This page is about the exam, not a visa guide. It does not say which test or score your visa route needs: read the UK government's guidance for your route and the test provider's own pages. The facts here come from IDP's, ielts.org's and GOV.UK's pages as read in October 2026 and can change. It quotes no exam fee and no test date.
IELTS for UKVI and standard IELTS: what is the same and what is different
IDP's Singapore page on which test to take says IELTS and IELTS for UKVI are the same test in format, content, scoring and level of difficulty. The only difference it names is that the UKVI version is approved by the UK Home Office. The other points in the table come from IDP and ielts.org.
| Point | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Format, content, scoring, difficulty | The same as standard IELTS (IDP). |
| Approval | The UKVI version is approved by the UK Home Office (IDP). |
| Where it is taken | In person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre; UKVI accepts only tests taken that way (IDP). |
| Writing on Paper | Not available for IELTS for UKVI (ielts.org). |
| Versions this page covers | Academic for UKVI and General Training for UKVI. Life Skills is a separate test with its own page: IELTS Life Skills in Singapore. |
IDP says the two are the same test, so preparing for one is also preparing for the other. Listening and Speaking are the same in Academic and General Training, while Reading and Writing differ; IELTS Academic or General Training explains how. Which version an application needs is set by the guidance for the visa route, not by this page.
What the test contains
The four sections follow the standard IELTS format.
| Section | Time and format |
|---|---|
| Listening | About 30 minutes, 40 questions in 4 parts; the recording is played once. |
| Reading | 60 minutes, 40 questions in 3 sections. |
| Writing | 60 minutes. Task 1 is at least 150 words (about 20 minutes): a description of a chart, graph, table, diagram or process in Academic, a letter in General Training. Task 2 is an essay of at least 250 words (about 40 minutes) and counts twice as much as Task 1. |
| Speaking | 11 to 14 minutes in three parts: an introduction and familiar topics, a long turn on a cue card after one minute to prepare, and a discussion. |
Each skill is scored from 0 to 9 in half-band steps, and the overall band is the average of the four skills, rounded to the nearest half band. The IELTS band score calculator shows how skill scores combine.
Where the Singapore sources list IELTS for UKVI
Two Singapore listings show Academic and General Training for UKVI.
| Source | What it lists |
|---|---|
| IDP's centre page for One Raffles Place (named "IDP IELTS Test Centre - Singapore" there) | Academic for UKVI, General Training for UKVI, Life Skills A1 and Life Skills B1. |
| ielts.org's listing for British Council Singapore Limited, 30 Napier Road, Level 3 | UKVI Academic and UKVI General Training tests on computer, plus Life Skills A1 and B1. |
These are two listings, not a complete directory of Singapore centres, so check the provider's own booking page for the test type, centre and format before you book, and again on your confirmation. IELTS test centres in Singapore looks at the centres in more detail.
You book the test with the provider, not with Band Booster. This page quotes no exam fee or test date: the providers set both, and both change.
Computer, not paper
IDP's Singapore test dates page says that from 28 June 2026 the British Council and IDP no longer offer IELTS on Paper in Singapore, except for IELTS Life Skills, which continues on paper. IDP's UKVI page also says that from 28 June 2026 all IELTS tests are delivered on computer, with Life Skills staying on paper. Two ielts.org pages fit with that for UKVI: its British Council Singapore Limited listing shows the UKVI Academic and UKVI General Training tests as computer tests, and its Writing on Paper page says Writing on Paper is not available for test takers taking an IELTS for UKVI test.
Put together, the sources point to computer delivery for Academic and General Training for UKVI in Singapore, with Writing taken on the computer rather than on paper. The Writing point is this page's reading of ielts.org's statement, not a quote from a provider, so confirm the format when you book. Computer-delivered IELTS in Singapore covers the on-screen test, Speaking, results time and preparation tips for the standard tests.
General teaching advice, not provider guidance: since the sources point to computer delivery and no Writing on Paper, practise typing both Writing tasks in one 60-minute sitting.
In person only, and what to bring
IDP's UKVI page states that UKVI accepts only tests taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre. So check that the test you book is the "for UKVI" version and that the centre lists it.
On identity, GOV.UK's guidance on secure English language tests says your identity document must:
- be current and valid;
- be an original, not a photocopy;
- include a photo of you;
- match the information you gave when you booked the test.
That page also lists which documents are accepted. Read it, and your provider's test-day instructions, before you book, and check that the name and details on your booking match your document.
What scores do UK visa levels ask for? IDP's list
IDP's UKVI page sets out the IELTS for UKVI score by the CEFR level a visa requires, as a list:
- Visas that require CEFR level B1: at least 4.0 in all four components.
- Visas that require CEFR level B2: at least 5.5 in all four components.
- Visas that require CEFR level C1: at least 7.0 in all four components.
The four components are Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and IDP's wording asks for the score in all four, not only in the overall band. The Life Skills tests are a separate matter: IDP describes Life Skills B1 as Listening and Speaking, with a Pass result.
Three cautions:
- This is a visa minimum, not an admission score. Universities and courses set their own scores, which differ by institution and course and change. This page gives none; see IELTS scores for study abroad.
- Your route decides the level. Which CEFR level applies is set by the UK government's guidance for your visa route, and requirements change. This page cannot tell you which test or level you need.
- The list does not name a version. In the list as read in October 2026, IDP gives these scores for "IELTS for UKVI" without tying a level to Academic or General Training, so check your route's guidance for the version it names.
Validity, results timing and retakes
How long a result stays valid
GOV.UK says test results are valid for 2 years from the date the test is awarded. Whether a result of a given age suits your application depends on your route's own rules, so read them rather than relying on this page.
How long results take
The provider publishes how long results take for each test type. This page does not state a figure, so check the one for the test you book, treat it as a published range rather than a promise, and leave a margin before any deadline. Report forms and remarks are covered in IELTS results and remarks in Singapore.
Retaking
Ask the provider you book with whether a one-skill retake or another retake option is offered for the UKVI test, and on what conditions; this page does not state it. IELTS One Skill Retake or a full retake explains the general options, and the provider confirms whether they apply to a UKVI test.
Moving or cancelling a booking
The provider sets the rules and charges for moving or cancelling a test booking, so read the terms for the UKVI test you book. Rescheduling and cancelling IELTS in Singapore looks at how the providers handle it. Band Booster takes no test bookings and cannot change any.
Before you book: five things to confirm
- Which test and CEFR level your visa route requires, from the UK government's guidance for that route.
- That your booking is Academic for UKVI or General Training for UKVI, at a centre that lists it.
- The format on your confirmation: the sources above point to computer.
- That the name and details on your booking match your identity document.
- That the 2-year validity, the provider's published results time and its retake rules fit your application timeline.
How one-to-one lessons with Mike fit alongside the test
Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutoring service, not a test centre or the exam board. It does not register candidates, set exam fees or test dates, issue results or give visa or immigration advice, and a lesson is practice, not an IELTS for UKVI test. Mike teaches every session himself, live on Google Meet in English, from Hanoi. He holds the Cambridge CELTA (July 2017) and scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS (about Mike).
General teaching advice, not provider guidance: because IDP's scores apply to each of four components, a study plan can start with the component furthest from the score you need. A session can cover:
- Listening and Reading practice;
- Writing Task 1 and Task 2, marked against the public band descriptors (IELTS Writing feedback);
- Speaking Parts 1, 2 and 3 in the real test format (IELTS Speaking coaching).
Feedback comes during the session, sessions can be recorded on request, and written progress notes follow in your account. A regular session lasts 60 minutes, a paid 30-minute trial can be taken once on your first booking, and you can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before a session. There is no subscription or package. Singapore is in the higher regional price tier, and the booking page shows each time in your own time zone and your price in your own currency before you pay. No band is promised: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions. The online IELTS tutor page for Singapore explains how booking works.
