IELTS in Ireland is taken on computer: IDP's Irish site says all tests are on computer from 27 June 2026. Listening, Reading and Writing are on screen, Speaking is a face-to-face interview with an examiner, and published result times run from 1 to 5 days. Band Booster IELTS is a tutor, not a test centre.

Anyone booking IELTS in Ireland now sits it on computer: IDP's Irish site says all IELTS tests are delivered on computer from 27 June 2026, and ielts.org says paper-based IELTS ends from mid-2026. This page sets out what is typed, what is spoken, where Irish venues are listed and how soon results arrive. Mike, a CELTA-certified teacher in Hanoi, teaches one-to-one on Google Meet, but he is not a test centre.

Is IELTS in Ireland on paper or on computer?

On computer. ielts.org's announcement of 5 March 2026 says that from mid-2026 IELTS is no longer offered on paper and all tests are delivered on computer. IDP's Irish article on the change gives the date for Ireland: 27 June 2026. A Dublin test-centre information site also says that IELTS is no longer delivered on paper from June 2026. Paper results you already hold stay valid for the recommended two-year period, according to ielts.org.

Is it the same test?

IDP's page on IELTS on computer says the test format, question types, timing and content are the same as on paper, and its article says the same about scoring. Acceptance of a result is decided by the organisation that asks for it, so check its own page.

Section by section

SectionTime and partsOn computer
Listening30 minutes, 4 partsOn screen, with headphones provided
Reading60 minutes, 3 partsOn screen
Writing60 minutes, 2 partsTyped
Speaking11 to 14 minutes, 3 partsFace to face with an examiner

The times are from ielts.org's computer test page; the face-to-face Speaking is described on IDP's computer page. IDP says Listening, Reading and Writing follow one another on the same day, with Speaking just before or just after them, and that some centres schedule Speaking on the same day or up to 7 days before or after the test date, so check your booking confirmation. It also says the software has note-taking and highlighting, a help button and adjustable font size, and that headphones are always provided.

Writing on Paper

ielts.org says Writing on Paper, where you handwrite the Writing, will be available in selected countries from mid-2026 and not for IELTS for UKVI. It names no countries, and the Irish provider pages read for this guide do not mention it, so ask your centre before assuming you can handwrite.

Which centres list computer tests in Ireland?

The ielts.org test-centre finder for Ireland lists venues in Dublin, Galway and Cork, and every listing carries the tag Computer. Most are listed under the British Council. One Dublin centre has its own IDP page, Exam Centre of Ireland, which offers Academic and General Training. Some venues appear twice in the finder, and that centre's street address differs between IDP's page (Dublin 1) and ielts.org (Dublin 7), so confirm the address on your booking confirmation before you travel.

How long do results take?

ielts.org says most computer results are issued within 2 days and about half within 1 day, and describes the usual range as 1 to 2 days. The Irish providers publish wider ranges, which is why you should leave a margin before any deadline.

  • IDP Ireland's computer page says 1 to 5 days in its text, while a banner on the same page says 3 to 5 days.
  • IDP's results page says 1 to 5 days, with online viewing for 28 days and an e-TRF at eligible computer centres.
  • A Dublin test-centre information site says 2 to 5 calendar days.

These are typical timings, not promises. Details are on IELTS results in Ireland.

A retake of one skill

ielts.org says One Skill Retake must be taken within 60 days of the original test, only when your full test was IELTS on computer, and only at participating centres. Read IELTS One Skill Retake in Ireland before deciding between it and a full retake.

Practising for the on-screen test

This is a teacher's general advice, not provider guidance.

  • Type both Writing tasks inside 60 minutes, in a word processor that shows a word count.
  • Enter Listening answers while you listen, because the recording plays once.
  • Read whole Reading passages on a screen, not on paper.
  • Practise Speaking aloud with a person in the three-part format; it is still a conversation.

How lessons with Mike can help with this

Band Booster IELTS is a private tutoring service, not a test centre or the exam owners. It does not register candidates, set fees or provide exam software, and a lesson is practice, not the test. Mike holds a Cambridge CELTA (July 2017), is based in Hanoi, and teaches every session himself, live on Google Meet in English. His own IELTS result is 8.5 in Speaking; see about Mike.

For Writing, Task 1 and Task 2 answers are marked against the public band descriptors; read IELTS Writing feedback for Ireland. For Speaking you practise Parts 1 to 3 in the real format with feedback in the moment; read IELTS Speaking coach for Ireland. The booking page shows each time in your own time zone, and Hanoi is 7 hours ahead of Ireland in winter and 6 hours ahead in summer. No band is promised. Register for the test with the providers, whose pages carry the current fees and dates.

Common questions

Is IELTS on paper still available in Ireland?

No. IDP's Irish site says all IELTS tests are delivered on computer from 27 June 2026, and ielts.org says paper-based IELTS ends from mid-2026. Existing paper results stay valid for the recommended two-year period.

Is the IELTS Speaking test done on the computer?

No. Speaking is a face-to-face interview with an examiner, lasting 11 to 14 minutes in three parts. IDP says it takes place just before or just after the computer sections, and some centres schedule it up to 7 days either side, so check your booking confirmation for the time.

How long do computer-delivered IELTS results take in Ireland?

ielts.org says most are issued within 2 days, usually 1 to 2. Irish providers publish ranges of 1 to 5 days and 2 to 5 calendar days, and one IDP banner says 3 to 5. Treat them as typical times, not promises.

Is IELTS on computer harder than on paper?

IDP says the format, question types, timing and content are the same as on paper, and the article on the change says the scoring is too. The difference is how you answer, so typing and screen-reading practice helps.

Can I handwrite the Writing test in Ireland?

ielts.org says Writing on Paper will be available in selected countries from mid-2026 and names none. The Irish provider pages read for this page do not mention it, so ask your centre before you book.

Does Band Booster register me for the test or set the fees?

No. Band Booster IELTS is a private tutor, not a test centre or the exam owners. You register with IDP or the British Council, whose pages show current fees and dates. Mike teaches one-to-one on Google Meet, and the booking page shows the exact lesson amount before payment.

Can I try a lesson before committing?

A paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on your first booking. Lessons are one-to-one on Google Meet in English, and you can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before the slot.
