Why Writing needs its own plan for UK routes
IELTS gives four skill scores and an overall band. UK regulators and universities often read the four separately, so a strong overall score can still fall short if one skill sits below a stated minimum. Feedback from someone who marks against the public band descriptors shows you what a marker would see in your own writing.
The scores some UK routes list
The figures below are what each official page said when it was read for this page. Rules change and courses differ, so open the linked page before you plan around a number.
| Route | What the page says about IELTS |
|---|---|
| NMC registration | IELTS Academic: at least 6.5 for Writing and at least 7 for Reading, Listening and Speaking (NMC) |
| Allied health (HCPC) | 7.0 with no element below 6.5; speech and language therapists 8.0 with no element below 7.5 (HCPC) |
| Imperial College London | Standard: 6.5 overall, minimum 6.0 in all elements. Higher: 7.0 overall, minimum 6.5 in all elements (Imperial) |
| LSE (postgraduate) | Academic: Writing 6.5 for the Standard and Higher categories, 7.0 for Research and Law (LSE) |
Three details from those pages are easy to miss:
- The NMC page names IELTS Academic, and says it does not accept IELTS Online or the One Skill Retake.
- Imperial says single score re-takes are not accepted. It also says scores must be taken within two years of the course start.
- LSE says IELTS General is not appropriate for academic use. If you are applying to study, check which version your course accepts.
This is general information from the named pages, not advice on your own case. Each body says where to check its current rule, and some programmes set higher or different scores. See also IELTS for NMC registration, IELTS for HCPC and IELTS at Imperial, LSE and Edinburgh.
IELTS for UKVI: Writing is typed
If you sit IELTS for UKVI, you type your answers. The IELTS site states that Writing on Paper is not available for test takers taking an IELTS for UKVI test, and its test-delivery news says the UKVI secure English test will only be available in the fully digital format. Check the IELTS site for the current position.
The NMC page adds that the UKVI version is the same as the standard Academic test in content, format, scoring and difficulty. What changes is the way you work:
- Type under the clock. A planned paragraph typed steadily beats a rushed draft.
- Count words on screen, not by line length on paper.
- Leave a few minutes at the end to reread for small slips, because typing causes different errors from handwriting.
For which test a given purpose accepts, see IELTS for UKVI or standard IELTS and computer-delivered IELTS in the UK.
What good Task 1 and Task 2 feedback looks like
Useful feedback does more than correct grammar. It tells you which part of the band descriptors is holding the score down and what to change next time.
- Task 1: did you select and report the key features, or list every number? Is the overview clear?
- Task 2: does every paragraph answer the question asked, with a position that stays the same from start to end?
- Coherence: do linking words follow the logic, or are they added for show?
- Language: which errors repeat, and which would you stop making first?
How lessons with Mike can help with this
Lessons are one-to-one, 60 minutes, live on Google Meet, in English. Mike, who holds a Cambridge CELTA (July 2017), has taught English and IELTS for 12+ years in Vietnam, Turkey and Iran, and has his own IELTS result of 8.5 in Speaking. He marks your Task 1 and Task 2 against the public band descriptors, explains the reasoning, and leaves written progress notes in your account so you can see what to fix between lessons.
Band Booster IELTS is a private tutor. It is not a test centre and not connected with the test providers, and it does not register you for an exam or set fees. The booking calendar shows each slot in your own time zone. The UK is 7 hours behind Hanoi in winter and 6 hours behind in summer, so check the slots on the calendar rather than assuming an evening time. You can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before a lesson. A paid 30-minute trial is available once, on a first booking, and there is no subscription or package. Details are on the booking page, and you can read more about Mike. Speaking has its own page: IELTS Speaking tutor for the UK.
