What the Dental Council says
The Dental Council of Ireland's language proficiency page says that applicants for registration from 1 November 2018 must be proficient in English. Graduates of a Council-accredited course in the Republic of Ireland do not have to submit proof.
Everyone else can show English in one of four ways listed on the page.
- Your primary dental qualification, or a post-graduate qualification in dentistry, was undertaken in English.
- You practised as a fully registered dental professional in an EU member state where English is an official language for 3 of the 5 years before you apply. The page says non-EU countries with English as an official language may be considered.
- You hold an OET certificate that meets the minimum scores.
- You hold an Academic IELTS certificate that meets the minimum scores.
This page is about the last route. The first two depend on documents from your university or regulator; check the Council's page for what it asks to see.
The IELTS requirement at a glance
| Point | What the Council page states |
|---|---|
| IELTS version | Academic |
| Minimum score | 7.0 in each module |
| Certificate age | No more than 2 years before your application is submitted |
| Formats accepted | Paper-based and computer-based |
| Not accepted | IELTS Online and OET@Home |
Details worth reading twice
- Each module. The 7.0 is a minimum in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking separately. The page gives no overall figure, so a strong overall band does not replace a lower module.
- Academic only. General Training is not listed. The IELTS partners' Academic test page describes the same four parts, with about 2 hours 45 minutes of test time, and recommends the Academic test for people seeking professional registration.
- The two-year clock. It runs to the day your application is submitted, not the day the Council decides. A test taken early in a long preparation for the Council's other requirements can expire before you apply.
- Online versions. The Council says it does not currently accept IELTS Online. If you plan to book, choose a test at a centre, on paper or on computer. Rules like this can change, so check the page before you book.
- One Skill Retake. The language page does not mention it. If you are thinking of retaking a single skill, ask the Council's registration department whether it will be accepted before you rely on it.
- Who decides. The Council says its registration department verifies the certificate and decides whether the requirement is met.
The alternative: OET for Dentistry
The Council also accepts the Occupational English Test for Dentistry, with grade B as the minimum in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, on a certificate that is also no more than two years old. For OET you must authorise OET to verify your results with the Council. This page does not cover OET preparation.
Where this fits in registration
The Council's dentists page lists proof of language proficiency as a required document and does not itself mention IELTS or a score; it sends you to the language page. It also says that dentists who do not fall into the categories listed on that page must pass the Dental Council Examination for Dentists in order to apply for full registration, and it recommends allowing three months for the registration process. Read that page for your own situation, because this is general information and not advice on your application.
Because of the two-year limit, it helps to work backwards: when you expect to submit the application, and so the earliest sensible test date. For test centres, see IELTS test centres in Ireland, and for where to check dates and fees, IELTS dates and fees in Ireland. Other Irish regulators set their own numbers, compared in IELTS scores for Irish registration bodies.
How lessons with Mike can help with this
Mike teaches one-to-one IELTS lessons, live on Google Meet, in English. They cover Academic Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. He marks Writing Task 1 and Task 2 against the public band descriptors and runs Speaking Parts 1 to 3 in the real format, with feedback in the moment. Written progress notes stay in your account. His own IELTS result is 8.5 in Speaking.
Lessons do not replace the Dental Council's process, and they do not set or guarantee any score. They are a place to practise the test itself. Hanoi is 7 hours ahead of Ireland in winter and 6 hours ahead in summer, and the booking calendar shows each slot in your own time zone. You can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before a slot, and there is no subscription or package. A paid 30-minute trial is available once, on a first booking. See the booking page, or read about Mike first.
