Band Booster IELTS does not register students for the test, set exam fees or choose test dates. This guide sets out what IDP Hong Kong and British Council Hong Kong say on their own pages about IELTS Online, and what HKU and CUHK say on their admissions pages about accepting it. The pages were read on 24 October 2026. Rules change, so read the current page of the organisation you deal with before you book: this guide cannot tell you whether a place is open on a given date. It quotes no exam fee or test date.

Who can take IELTS Online: Academic only, aged 18 or over
IDP Hong Kong's IELTS Online page (mostly in Chinese, with English answers in its FAQ) says that IELTS Online currently offers IELTS Academic only. If the university, employer or body asking for your score wants General Training, IELTS Online is not the format to plan around. The difference between the two tests is explained in Academic or General Training.
The same page says IELTS Online is currently open to candidates aged 18 or over. A candidate under 18 is outside the group that page describes, so ask the provider before assuming IELTS Online is an option. What the providers say about booking when you are under 18 is covered in booking IELTS in Hong Kong.
The residency rule: the country where you book and sit the test
An English FAQ answer on the same IDP Hong Kong page says that to take IELTS Online you must be a resident of the country where you are booking and sitting the test, and that you must also be physically present in that country on test day.
This guide does not interpret how the rule applies to a particular passport, visa or residency status. If you live in Hong Kong but expect to be somewhere else on test day, or you are not sure that your status counts as residency, ask the provider before you book.
Booking cut-offs: 48 hours or four days ahead
The same FAQ gives two different cut-offs, depending on who you are. They are shown here in IDP's own terms.
| IDP's description of the candidate | What IDP's page says |
|---|---|
| A national of the country where you are taking the test | You can book up to 48 hours before your test time. |
| Not a national | You must provide proof of residency, and you need to book at least four days in advance to allow time for residency verification. |
This guide does not interpret those lines. In particular it does not say which row applies if you are a Hong Kong permanent resident, hold a visa or have another status, and it does not list the documents IDP accepts as proof of residency, which IDP's FAQ names. Ask the provider you book with, and ask whether it applies the same rule as IDP's page. Neither number shows that a place is open on a given day. The 48 hours here is the figure on IDP's IELTS Online page; what the providers say about booking time limits in general is in the booking guide.
Equipment and check-in: what IDP's page lists
IDP Hong Kong's IELTS Online page lists the following (paraphrased here):
- A desktop or laptop computer. IELTS Online cannot be taken on a phone or tablet.
- Full administrator rights on that computer.
- Speakers. Headphones are prohibited during the test.
- A microphone, switched on throughout the test.
- A camera, switched on throughout the test.
- One screen only.
- At check-in on test day, a phone with a camera, used for the room check.
- Your valid passport, used at check-in.
Two cautions apply. First, this is a landing page, not necessarily the current specification. It also carries software and system details that this guide does not copy because they may be out of date, and the two providers do not name the test software in the same way. Read the current IELTS Online information from the provider you book with: start from the British Council Hong Kong IELTS Online page or from IDP Hong Kong's site. Second, check that you have full administrator rights on the computer you plan to use, which IDP's page lists, and if you normally work with two monitors, ask the provider what it requires.
The passport at check-in
IDP's list names a valid passport, used at check-in, and does not mention an HKID. The ID rules that British Council Hong Kong and IDP Hong Kong state for their other bookings are in the booking guide, but they should not be assumed to carry over to IELTS Online: ask the provider which ID it will accept at check-in, and check that your passport is valid on test day.
Results: 6 to 8 calendar days
British Council Hong Kong's IELTS Online page says you will receive your results between 6 and 8 calendar days after taking your test. The providers publish a shorter timescale for the computer-delivered test (see computer-delivered IELTS in Hong Kong). If a university or employer deadline matters, leave a margin and check the provider's current page when you book.
Where IELTS Online is not accepted
Immigration
IDP Hong Kong's page says IELTS Online currently covers IELTS Academic only and is not suitable for immigration-related English requirements. British Council Hong Kong's IELTS Online page says that IELTS Online is not accepted by immigration authorities. If an immigration route asks for an English test, read that route's own page to see which test it names. For general information about the separate IELTS for UKVI tests, see IELTS for UKVI and Life Skills in Hong Kong. This page gives no visa or immigration advice.
Hong Kong universities: HKU and CUHK
Two Hong Kong universities say on their own pages that they do not accept IELTS Online:
| University | What its page says |
|---|---|
| HKU, English language requirement page for international qualifications | Neither the IELTS Indicator (home edition) nor IELTS Online is accepted to meet the English language requirement. |
| CUHK, international requirements page | It will not accept results from IELTS One Skill Retake, the IELTS Indicator or IELTS Online to meet the university's English language requirement. |
These pages concern each university's English language requirement for admission, in the routes the pages describe. They are two examples, not a list: other Hong Kong universities, other programmes and universities abroad publish their own rules, and this guide has not read them. A university's rule can change, so read the page for your programme before you book. For the IELTS scores that HKU, CUHK and HKUST publish, see IELTS scores for Hong Kong universities.
Questions to ask before you book IELTS Online
- Who is asking for your score, and does that organisation's own page accept IELTS Online by name?
- Do you need Academic, and are you 18 or over?
- Where will you be on test day, and does that fit the residency rule?
- Which booking cut-off applies to you, and what counts as proof of residency?
- Does your computer meet the provider's current requirements?
- Will your passport be valid on test day, and will the provider accept the ID you plan to use?
- Do 6 to 8 calendar days for results fit your deadline?
IELTS Online and the other formats
This guide covers IELTS Online only. For computer-delivered IELTS in Hong Kong, including where it is taken and how Speaking is delivered, see computer-delivered IELTS in Hong Kong. CUHK's page also names One Skill Retake results among those it will not accept; the retake format is explained in IELTS One Skill Retake or full retake.
Where lessons with Mike fit
Band Booster IELTS is a private tutoring service, not a test centre. It does not register candidates, set exam fees or provide exam software, so you book IELTS Online with a test provider, not with Band Booster. Mike, a Cambridge CELTA-certified teacher based in Hanoi, teaches every session himself, one-to-one, live on Google Meet and in English only. His own IELTS Speaking result is 8.5 (about Mike).
Sessions cover Listening, Reading, Writing (Task 1 and Task 2, marked against the public band descriptors) and Speaking in the real three-part format, with feedback during the session rather than days later. See Speaking coaching for Hong Kong and Writing feedback. For the screens, rules and tools of IELTS Online itself, use the provider's own materials. No band is promised: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions.
The booking page shows each time in your own time zone and your price in your own currency before you pay. Hong Kong is one hour ahead of Hanoi all year (the sources are on the online IELTS tutor for Hong Kong page). You can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before a slot; a cancellation inside 12 hours is not refunded. A paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on your first booking.
