This page is general information about English tests, not visa or immigration advice. It cannot say which test, level or route applies to you: that depends on your circumstances and on the UK government's current rules, which change, so read GOV.UK's page for your route. It draws on GOV.UK, British Council Hong Kong, IDP Hong Kong and ielts.org pages read on 24 October 2026, and quotes no exam fee and no test date.
IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills: what the sources say
UKVI stands for UK Visas and Immigration, as British Council Hong Kong's results page spells it. The two providers name the speaking-and-listening test differently. IDP Hong Kong's page on it is in Chinese and calls it 「IELTS 生活技能考試」, which British Council Hong Kong's Chinese results page prints as "IELTS 生活技能考試 (IELTS Life Skills)", while British Council Hong Kong's English pages write "IELTS for UKVI Life Skills". This page follows each source's own name.
| Point | IELTS for UKVI | IELTS Life Skills |
|---|---|---|
| Skills assessed | Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, as the study and Skilled Worker rows below print them. | Listening and Speaking only (IDP Hong Kong). |
| How the result is given | A minimum score in each component, as the rows below print it. | Pass or fail, with no band score (IDP Hong Kong). |
| Results time (British Council Hong Kong) | 1 to 5 days. | Up to 9 days. |
British Council Hong Kong's own pages are not consistent about which Life Skills levels are offered (some list A1 and B1, others A1, A2 and B1), so this page lists none; it names B1 only because the BN(O) settlement row below does.
BN(O) settlement: what GOV.UK and British Council Hong Kong say
GOV.UK's page on settling in the UK as a BN(O) visa holder says you can apply for settlement if you have a BN(O) visa and have spent 5 continuous years in the UK. People aged 18 to 64 usually need to book and pass the Life in the UK Test and meet the English language requirement by having either:
- an English qualification with at least level B1 in speaking and listening; or
- a degree taught or researched in English.
GOV.UK adds that in some circumstances you do not have to take the Life in the UK Test or meet the English language requirement, and that applicants under 18 do not need the 5 continuous years in the UK.
British Council Hong Kong's UK visas and immigration page turns the requirements into a table by route. For the Hong Kong British Nationals (Overseas) visa it prints:
| Item | As the table prints it |
|---|---|
| Minimum CEFR level required | B1 (for settlement only) |
| Components | Listening and Speaking |
| Test and minimum scores required | IELTS for UKVI Life Skills B1 – Pass |
The British Council says the table is collated from the government website, so check GOV.UK for the current rule rather than relying on a copy. Four points on reading it:
- Settlement only. The row is marked for settlement only; this page makes no claim about the BN(O) visa application itself.
- One test named, not necessarily the only route. GOV.UK's wording on its settlement page is "an English qualification" at level B1 or a degree, so this page does not say the named test is the only way to meet the requirement.
- Pass or fail. IDP Hong Kong's page on the test (in Chinese) says its results are shown as pass or fail, with no band score, so the IELTS band score calculator does not apply.
- Your own case. Whether the age range, the five-year period, the degree option or an exemption applies to you is a question for GOV.UK or a qualified adviser, not this page.
Other UK routes in British Council Hong Kong's table
The same table covers other routes. These are the British Council's figures, collated from GOV.UK, not Band Booster's, and each route's own GOV.UK page decides what applies.
| Route (as printed) | Level | Components | Test and score as printed |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK study: degree level or above | Equivalent to B2 | Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking | IELTS or IELTS for UKVI: a minimum of 5.5 in each of the four components |
| Graduate visa | – | – | "No requirements" is printed |
| Skilled Worker visa | B2 | Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking | IELTS for UKVI: a minimum score of 5.5 in each of the four components |
The Skilled Worker row also lists a lower B1 level, but only for people who were already on the route before a cut-off date printed in the table and are only extending their existing permission to stay. Three cautions:
- Each component. The 5.5 applies to each of the four components, so an overall band alone does not show whether every component meets it.
- The test names differ. The study row prints "IELTS or IELTS for UKVI" and the Skilled Worker row prints "IELTS for UKVI". Check which your route names.
- A visa minimum is not an admission score. Universities and courses set their own scores, which differ and change; see IELTS scores for study abroad.
Conditions on the test: GOV.UK and the British Council
GOV.UK's secure-test guidance
GOV.UK's general guidance on secure English language tests (not a page about BN(O) settlement) says that for your results to be accepted, the test must:
- be on the list of approved English language tests;
- have been sat at an approved test location; and
- have been awarded in the two years before the date of your application.
The two years run back from your application date. Whether this guidance applies to your route is for GOV.UK's page for that route to say.
In person, and on computer rather than paper (British Council Hong Kong)
British Council Hong Kong says UKVI will only accept tests taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre, as UKVI requires an additional layer of security when taking language tests. It also says the IELTS test partners no longer offer IELTS for UKVI on paper in Hong Kong, and that test takers can still take IELTS for UKVI on computer there. Computer-delivered IELTS in Hong Kong is written for the standard tests, so check the UKVI version with the provider.
Life Skills by video call at some centres
British Council Hong Kong also says that some of its IELTS for UKVI test centres are delivering the IELTS for UKVI Life Skills test via video calls, and that you take the video-call test at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre, exactly the same as the in-person test in content, scoring, timing, question format and security arrangements. Which delivery your own booking uses, and where, is for the provider to confirm, so ask before you pay.
IELTS Online is a different test
IDP Hong Kong's IELTS Online page says that test is not suitable for immigration-related English requirements, and British Council Hong Kong's page says it is not accepted by immigration authorities. See IELTS Online in Hong Kong.
Where in Hong Kong, and what to have ready
This page cannot give a complete list of the Hong Kong venues that sit IELTS for UKVI or Life Skills. Two points are available:
- ielts.org's finder. On ielts.org's Hong Kong test-centre finder, as read on 24 October 2026, the "UKVI Approved" tag appears on two of the three British Council Admiralty cards and on no other Hong Kong card. That is what the finder showed that day, not a statement that no other venue can sit a UKVI test. Addresses and other venues are in IELTS test centres in Hong Kong.
- IDP Hong Kong. IDP Hong Kong's registration page (in Chinese) has a separate set of steps for booking the computer-delivered IELTS test (UKVI), but it does not name the venues. Those steps ask you to choose the test location in the booking system and later to enter your passport number and upload a passport photo showing the number in its top right corner. Confirm the venue and test type with IDP before you pay.
ID rules for every booking are in Booking IELTS in Hong Kong.
How long results take
British Council Hong Kong's results page gives IELTS for UKVI as 1 to 5 days and IELTS for UKVI Life Skills as up to 9 days; the Chinese version gives the same Life Skills limit. These are published ranges, not promises, so leave a margin before any application deadline, and if you book with IDP, look up IDP's own timing. IELTS results in Hong Kong covers online results, report forms, extra copies and re-marks for the standard tests.
Before you book: four things to confirm
- Your route, and what GOV.UK says it needs: the test, the level, the skills, any alternative such as a degree, and whether its secure-test rules apply.
- That your booking is the "for UKVI" version of the test your route names, as the provider writes it, at a venue that lists it. The sources read do not say whether a route needs the Academic or the General Training version; see IELTS Academic or General Training and check your route's GOV.UK page.
- How the test will be delivered: in person at a centre, and for Life Skills whether it is the video-call version, which British Council Hong Kong says is also taken at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre. Ask the provider in writing if you can.
- That you have your passport to hand, as IDP Hong Kong's UKVI registration steps ask for it, and that the results time leaves a margin before your deadline.
How one-to-one lessons with Mike fit alongside the test
Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutoring service, not a test centre or the exam board. It does not register candidates, set test fees or dates, issue results or give visa or immigration advice, and a lesson is practice, not an IELTS for UKVI or Life Skills test. This page does not claim that a lesson prepares anyone for Life Skills or the UKVI version. Book the test with a test provider, not with Band Booster.
Mike teaches every session himself, live on Google Meet in English, from Hanoi. He holds the Cambridge CELTA (July 2017) and scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS (about Mike). A session can cover Listening, Reading, Writing (Task 1 and Task 2, marked against the public band descriptors) or Speaking (Parts 1, 2 and 3 in the real test format), with feedback during the session. See IELTS Speaking coaching, IELTS Listening coaching and one-to-one IELTS tutoring in Hong Kong.
A regular session lasts 60 minutes, a paid 30-minute trial can be taken once on your first booking, and you can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before. There is no subscription or package. The booking page shows your price in your own currency before you pay. No band, pass or visa outcome is promised.
