UCD's published standard for IELTS Academic is an average of 6.5 over all components with at least 6.0 in each band, from one sitting, with results normally issued within the last two years. UCD's page also says retake scores are not accepted, without defining the term. Some graduate courses ask for more, so check your school.

Price: EUR 51.53 for a 60-minute one-to-one lesson; EUR 12.02 for the paid 30-minute trial. Amounts use the same price tiers as the booking page, in your local currency at exchange rates set on 6 October 2026. The booking page shows the exact amount before you pay, and PayPal charges the US-dollar equivalent (USD 57.76 for a 60-minute lesson).

You can also choose a 2-hour lesson on the booking page; the price is shown there before you pay.

University College Dublin sets one English language standard for every applicant, and for IELTS Academic it is a 6.5 average with at least 6.0 in each band. This page walks through UCD's own wording, including the two-year window, the single-sitting rule and the line on retake scores. Mike teaches IELTS one-to-one on Google Meet, in English.

The score UCD asks for

UCD publishes its Minimum English Language Requirements as one page that applies to all applicants and all levels of study. For IELTS Academic it reads: an average score of 6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band.

ItemWhat the UCD page says
IELTS AcademicAverage 6.5 over all components, minimum 6.0 in each band
CurrencyResults normally issued within the last two years (stated for all proficiency tests)
SittingsSingle sitting only
RetakesRetake scores are not accepted (term not defined on the page)
Graduate coursesRequirements may be higher for some courses

In practice this means a 6.5 overall is not enough on its own: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking must each reach 6.0 as well. A 7.0 overall with a 5.5 in Writing would not meet the stated minimum.

How recent the result must be

UCD says that for all proficiency tests, results must normally have been issued within the last two years. Its own example: for entry in September 2027, results must have been attained since 1 February 2025. The word “normally” is UCD's, so ask the admissions contact if your date is close to the edge.

The single-sitting rule

UCD assesses applicants on a single sitting only. The page explains that the minimum for every component must be met at the same time as the overall score. You cannot combine a good Speaking score from one test with a good Writing score from another.

Retakes and “ucd ielts one skill retake”

Under the IELTS row UCD writes that retake scores are not accepted. The page does not define the term and does not mention IELTS One Skill Retake, where a candidate retakes one component of a full computer-based test. Our reading, which is not UCD's wording, is that a result built from a retake may not be what the single-sitting rule has in mind. Before paying for a retake, ask UCD in writing. Our own page on One Skill Retake in Ireland covers how the retake works, and the IDP page says to check each organisation's own eligibility rules.

Graduate applicants

The table is described as the minimum for graduate taught and graduate research degrees, and the page adds that for some graduate courses the requirement may be higher. It also says other evidence can be considered at the discretion of the relevant Governance Board, for example a degree taken through English or in an English-speaking country. Contact the school you are applying to. For a master's, the school's own course page is the place to look for a higher figure; this page does not state one.

If your score is short: UCD's pathway

UCD also lists its own English language pathway programmes in the same table. The page gives:

  • UCD Pre-Sessional Programmes: overall grade C+ with at least grade C- in all components.
  • UCD Pre-Masters Programmes: overall grade C+ with at least grade C- in all components.

These are UCD grades, not IELTS bands. The page points to the Centre for English and Global Languages for details; whether a pathway fits your programme is a question for UCD.

Other applicants and other tests

  • Applicants with the Irish school leaving certificate need H7/O6 in English.
  • Applicants with other examinations taught through English need the equivalent UCD specifies.
  • UCD also lists other recognised tests, including TOEFL, Cambridge examinations and the Duolingo English Test, each with its own scores. Read the table for those.
  • An interview may be required in addition, at the Programme Board's discretion.

For questions, UCD names UCD Admissions for EU undergraduate applicants, the school for EU graduate applicants, and UCD Global for non-EU applicants.

Booking the test with the dates in mind

Because of the two-year window and the single-sitting rule, the date of the one test you take matters. Test dates and fees are set by the providers, so check the provider pages listed on dates and fees in Ireland and the wider comparison of Irish universities. This page is general information from UCD's page, not admissions advice; the current rule is the one on UCD's website.

How lessons with Mike can help with this

If you need a 6.0 in every band, the weakest skill decides the result. In a one-to-one lesson Mike marks Writing Task 1 and Task 2 against the public band descriptors, runs Speaking Parts 1 to 3 in the real format with feedback in the moment, and works through Listening and Reading. Lessons are 60 minutes, live on Google Meet, in English, and Mike's own IELTS result is 8.5 in Speaking. Progress notes are left in your account. See about Mike, or book a lesson. Mike does not register candidates or set fees.

Common questions

What IELTS score does UCD require?

For IELTS Academic, UCD's page asks for an average of 6.5 over all components and at least 6.0 in each band. Some graduate courses may ask for more, so check the school you are applying to.

Does UCD accept an IELTS One Skill Retake?

UCD's page says retake scores are not accepted. It does not define the term or mention One Skill Retake, so confirm with UCD in writing before booking a retake.

How old can my IELTS result be?

UCD says results must normally have been issued within the last two years. For September 2027 entry its page gives 1 February 2025 as the earliest date.

Can I combine scores from two IELTS tests?

No. UCD assesses a single sitting only, so every component minimum and the overall score must come from the same sitting.

What can I do if my IELTS score is just below the requirement?

UCD lists its Pre-Sessional and Pre-Masters programmes in its table, at overall grade C+ with at least C- in each component. Ask UCD whether one suits your programme.

Do master's applicants need a higher score?

The table is the minimum for graduate degrees, and UCD says some graduate courses require more. Look at your course page or ask the school.

Can Mike promise a UCD-ready score?

No. Mike teaches the four skills one-to-one, but no score can be promised. Your result depends on your own work and on the test.
