Which IELTS tests count for a UK visa?
The UK Home Office accepts English tests called Secure English Language Tests (SELTs). GOV.UK's SELT guidance names two from the IELTS SELT Consortium: IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills. GOV.UK says the result must come from a test sat at an approved test location, and that results are valid for 2 years from the date the test is awarded.
The guidance says the list of approved tests gives the level and minimum grade for each route. So which test you need, and at what level, depends on your visa category. Check the named GOV.UK page and the instructions for your own application. This page does not say which visa needs which level.
Where in Ireland is it listed?
GOV.UK's SELT guidance links the list of approved test centres outside the UK. In the October 2026 version, the IELTS SELT Consortium has one Irish row, shown as available:
| Where | Address as listed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Dublin | Dame Court 15/16, Dublin 2 | GOV.UK list, row with the list's own label "BC Dublin" |
The IELTS partners' test-centre directory for Ireland agrees. It tags the Dame Court venue (15/16 Dame Court, Dublin 2), listed under the British Council, as "UKVI Approved", with the Computer format and One Skill Retake tags. No other Irish venue in that directory carries the UKVI tag. The venue operator's registration page says it is the venue for IELTS for UKVI and Life Skills in Ireland.
GOV.UK says to check the test provider's website that a centre is open. Lists change, so look again close to your booking.
What the Dame Court pages list
The directory shows Dame Court as two separate venue rows at the same address, both tagged UKVI Approved, and the two listing pages do not list the same tests:
- First listing: General Training, UKVI Academic, UKVI General Training (all on computer) and Life Skills A1.
- Second listing: Academic (on computer) and Life Skills B1. This page shows no UKVI tests.
Read together, they suggest that UKVI Academic, UKVI General Training, Life Skills A1 and Life Skills B1 are all offered at Dame Court. But each page lists only part of that, so confirm the exact test and level on the booking page itself before you pay. The listings show fee amounts and note that prices may vary; check them there. This page states no fees and no dates.
Checking the tests at Dame Court
| Test | Listed at Dame Court | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS for UKVI Academic | Yes, first listing | Whether your route accepts it |
| IELTS for UKVI General Training | Yes, first listing | Whether your route accepts it |
| IELTS Life Skills A1 | Yes, first listing | Level your route asks for |
| IELTS Life Skills B1 | Yes, second listing | Level your route asks for |
The levels are named on the directory pages and in GOV.UK's list; the grade that counts for your route is set by that list.
Format: computer, and fully digital for UKVI
On the ielts.org listing pages, the General Training, UKVI Academic, UKVI General Training and Academic tests are shown on computer. No format is shown beside Life Skills A1 or B1. ielts.org's update on test delivery says UKVI SELT will only be available in the fully digital format and that exact timelines vary by market. It gives no UKVI-specific date and does not mention Life Skills, so ask the provider about the format of your booking.
ID, age and results
- ID: the venue operator's registration page says only valid passports or EU National Identity Cards are accepted. Check your booking confirmation for what to bring.
- Under 18: the same page says a guardian's contact details must be provided on the application form, and that an application without them may be rejected.
- Results: the venue's results page covers ordinary IELTS only and says nothing about UKVI or Life Skills. Ask the provider how and when your result is issued, and leave a margin before any visa deadline.
- Retakes: the directory tags Dame Court with One Skill Retake, but whether that applies to a UKVI or Life Skills test is not stated there. Ask before you rely on it.

How lessons with Mike can help with this
Band Booster IELTS is a private tutoring service. It is not a test centre, not the exam board, and not partnered with the British Council, IDP, Cambridge or any government. It does not register candidates or set fees, and it does not give visa advice. Mike is a Cambridge CELTA-certified teacher based in Hanoi, Vietnam, who teaches every session himself, live on Google Meet, in English, one-to-one. His own IELTS result includes 8.5 in Speaking (about Mike).
If your route needs IELTS for UKVI Academic or General Training, lessons cover IELTS Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking: Writing Task 1 and Task 2 are marked against the public band descriptors, and Speaking Parts 1 to 3 are run in the real format with feedback in the moment. Lessons do not cover IELTS Life Skills, and no band or result is promised. The booking page shows each slot in your own time zone, Ireland being 7 hours behind Hanoi in winter and 6 hours behind in summer, and your price before you pay.
