This page reports what UDST's own English-language pages say about IELTS, read in October 2026: the admissions requirements page and the Amiri Scholarship page. Requirements change between admission cycles, so open both pages for your own intake before you rely on a number. This page is about IELTS only: it quotes no exam fee, test date or application date, and gives no visa or immigration advice.
The short answer: three IELTS lines, three levels
The University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) does not have one IELTS score. Its pages give one line for Bachelor's and Diploma entry, one for Master's and one for the Amiri Scholarship, and each line sets a minimum for every skill as well as an overall score.
| Route | IELTS line on UDST's page | Validity | Also on the page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's and Diploma | IELTS Academic 5.0 overall, no band below 5.0 | The page mentions validity periods but gives no figure for IELTS on this route | May be accepted in place of the UDST English Placement Test, where approved. TOEFL iBT 49 overall with no section below 12 is another option. |
| Master's | IELTS Academic 6.0 overall, no band (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening) below 6.0 | Test Report Form valid within two years | Some programmes also need an interview, professional experience or a licence. |
| Amiri Scholarship | IELTS 7.0 overall, no individual band in Reading, Writing, Speaking or Listening below 6.5 | Valid for two years, counted from the original test date, and still valid at the scholarship application deadline | The English evidence can be SAT, IELTS or TOEFL. |
UDST's pages list other English evidence besides IELTS, so IELTS is one route among several, not the only one. This page reports the IELTS lines only.
Bachelor's and Diploma: IELTS in place of the English placement test
For Bachelor's and Diploma entry, UDST's admissions page says an IELTS Academic result of 5.0 overall, with no band below 5.0, may be accepted in place of the UDST English Placement Test, where approved. TOEFL iBT 49 overall, with no section below 12, is listed as another option, and the page lists further options too. Our reading, not UDST's wording: the line is a substitute for the placement test, not a statement that 5.0 is enough to be admitted.
UDST attaches a condition to these options. It says results may be accepted where approved, and subject to the University's current minimum scores, validity periods and programme-specific requirements. So 5.0 with no band below 5.0 is the line as published now, not a promise that it will apply to every programme and every intake.
The lines reported here give no validity period for this route, although the condition mentions validity periods. Ask UDST how old a result may be for your intake, and do not assume the Master's two-year rule applies here.
If your result is below the line, the route for applicants below direct entry is set out on IELTS below the direct-entry score in Qatar: bridge, foundation and placement routes, so this page does not repeat it. Qatar University's undergraduate rules are on their own page: each institution sets its own.
Master's: 6.0 overall, 6.0 in every skill, valid within two years
For Master's programmes, UDST's page asks for IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with no band in Reading, Writing, Speaking or Listening below 6.0. It adds that the Test Report Form must be valid within two years. The Test Report Form (TRF) is the document that carries your IELTS results; how results and copies work in Qatar is on IELTS results in Qatar. The line does not say which date the two years are counted from, so if your result is close to two years old, ask UDST how it counts before you apply.
Programme-specific extras
The page also says that some Master's programmes require an interview, professional experience or a professional licence. That differs programme by programme, so a result that meets the IELTS line is one part of an application, and your programme's own page decides what else you need. This page cannot tell you which programmes ask for which.
Other institutions in Qatar word their Master's rules differently, so do not carry a number across. See IELTS for Qatar University graduate admission and IELTS for Hamad Bin Khalifa University.
The Amiri Scholarship: a higher line with a deadline attached
UDST's Amiri Scholarship page lists IELTS 7.0 overall, with no individual band in Reading, Writing, Speaking or Listening below 6.5. Three points matter beyond the numbers.
- Validity has two parts. The result must be valid for two years, and the page also says the results must still be valid as of the scholarship application deadline. It adds that validity is counted from the original test date. On that wording, a result that would pass its two-year mark before the deadline would not meet the line.
- IELTS is one of three. The English evidence can be SAT, IELTS or TOEFL, so IELTS is a choice here, not a requirement.
- The version is not named. The Bachelor's, Diploma and Master's lines say IELTS Academic; the Amiri line says IELTS without naming a version. Ask UDST which version it takes. IELTS Academic or General Training explains how the two differ.
This page states no scholarship date. The deadline, who may apply and what the scholarship covers are on UDST's own page, so read the whole page and not only the English line.
Reading the numbers: the overall score and the minimum for each band
Each UDST line carries two conditions at once: an overall score and a minimum for every skill. The overall band is the average of the four skills, rounded to the nearest half band, and a good average can hide one weak skill.
Worked arithmetic with invented numbers, not anyone's real result.
| Listening / Reading / Writing / Speaking | Overall | Lowest band | What it means against UDST's lines |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.5 / 6.5 / 6.0 / 7.0 | 6.5 | 6.0 | Meets the Bachelor's and Diploma line and the Master's line. The overall is below the 7.0 of the Amiri line. |
| 7.0 / 7.5 / 6.5 / 7.0 | 7.0 | 6.5 | Meets all three lines. |
| 8.0 / 7.5 / 6.0 / 7.5 | 7.5 (average 7.25, rounded up) | 6.0 | Meets the Bachelor's and Diploma line and the Master's line. The overall is above 7.0, but Writing 6.0 is below the 6.5 minimum of the Amiri line. |
| 6.0 / 5.5 / 4.5 / 6.0 | 5.5 | 4.5 | The overall is above 5.0, but Writing 4.5 is below the 5.0 minimum, so it meets none of the three lines. |
The IELTS band score calculator shows how four skill scores average into an overall band. If one low skill is what stands between you and a line, ask UDST how it treats a single-skill retake before you book one; One Skill Retake or a full retake compares the two options in general terms.
Admission and scholarship lines are not visa rules
These numbers are what a university asks of applicants and what a scholarship asks of candidates. A visa or residence permit has its own rules, set by a different body, and meeting one does not mean meeting the other. This page gives no visa or immigration advice; IELTS scores for study abroad explains the general difference between a visa minimum and a university requirement.
A short checklist before you book the test
- Decide which line is yours: Bachelor's or Diploma entry, a Master's programme or the Amiri Scholarship.
- Open UDST's page for it and copy the IELTS line exactly, together with any programme-specific requirement.
- Check the version of the test: UDST names IELTS Academic for Bachelor's, Diploma and Master's entry; for the Amiri Scholarship, ask.
- Look at your lowest skill, not only your overall score.
- Check validity: two years for the Master's line; two years, counted from the original test date and still valid at the deadline, for the Amiri line; and ask UDST about the Bachelor's and Diploma route.
- For a Master's programme, read your programme's page for an interview, experience or licence.
- Book the test with the provider, not with Band Booster. Where you sit it is a separate, practical question: IELTS at the UDST Testing Centre in Doha covers that venue, and this page does not say that the venue changes how UDST reads a result.
Preparing for a minimum in every skill
Because UDST's lines name a minimum for every skill, Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking all matter, and the weakest one sets the limit. Writing is 60 minutes: Task 1 asks for at least 150 words and Task 2 for at least 250, and Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1 in the Writing band. Speaking is a live interview of 11 to 14 minutes in three parts.
Band Booster IELTS is a private tutoring service, not UDST, a test centre or the exam board, and it has no connection with UDST. Mike teaches every session himself, one-to-one and live in English on Google Meet. He holds the Cambridge CELTA, is based in Hanoi and scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS (see About Mike). Tell Mike which minimum you are working to, so that practice can follow your weakest skill. Speaking sessions run Parts 1, 2 and 3 in the real test format, and Writing Task 1 and Task 2 are marked against the public band descriptors, with feedback during the session; see IELTS Speaking coaching and IELTS Writing feedback.
The booking page shows each time in your own time zone, and your price in your own currency before you pay. Qatar is in the higher regional price tier, and the online IELTS tutor page for Doha explains the time difference with Hanoi. A paid 30-minute trial can be booked once, on a first booking. There is no subscription and no package, and you can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before the slot. Sessions can be recorded on request, and written progress notes appear in your account after each session.
Results students have reported back, anonymously, went from 6.0 to 7.5 overall, from 5.5 to 7.0 in Writing and from 6.5 to 8.0 in Speaking. No band is promised: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions. Questions worth asking any tutor are in the guide to choosing an online IELTS tutor.
IELTS fees and dates
Band Booster IELTS does not register students for IELTS or set exam fees, so this page quotes no exam fee and no test date. They are set by the test providers and can change: check the provider you book with. The same goes for UDST's own application and scholarship dates, which are on UDST's pages.
