TOEFL, SAT or ACT scores may be accepted instead of its placement tests. For English it lists IELTS Academic 5.0 overall with no band below 5.0, subject to the university's current minimum scores, validity periods and programme requirements. It does not say whether this covers the 35 Foundation line, so ask UDST; IELTS for UDST reports its IELTS lines in full.
This page does not describe either placement test's format or scoring, or how to prepare for it: Band Booster's lessons are IELTS and General English lessons.
Preparing from a lower starting band
These points are general teaching advice, not guidance from these institutions.
- Find your four skill scores, not only the overall band: a timed section of each skill shows where the gap is.
- If the gap is large, build basic grammar and vocabulary alongside exam practice. Our guide to IELTS for beginners and rusty English has a self-check and a first-month study plan.
- Practise Speaking aloud between lessons; the Speaking Part 2 timer helps.
Entry and placement rules are not visa rules
A visa or residence permit has its own rules, set by a different body, and meeting an institution's line does not mean meeting them. This page gives no visa or immigration advice; IELTS scores for study abroad explains the general difference.
Where Band Booster fits
Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutor. It is not ABP, CCQ, QU, UDST, a test centre or the exam board, and it does not register you for IELTS, set exam fees or dates, issue results or decide anything about admission or placement. Mike teaches every session himself, one-to-one and live in English on Google Meet. He holds the Cambridge CELTA, is based in Hanoi and scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS (see about Mike).
A session can cover Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking, with feedback during the session: Speaking runs in the real three-part format and Writing Task 1 and Task 2 are marked against the public band descriptors (see IELTS Speaking coaching and IELTS Writing feedback). Results students have reported back, anonymously, went from 6.0 to 7.5 overall, 5.5 to 7.0 in Writing and 6.5 to 8.0 in Speaking. No band is promised: progress depends on your starting point and the work between sessions.
Qatar is in the higher regional price tier. The booking page shows each time in your own time zone, and your price in your own currency with the payment options, before you pay. A paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on your first booking. There is no subscription, and you can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before the slot. The Doha page explains the time difference with Hanoi.
IELTS fees and dates
Band Booster IELTS does not register students or set exam fees, so this page quotes no exam fee and no test date. The test providers set them and they can change, so check the provider you book with; if your plans change after booking, see changing or cancelling an IELTS booking in Qatar. The institutions' own application dates and fees are on their pages. Questions worth asking any tutor are in the tutor-choice guide.
