For nurses and midwives qualified outside the EU, NMBI's page (read October 2026) asks for IELTS Academic or Academic for UKVI at 7.0 overall, 7.0 in any three components and 6.5 in any one, from one sitting less than two years old. It does not accept One Skill Retake or IELTS Online. Check the NMBI page before booking.

Price: EUR 51.53 for a 60-minute one-to-one lesson; EUR 12.02 for the paid 30-minute trial. Amounts use the same price tiers as the booking page, in your local currency at exchange rates set on 6 October 2026. The booking page shows the exact amount before you pay, and PayPal charges the US-dollar equivalent (USD 57.76 for a 60-minute lesson).

You can also choose a 2-hour lesson on the booking page; the price is shown there before you pay.

This page explains what the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland says about English language evidence for overseas applicants, including the IELTS scores it names. Mike, a CELTA-certified teacher in Hanoi, teaches IELTS one-to-one, live on Google Meet in English.

This page summarises what the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) published about English language evidence for overseas applicants, as read in October 2026. NMBI revises its page, so treat the official page as the rule and this page as a reading guide. It is general information, not personal advice, and it says nothing about whether you will be registered.

Band Booster IELTS is a private tutor, not a test centre, an agent or part of NMBI. It does not register candidates or set exam fees or dates. Read the current rule on the NMBI English language requirements page before you book anything.

The three routes on NMBI's page

NMBI says overseas applicants must show they can communicate effectively in their practice, across speaking, reading, listening and writing. A test is only one of three ways to show it:

  1. Trained in English. Your nursing or midwifery qualification was taught and examined in English in one of the countries NMBI recognises for this purpose: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United States and the United Kingdom. For colleges in the French provinces of Canada, the college must confirm that the qualification and practice placements were completed in English.
  2. Registered and practised in English. Three years of post-registration practice within the last five years in one of those countries, shown by a letter or email from the employer or nursing authority stating the place, dates and job title.
  3. An English language test. IELTS Academic, IELTS Academic for UKVI or OET, at the scores below.

If route 1 or route 2 fits you, the page does not ask for a test. It also has separate wording for applicants from an EU country where English is listed as a co-official language; this page does not cover that.

The IELTS score NMBI names

For the IELTS route, NMBI asks for an overall score of 7.0 with a minimum of 7.0 in any three components and 6.5 in any one component. The NMBI page also gives an example of a result that meets this; check it there.

Read the rule as a whole, not as a fixed list of minimums per skill: three components at 7.0 or more, and the remaining one no lower than 6.5, with 7.0 overall. The rule as quoted does not say which component the 6.5 must be.

Working through it

  • The overall band is worked out from the four component scores under IELTS's own rounding rules; the band score calculator shows how four scores combine, and ielts.org is the place to check the rule.
  • Two components at 6.5 would break the "any three at 7.0" part of the rule, even if the overall band reached 7.0.
  • One component below 6.5 would fail the rule whatever the other three scores are.

The OET (Nursing) route is listed on the same page with its own grades. This page does not compare the two tests, and Mike does not teach OET.

Which IELTS formats and results NMBI accepts

NMBI names the Academic version, and the Academic for UKVI version, for this route. The page does not name General Training. If you are unsure which version to book, see Academic or General Training, and ask NMBI if the page leaves you in doubt.

QuestionWhat NMBI's page says
How old can the result be?Less than two years old.
Can I combine two sittings? No. Only one test result is accepted.
IELTS One Skill Retake?Not accepted.
IELTS Online (at home)? Not accepted. NMBI also does not accept OET at home.
Does NMBI check the score?Yes, it verifies results independently, using the TRF number you give.

Two practical points follow. First, because one result must meet the whole rule, a single sitting that misses one component cannot be patched with a better score from another sitting, and a One Skill Retake does not count for this purpose. To understand what that retake is and where other bodies accept it, read our page on IELTS One Skill Retake. Second, a result can pass the two-year limit between your test and your application, so check its date against the rule before you submit.

When the evidence is asked for

According to the page, qualification recognition at Stage 1 does not need language evidence. For online applications started after 28 September 2020, the evidence is asked for at registration, Stage 2, and the test result must be valid at the point you submit. NMBI says it is still processing applications that began on the older paper-based route, and for those the test must be valid at the time of that application. NMBI also says not to apply for registration until you meet the minimum scores, and that the assessment fee is not refunded if the English requirements are not met. Check the current wording on the official page.

Booking the test

Test centres in Ireland are listed on the ielts.org test centre directory. Which venues offer the Academic for UKVI version is a separate question, covered on IELTS for UKVI and Life Skills in Ireland. Dates and fees are set by the providers, so check the provider page; see where to check dates and fees.

How lessons with Mike can help with this

Mike is a Cambridge CELTA-certified teacher (July 2017) based in Hanoi, Vietnam, with 12+ years teaching English and IELTS in Vietnam, Turkey and Iran, and an 8.5 in IELTS Speaking of his own. He teaches every session himself, live and one-to-one on Google Meet, in English. See About Mike.

  • Writing: Task 1 and Task 2 marked against the public band descriptors, which matters when one component close to 6.5 or 7.0 decides the result.
  • Speaking: Parts 1 to 3 in the real format, with feedback in the moment.
  • Listening and Reading: timed practice in the Academic format, with a review of mistakes.

Lessons prepare you for the IELTS test itself; they do not cover OET, nursing practice or NMBI procedures, and no band is promised. Written progress notes stay in your account. The booking calendar shows each slot in your own time zone: Hanoi is 7 hours ahead of Ireland in winter and 6 hours ahead in summer, because Hanoi does not change its clocks. You can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before the slot. A paid 30-minute trial is available once per student, on a first booking. See the booking page, where the price is shown in your own currency before you pay.

Common questions

What IELTS score does NMBI ask for?

NMBI's page asks for IELTS Academic or Academic for UKVI with an overall 7.0, a minimum of 7.0 in any three components and 6.5 in any one. Read the current page, including its example, before you book.

Do I need an English test at all?

Not necessarily. NMBI lists two other routes: a qualification taught and examined in English in a recognised country, or three years of practice in the last five years in one. A test is the third route.

How long is an IELTS result valid for NMBI?

NMBI says it only accepts IELTS or OET results less than two years old. For online applications, the result must be valid when you submit the registration application at Stage 2.

Does NMBI accept IELTS One Skill Retake or IELTS Online?

No. NMBI's page says One Skill Retake is not accepted, and that it does not accept IELTS online or OET at home. Only one test result is accepted, so results cannot be combined.

Can I use IELTS General Training for NMBI?

The page names IELTS Academic and IELTS Academic for UKVI and does not name General Training. If you are unsure, ask NMBI before you book.

Do you teach OET or help with NMBI registration?

No. Mike teaches IELTS Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and General English. He does not teach OET, register candidates or advise on NMBI procedures; use NMBI's page for those.

Can lessons help me reach a specific component score?

Lessons prepare you for the test format with marked Writing, Speaking in the real format and timed Listening and Reading practice. No band is promised: progress depends on your starting point and your work between sessions.
