This page reports what RCSI Bahrain's medicine and undergraduate nursing entry-requirements pages and its admissions FAQs say, plus the British Council's Bahrain page on Aptis, all read in October 2026. Requirements change and differ by route, so read RCSI's own pages for yours. This page quotes no exam fee, application fee, deadline, start date or test date, and gives no admission advice.
What RCSI Bahrain's pages say about English, at a glance
| Programme and route | The English line on the page | Where it is |
|---|---|---|
| Medicine, A-Level route | GCSE English alternatives, IELTS Academic at 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each band, or TOEFL iBT | Medicine entry requirements |
| Medicine, Tawjihiya (Secondary School Leaving Certificate) route, listed for the 6-year Foundation programme | IELTS Academic at 6.5 overall (at least 6.0 in each band), or TOEFL iBT | Same page |
| Medicine, American High School Diploma and Indian CBSE/ISCE routes | IELTS Academic at 6.5 overall (at least 6.0 in each band), or TOEFL iBT | Same page |
| Nursing | Following interview, every accepted applicant sits the Aptis test, with no exemptions; the target is B1 or above with no single component below A2 | Nursing entry requirements |
The table is a summary, not RCSI's rule.
Medicine: the IELTS line, route by route
RCSI Bahrain's medicine page sets out English-language requirements for each qualification route. In the three route groups this guide reports, the IELTS line is the same: IELTS Academic, a minimum of 6.5 overall, and a minimum of 6.0 in each band.
- A-Level route. GCSE English alternatives, the IELTS Academic line above, or TOEFL iBT. This guide does not list the GCSE alternatives or the TOEFL iBT scores, so read them on the page if you hold A-Levels.
- Tawjihiya route. Listed for the 6-year Foundation programme, and this guide reports it for that programme only: IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT.
- American High School Diploma and Indian CBSE/ISCE routes. IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT. The page gives its own TOEFL iBT scores, which this guide does not repeat.
The page may list further routes or alternatives. If your qualification is not named here, read the page itself. The page also says the English requirement is set for applicants whose first language is not English or who have not been educated solely in a native English speaking country, and it lists some curricula and grades that meet it, so read that section before you book a test.
Beyond the score: version, format and age of the result
- Academic is the version named. General Training is a different test (its Writing Task 1 is a letter, not a description of a chart or diagram), so it is not the one these lines name. See IELTS Academic or General Training.
- Delivery format. Ask RCSI whether it accepts IELTS Online or another way of sitting the test before you book. See IELTS Online at home in Bahrain.
- How recent the result must be. RCSI's medicine page says that English language qualifications are only valid for two years from the date of the test, so check the date of your result against that line on the page.
A minimum is not an offer
RCSI's medicine page says that meeting the minimum academic entry requirements does not guarantee an offer for the programme. It says applications will be assessed on these criteria:
- academic performance and English language;
- relevant experience in a healthcare setting (up to 3 examples);
- extracurricular activities, relevant work or voluntary experience;
- performance at a structured interview.
The page also describes a holistic review of the entire application; this guide does not say how the points are weighted or scored. English language sits in the first criterion beside academic performance.
A Casper test is also part of the medicine application. RCSI's page describes Casper as an open-response situational judgement test that focuses on social intelligence rather than scientific knowledge. It is a separate test from IELTS, and this guide does not describe its format, timing or cost.
Treat every figure on this page as a floor set by RCSI, not a promise. Reaching it does not mean an offer, and this page cannot tell you which line applies to you.
Overall band or each band? The arithmetic
The medicine line sets two conditions at once: 6.5 overall, and at least 6.0 in each band. The overall band is the average of the four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking), rounded to the nearest half band, with an average ending in .25 rounded up to the next half band and one ending in .75 rounded up to the next whole band. The scores below are made up to show the arithmetic; they are not anyone's results.
| Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | Average | Overall band | Meets both conditions? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6.0 | 6.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 6.50 | 6.5 | Yes |
| 6.5 | 6.5 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.25 | 6.5 | Yes |
| 7.0 | 7.0 | 5.5 | 6.5 | 6.50 | 6.5 | No: Writing is below 6.0 |
| 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.00 | 6.0 | No: the overall band is below 6.5 |
The third row shows why the second condition matters: a strong overall band does not cover one weak skill. In the fourth, every band reaches 6.0 and the overall band still falls short. The IELTS band score calculator does the averaging.
Nursing: Aptis rather than an IELTS score
RCSI Bahrain's undergraduate nursing entry-requirements page says that, following interview, all accepted applicants are required to complete an English language examination, Aptis, with no exemptions. It sets the target as B1 level or above, with no single component less than A2 in the Aptis test.
How to read that line
- It names Aptis, not IELTS. This guide reports no IELTS score for nursing, so do not carry the medicine figures over.
- B1 and A2 are not IELTS bands. They are the levels the page uses for the Aptis target. This guide does not convert between the two, because RCSI's page does not.
- There are no exemptions. The page says so.
- The step comes after the interview and applies to every accepted applicant. This guide does not say when or where the sitting happens, how it is booked, what it costs or what follows if the target is not met; ask RCSI.
- Components are not listed here. This guide does not list the Aptis components or format; the British Council has separate Aptis pages for that.
About Aptis
Aptis is a British Council test. The British Council's Bahrain page presents it as an English test for organisations and says it was developed by British Council experts in language testing: see British Council Bahrain, Aptis.
Aptis is not among Band Booster's sessions (IELTS and General English), so this page does not say a session prepares you for it.
English support at RCSI Bahrain
RCSI Bahrain's admissions FAQs say it does not offer English language courses, although the Centre for Student Success and the Language and Cultural Unit can offer support. A course to build your English before you apply would therefore come from elsewhere. This guide does not describe what the support units do or whether they affect an entry requirement; ask RCSI.
Checking your own case, step by step
- Medicine applicants: find your qualification route on RCSI's medicine entry-requirements page and read its English line, including any alternative to IELTS such as GCSE English or TOEFL iBT. Nursing applicants: read the nursing page, where the English step is Aptis after interview.
- Ask RCSI what is left open and keep the reply: which IELTS version counts, whether other ways of sitting the test are accepted, and, if you are considering a One Skill Retake for one weak band, whether RCSI accepts that result. One Skill Retake or a full retake compares the options.
- Allow time for results before any date RCSI gives you. IELTS results in Bahrain sets out what the providers say about timing.
- Book IELTS with a provider you choose; Band Booster does not register students. Booking IELTS in Bahrain and test day covers ID and the day itself, and the Manama page lists what IDP, the British Council and ielts.org show for venues.
Preparing for a 6.5 with 6.0 in each band
This is general study advice from Band Booster IELTS, not RCSI's, and it promises no band. Listening takes 30 minutes with 40 questions, each recording played once. Reading takes 60 minutes with 40 questions. Writing takes 60 minutes: Task 1 asks for at least 150 words, Task 2 for at least 250, and Task 2 counts twice as much. Speaking is an interview of 11 to 14 minutes in three parts.
- Find your weakest band first. RCSI's line sets a floor for every band, so take a timed practice paper in each skill and compare the results.
- Write both Writing tasks in one 60-minute sitting. In a session, Writing is marked against the public band descriptors; see IELTS Writing feedback.
- Say your Speaking answers aloud against the clock. Run Parts 1, 2 and 3 as in the real format; the Speaking Part 2 timer helps with the long turn, and IELTS Speaking coaching shows how a session works.
Where Band Booster fits
Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutor. It is not RCSI Bahrain or a test centre, and it has no link with RCSI, the British Council, IDP or any other provider: it does not register you for IELTS or Aptis, set exam fees or dates, issue results, or decide anything about admission. Mike teaches every session himself, one-to-one and live in English on Google Meet. He holds the Cambridge CELTA, is based in Hanoi and scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS (see about Mike).
Sessions cover IELTS Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, with feedback in the moment, and General English. They are not Casper or RCSI interview preparation, and no band, test result or offer is guaranteed.
Bahrain is in the higher regional price tier. The booking page shows each time in your own time zone, and your price in your own currency with the payment options, before you pay. A regular session lasts 60 minutes, and a paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on your first booking. You can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before a session, and there is no subscription or package.
Other institutions in Bahrain
This page covers RCSI Bahrain only. For the wider picture see IELTS scores asked by Bahrain universities, the University of Bahrain and Bahrain Polytechnic. IELTS scores for study abroad separates visa minimums from university requirements.
IELTS fees and dates
Band Booster does not register students for IELTS, so this page quotes no exam fee and no test date. The test providers set them and they can change, so check the provider you book with. Read any RCSI application fee, deadline or start date on RCSI's own pages.
