This page reports two UCC pages, both read on 31 October 2026: the undergraduate English language requirements (marked updated 17 February 2026) and the postgraduate English language requirements (marked updated 13 October 2026). Rules change by intake and course, so confirm yours with UCC. This page gives no exam fee or test date and is not admissions or visa advice.
Undergraduate: scores by college
The undergraduate page lists IELTS minimums by group of programmes. It asks for a minimum overall score of 6.5 and a minimum of 6.0 in each band for most colleges.
| Programmes | Overall | Each band |
|---|---|---|
| College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences | 6.5 | 6.0 |
| College of Business and Law | 6.5 | 6.0 |
| College of Science, Engineering and Food Science | 6.5 | 6.0 |
| College of Medicine and Health (Speech and Language Therapy is listed separately) | 6.5 | 6.5 |
| Speech and Language Therapy | 7.0 | 6.5 |
UCC's page does not define "band"; in IELTS, each band is one of the four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. An overall 6.5 is an average, so one weaker skill can leave you below a per-band minimum even when the overall looks right. The band score calculator shows how the four skills combine.
Postgraduate: the general minimum
For most postgraduate programmes the page states 6.5 overall and 6.0 in each individual skill, on the Academic version. It adds that both test centre and online versions are accepted, and that the IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted.
Courses that ask for more
The postgraduate page also lists programmes with higher requirements. A few examples from its table:
- MSc Audiology: 7.0 overall, 6.5 in each skill.
- MSc Diagnostic Radiography: 7.0 overall, 7.0 in each skill.
- MSc Human Anatomy: 6.5 overall, 6.5 in each skill.
- MSc Marine Biology: 7.0 overall, 7.0 in Writing and 6.5 in the other skills.
- Master of Social Work: 7.0 overall, 7.0 in each skill.
- MSc Nursing (Non-EU): 6.5 overall, 6.5 in each skill.
The page lists more programmes than these, so open it for your own course rather than relying on this selection.
Research applicants
For a research programme of at least two years, the page describes a discretion: 6.5 overall, with one individual skill allowed 0.5 below, while every other skill stays at 6.0. It says the programme team must support the admission and the applicant must attend a UCC Language Centre course alongside the programme. Whether you qualify is for UCC to decide.
Validity: the two-year rule
Both pages use a two-year window. The undergraduate page says English tests must be taken no more than two years before the programme starts. The postgraduate page gives two years in the same way, counted back from the start of the course. Count back from the start date, not from your application date, and allow time for your results to arrive. IELTS results in Ireland covers timing and report forms.
Where the two pages differ
- One sitting. The undergraduate page says scores must come from one sitting and that UCC will not accept a combination of component scores from several tests. The postgraduate page does not say this in the text read.
- Online IELTS. The postgraduate page accepts the online version. The undergraduate page says nothing about online IELTS.
- One Skill Retake. The postgraduate page accepts it. The undergraduate page does not mention it, so ask UCC before planning an undergraduate application around a single-skill retake. Our guide to the One Skill Retake in Ireland explains the test itself.
- IELTS Indicator. The undergraduate page still has a line saying UCC accepts the IELTS Indicator test for the 2024 intake. That is a past intake, so do not rely on it and ask UCC what applies now.
The undergraduate page also lists other recognised English tests next to IELTS, and points to the UCC Language Centre and pre-sessional programmes of 6, 12 and 16 weeks for applicants who need to build their English.
Visa-requiring countries
The postgraduate page says applicants from visa-requiring countries must also meet any English requirements set by the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service. A university score and a visa rule are separate things. See IELTS for an Ireland student visa and check the official immigration page for the current rule.
Booking the test
IELTS is offered through IDP and the British Council; Band Booster does not register candidates or set fees. For venues see IELTS test centres in Ireland, and for fees and dates see where to check dates and fees. The scores at other universities are compared on IELTS scores at Irish universities.
How lessons with Mike can help with this
If your target is 6.5 with 6.0 or 6.5 in every skill, your weakest skill matters as much as your average. Mike teaches every session himself, one-to-one and live in English on Google Meet. He holds the Cambridge CELTA, is based in Hanoi, has taught English and IELTS for 12+ years in Vietnam, Turkey and Iran, and scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS (see About Mike).
He marks Writing Task 1 and Task 2 against the public band descriptors, runs Speaking Parts 1 to 3 in the real format with feedback in the moment, and leaves written progress notes in your account. No band is promised: progress depends on your starting point and the work between sessions.
The booking page shows each slot in your own time zone and the exact price before you pay; PayPal charges the US-dollar equivalent. Hanoi is 7 hours ahead of Ireland in winter and 6 hours ahead in summer. A paid 30-minute trial can be booked once, on a first booking. There is no subscription or package, and you can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before the slot.
