IELTS for Allied Health in Singapore: What AHPC's Page Says by Profession

Last updated:

AHPC's page, read October 2026, lists IELTS (Academic) minimum scores by profession: 6 in every component for diagnostic radiography and radiation therapy, 7 in every component for occupational therapy and physiotherapy, and overall 7.5 with 7.0 in each for speech-language therapy. Band Booster IELTS is a private tutor, not AHPC: Mike (CELTA, 8.5 in Speaking) coaches IELTS one-to-one online, and no band is promised.

Price: SGD 73.93 for a 60-minute one-to-one lesson; SGD 17.25 for the paid 30-minute trial. Amounts use the same price tiers as the booking page, in your local currency at exchange rates set on 6 October 2026. The booking page shows the exact amount before you pay, and PayPal charges the US-dollar equivalent (USD 57.76 for a 60-minute lesson).

The Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) page read in October 2026 sets IELTS (Academic) minimum scores by profession: at least 6 in every component for diagnostic radiography and radiation therapy, at least 7 in every component for occupational therapy and physiotherapy, and overall 7.5 with no less than 7.0 in every component for speech-language therapy. AHPC words the rule around the country of the basic professional qualification, accepts only results from within 2 years before the registration application, and asks for all components to be met in one sitting. Band Booster IELTS is a private tutoring service, independent of AHPC and of any test centre: Mike, a CELTA-certified teacher in Hanoi who scored 8.5 in IELTS Speaking, coaches IELTS one-to-one online on Google Meet, your price shows in your own currency before you pay, and no band is promised.

This page reports what the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) says on one of its own pages, read in October 2026. It is not registration advice, and Band Booster IELTS is independent of AHPC. AHPC decides who must show English proficiency and which results it accepts, so confirm every line on its page before you book a test. This page quotes no exam fee and no test date.

What AHPC's page says about English proficiency

The lines below come from AHPC's page on requirements for registration application, which showed a last-updated date of 24 July 2026 when it was read. The IELTS lines are for IELTS (Academic).

QuestionWhat AHPC's page says
Who must show English proficiencyApplicants whose basic professional qualification was not obtained from Singapore, Australia, Canada (except Quebec), New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa, the UK or the US. They must demonstrate English proficiency before conditional registration can be granted.
Diagnostic radiography and radiation therapyAt least 6 in all components (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking).
Occupational therapy and physiotherapyAt least 7 in all components.
Speech-language therapyOverall 7.5 and no less than 7.0 in all components. The page dates this figure from 1 August 2025.
How recent a result must beOnly results taken within 2 years preceding the date of the registration application are accepted.
Sittings and attemptsNo limit on the number of attempts, but the requirements for all components of a test must be met in a single examination sitting.

The same table on AHPC's page lists other English tests beside IELTS, with their own scores. This page covers IELTS only and makes no comparison between tests, so read AHPC's table for the full list.

Who the English rule is aimed at

AHPC's sentence is worded around where the basic professional qualification was obtained, not around nationality or first language. These are the eight countries the page lists:

As the council words it, a qualification from one of them is outside the sentence, so two applicants in the same profession can fall on different sides of the line. Do not assume a rule read on one council's page carries over to another: IELTS for healthcare registration in Singapore compares the councils. If your case does not fit AHPC's wording, ask AHPC.

How the three IELTS lines differ

Speech-language therapy is the only line with two conditions at once: an overall band of 7.5 and no less than 7.0 in each component. That 7.5 is AHPC's figure for the profession, and the page dates it from 1 August 2025. This page does not say what the date means for any individual, so ask AHPC if your timing is close to it. The lines name five professions, and this page does not claim they cover every allied health profession: if yours is not named, read AHPC's page for it.

A rule for each component is not an average

IELTS bands run from 0 to 9 in half-band steps. The overall band is the average of the four skill scores, rounded to the nearest half band: a .25 remainder rounds up to the next half band and a .75 remainder rounds up to the next whole band. The table uses invented score sets to show the arithmetic. They are illustrations, not real results, not any student's results and not predictions.

Scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking)Average and overall bandAt least 6 in all four?At least 7 in all four?Overall 7.5 and no less than 7.0 in all four?
7.0, 7.0, 7.5, 7.57.25, rounds up to 7.5YesYesYes
7.0, 7.0, 7.0, 7.57.125, rounds to 7.0YesYesNo: overall is 7.0
8.5, 8.5, 7.5, 6.57.75, rounds up to 8.0YesNo: one score is 6.5No: one score is 6.5
6.5, 6.5, 6.0, 5.56.125, rounds to 6.0No: one score is 5.5NoNo

Rows 1 and 2 differ by half a band in one skill and land on different overall bands; row 3 has a higher overall band than any other row and still misses the floors of 7 and 7.0. The IELTS band score calculator shows how four skill scores become an overall band.

The Academic module

Academic and General Training are different tests: in Writing Task 1, Academic describes a chart, graph, table, diagram or process, while General Training is a letter. This page does not say how AHPC treats General Training, so ask AHPC before you book that module. See IELTS Academic or General Training.

The two-year window, one sitting and retakes

This page does not say whether a One Skill Retake result could count where a single sitting is required, and it claims neither way. Ask AHPC before you plan around one; One Skill Retake or a full retake compares the two options. Leave a margin for results too: computer-delivered results usually arrive in about 2 days and the published ranges run up to 5 days, which are typical timings, not promises (see IELTS results in Singapore).

A job offer is on the eligibility list

The same page lists, among its eligibility points, having an offer of employment in the profession in Singapore. This page does not describe the other points, the application steps or the order to do things in. Because only results taken within 2 years before the application date are accepted, when to test and when to apply is a question for AHPC and your employer, not for a tutor.

What the four components ask of you

With a floor on every component, it makes sense to let your weakest skill set the plan rather than your favourite one. That is a general teaching observation, not guidance from AHPC or IELTS.

Registering for the IELTS test is a separate step

Band Booster IELTS is not AHPC, a test centre or the exam board. It does not register anyone for IELTS or set exam fees or dates. For how IELTS is delivered and where to start, read computer-delivered IELTS in Singapore; other pages cover test centres, ID and test-day rules and moving or cancelling a test.

Preparing for a score in every component with Mike

Mike teaches every session himself, one-to-one and live in English on Google Meet from Hanoi. He holds the Cambridge CELTA (July 2017) and scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS (About Mike). The lessons teach English and IELTS, not occupational therapy, physiotherapy, radiography or speech-language therapy, and neither he nor this page can say whether you meet AHPC's rules.

A session can cover Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking. Writing Task 1 and Task 2 are marked against the public band descriptors (Writing feedback), and Speaking is practised in the real three-part format with feedback during the session (Speaking coaching); there are also Listening and Reading sessions. Tell Mike which skill you most want to work on, so that practice can follow it. A lesson is practice, not the test; no band is promised, and progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions.

Singapore is in the higher regional price tier. The booking page shows each time in your own time zone and your price in your own currency before you pay. A paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on your first booking; there is no subscription and no package, and you can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before the slot. See the online IELTS tutor page for Singapore for how lessons work from there.

Common questions

What IELTS score does AHPC ask for?

AHPC's page, read in October 2026, lists IELTS (Academic) minimum scores by profession: at least 6 in all four components for diagnostic radiography and radiation therapy, at least 7 in all four for occupational therapy and physiotherapy, and overall 7.5 with no less than 7.0 in all four for speech-language therapy. Requirements can change, so read the page for your profession when you plan your test.

Does every overseas-trained physiotherapist, occupational therapist, radiographer or speech-language therapist have to show English proficiency?

AHPC's page ties the rule to the country of the basic professional qualification. Applicants whose qualification was not obtained from Singapore, Australia, Canada (except Quebec), New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa, the UK or the US must demonstrate English proficiency before conditional registration can be granted. Whether it applies in your case is for AHPC to say.

Is an overall band of 7 enough for physiotherapy or occupational therapy?

Not by itself. AHPC's line is written for all four components: at least 7 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The overall band is an average, so scores can average 7 while one component is lower.

How long is an IELTS result valid for AHPC?

AHPC's page accepts only results taken within 2 years preceding the date of the registration application, so the count runs back from the day you apply. Computer-delivered results usually arrive in about 2 days, with published ranges up to 5 days, which are typical timings and not promises.

Can I retake one skill or combine scores from two tests for AHPC?

AHPC's page says there is no limit on attempts, but the requirements for all components of a test must be met in a single examination sitting. This page does not say whether a One Skill Retake result could count alongside an earlier sitting, so ask AHPC before you rely on one.

Does Band Booster IELTS register me for the test or promise a score?

No. Band Booster IELTS is a private tutoring service, independent of AHPC and of the test providers: it does not register candidates or set exam fees or dates, and no band is promised. Mike, a CELTA-certified teacher in Hanoi who scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS, teaches IELTS one-to-one on Google Meet, and the booking page shows your price in your own currency before you pay.
