What does the Medical Council require?
The Council's English language page says the requirements apply to all new applications received on or after 1 March 2025. This guide is general information taken from that page, not personal advice on registration. Rules can change, so read the page itself before you book anything.
The IELTS score the Council lists
| Point | What the Council's page says |
|---|---|
| Version | IELTS Academic |
| Score | Overall 7.0, with at least 6.5 in each module |
| Sittings | Passed in a single sitting |
| Age of result | Within the last two years; the certificate must be dated within two years of your application and of your registration |
| Refused | IELTS Indicator and IELTS Online |
"Single sitting" matters: the page requires the score to be passed in a single sitting. The four modules are Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. ielts.org's Academic page lists them as Listening of about 30 minutes, Reading of 60 minutes, Writing of 60 minutes and Speaking of 11 to 14 minutes, and names professional registration, such as for doctors and nurses, among the reasons to choose Academic.
Which IELTS versions are refused?
The Council states plainly that it does not accept the IELTS Indicator or IELTS Online. Before paying for any test, check the Council's page for the current list of refused versions. The page names no other IELTS variant, so if you are unsure about a version it does not mention, ask the Council.
If your certificate expires before you register
The two-year rule applies at two points: when you apply and when you register. The page says that if a certificate expires before you are eligible to register, you do not need to re-sit if you provide references covering at least three months of recent full-time study or employment in a country where English is the predominant language. The Council keeps a list of such countries, based on the UK General Medical Council list. Evidence and certificates are verified at source.
Who is exempt?
The Council lists groups that do not currently need to provide English-language evidence, and adds that this will likely change in the future:
- graduates of EU/EEA medical schools
- EU citizens
- graduates of medical schools in the UK, Australia, New Zealand or the USA
- applicants for Specialist, Visiting EEA or Internship registration
Check the page for the full, current list; everyone not listed must provide evidence. Because the list may change, check the page on the day you apply rather than relying on any summary, including this one.
Other routes besides IELTS
IELTS is one of several options on the page. The Council also lists:
- a basic medical degree and internship both completed through English in a country where English is the predominant language
- a Higher Qualification obtained through English in such a country; if it is on the Registration Rules list for PRES exemption, the page says you are exempt from IELTS
- OET at grade B in each module, single sitting within two years (OET @ Home is not accepted)
- a Cambridge ESOL exam at CEFR level C1 or C2, within the last two years
It has no list of equivalent tests. You may submit another test for consideration, but the Council cannot guarantee that it will be accepted. This page describes only the IELTS route; Mike's lessons do not cover OET or Cambridge preparation.
What the page does not say
The Council's page does not mention IELTS One Skill Retake. ielts.org's One Skill Retake page says you can retake any one section within 60 days of your original test day, and advises checking directly with the organisation whether it accepts the retake before you book. So ask the Council in writing before relying on a retake, and compare it with a full retake in IELTS One Skill Retake in Ireland. The page also says nothing about IELTS for UKVI.
Registering for the test is done with the provider (IDP or the British Council). This page states no fees and no test dates; check the provider's page for both. For other Irish bodies, see IELTS scores for Irish registration bodies, compared.
How lessons with Mike can help with this
Band Booster IELTS is a private tutoring service. It is not the Medical Council, a test centre or the exam board, it does not register candidates or set fees, and a lesson is practice, not the test. Mike is Cambridge CELTA-certified and based in Hanoi, Vietnam, with 12+ years teaching English and IELTS in Vietnam, Turkey and Iran. His own IELTS result is 8.5 in Speaking. He teaches every session himself, live on Google Meet, in English, and the lessons cover IELTS Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Nothing in them covers OET or the Council's own procedures.
If your target is the same in every module, an even profile matters more than one strong section. In lessons Mike marks Writing Task 1 and Task 2 against the public band descriptors, runs Speaking Parts 1 to 3 in the real format with feedback in the moment, and leaves written progress notes in your account. No band or timeline is promised: progress depends on your starting point and the work between sessions. See the online IELTS tutor page for Ireland and about Mike. The booking page shows each time in your own time zone and your exact price before you pay. A paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on your first booking.
