What this page covers
Band Booster IELTS is a private coaching service, not the exam board. Registering for the actual IELTS test - and choosing the test date itself - is done with IDP Vietnam or British Council Vietnam, the two organisations that run IELTS in Vietnam. This page summarises what the test currently costs, how registration works in Hanoi, and how 1:1 coaching with Mike fits around a test date once you have booked one.
How much IELTS costs in Vietnam
IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are priced the same in Vietnam: 4,664,000 ₫, confirmed on IDP Vietnam's booking page on 12 October 2026. British Council Vietnam lists the same figure. Related IELTS products cost more or less, and fees are set by IDP and British Council, not by Band Booster IELTS, so check the current number on their own site before paying:
| Test | Fee (Vietnam) |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 4,664,000 ₫ |
| IELTS General Training | 4,664,000 ₫ |
| IELTS for UKVI | 5,252,000 ₫ |
| IELTS Life Skills | 4,414,000 ₫ |
| One Skill Retake (IELTS on computer, not UKVI) | 2,940,000 ₫ at IDP Vietnam (checked 12 October 2026; check British Council Vietnam for its own One Skill Retake price) |
| One Skill Retake (IELTS for UKVI) | 3,320,000 ₫ at IDP Vietnam |
These fees can change, and neither provider publishes a Hanoi-specific price - the fee is the same nationwide.
IELTS Academic and General Training in Vietnam are now computer-delivered
If you are picturing the old paper test, that is largely out of date. IDP and British Council jointly announced that after 29 March 2025 IELTS Academic and General Training in Vietnam would be delivered on computer, and since then those tests have been delivered on computer, apart from the limited paper cases and the Writing on Paper option described below.
Both IDP and British Council say IELTS on Paper is available in only two cases: for test takers who need Special Arrangements, and in very limited cases at partner educational institutions (universities, schools, academies and English language centres affiliated with them). Neither lists which institutions, so ask IDP or British Council whether either case applies to you.
There is also IELTS on computer with Writing on Paper: Listening and Reading are on computer and only your Writing answers are handwritten on an answer sheet. IDP lists it at selected centres including one in Hanoi, and says it is not available for IELTS for UKVI.
For the full explanation, see Computer-delivered IELTS in Hanoi: what changes.
Registering for a test date in Hanoi
Register online on IDP Vietnam's or British Council Vietnam's own booking system. Both also accept registrations through their authorised partners, and IDP also takes registrations at its own offices. You do not register through Band Booster IELTS. Details for each provider:
- IDP Vietnam - register and pick a Hanoi test date at ielts.idp.com. IDP lists several Hanoi test venues, including 15-17 Ngoc Khanh (Ba Dinh) and 28 Phan Boi Chau (Hoan Kiem), and venues at partner organisations. Choose a venue and date on IDP's booking system and check the time and venue in the confirmation IDP sends you.
- British Council Vietnam - register at britishcouncil.vn. British Council also runs a Hanoi test centre; confirm the current address and available dates directly with British Council before making travel or scheduling plans around it.
The two organisations run separate calendars of test dates, so it is worth checking both if your preferred date is full with one provider.
How far in advance should you register?
Both providers allow late booking on computer: IDP says you can register one day before the test day, and British Council says you can book as late as one day before registration closes, in each case depending on location and date. Treat that as a last resort, not a plan.
IDP's own FAQ says date changes are free if requested 15 or more days before the test and cost 1,100,000 ₫ if requested 4-14 days before; candidates who register within 3 days of the test date cannot change the date. Only one date change is allowed, the new date must be within 3 months of the original, and a candidate who has changed the date cannot cancel. To cancel, IDP Vietnam requires a written request submitted at least 15 days before the test date. 75% of the test fee is refunded (you need the original VAT invoice), and the refund arrives about 6 weeks after you submit the request.
These are IDP Vietnam's terms for standard IELTS (Academic and General Training); IELTS for UKVI has different terms. British Council Vietnam's terms for standard IELTS are: free transfer 15 or more days before the test, a 25% administrative fee for transfers 5-14 days before, no transfers under 5 days; cancellations 15 or more days before get a 75% refund, and none within 14 days. Check the provider's current policy before you book.
Fitting 1:1 coaching around your test date
Once your test date is confirmed with IDP or British Council, coaching with Mike can be scheduled around it rather than the other way round. If you have several weeks, regular sessions spread out over that time - see online IELTS tutor for how ongoing 1:1 sessions work - let you work through Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking at a normal pace. If your test date is close and you need to focus fast, intensive IELTS prep in Hanoi covers booking several sessions in the same week instead of waiting through a longer plan.
If you have not registered for a test date yet and want a sense of where you are starting from first, the IELTS band score calculator is a quick way to estimate a band before you commit to a date and pay the exam fee.
