IELTS for UKVI in Malaysia: Where the Lists Show It and What the Rules Say

Last updated:

GOV.UK names IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills as the IELTS tests approved for UK visa applications, and ielts.org says UKVI accepts IELTS for UKVI only if taken in person at an official test centre. The Home Office list (file dated 9 October 2026) shows IELTS rows in six Malaysian places, so check the current list on GOV.UK; Band Booster is a private tutor, not a test centre.

Price: MYR 141.67 for a 60-minute one-to-one lesson; MYR 39.35 for the paid 30-minute trial. Amounts use the same price tiers as the booking page, in your local currency at exchange rates set on 6 October 2026. The booking page shows the exact amount before you pay, and PayPal charges the US-dollar equivalent (USD 34.66 for a 60-minute lesson).

The Home Office list of approved test centres outside the UK (file dated 9 October 2026) has nine IELTS SELT Consortium rows for Malaysia, in six places, and ielts.org says UKVI accepts IELTS for UKVI only when it is taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre. The ielts.org finder and IDP Malaysia's session pages do not line up everywhere, so this page sets the three side by side. Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutor, not a test centre: Mike, a CELTA-certified teacher in Hanoi who scored 8.5 in Speaking, coaches one-to-one on Google Meet, and your lesson price shows in your own currency on the booking page before you pay.

This page is about the test, not a visa guide. It reports what GOV.UK, the Home Office list, ielts.org and IDP Malaysia showed for Malaysia in October 2026; all of it can change. It does not say which test, version or score your application needs, gives no visa or immigration advice, and quotes no score requirement, exam fee or test date.

What IELTS for UKVI is, in the sources' words

GOV.UK's page on secure English language tests (SELT) names the IELTS tests approved for UK visa applications: IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills, both listed under the IELTS SELT Consortium. The page requires the test to have been taken at an approved test location.

ielts.org's page on IELTS tests for UK visas and immigration states the in-person rule: UKVI accepts only tests taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre. IDP Malaysia's UKVI page gives the reason, that UKVI requires an additional layer of security when language tests are taken. So the venue matters as much as the test: a test taken at home is not what that rule describes.

What the Home Office list shows for Malaysia

GOV.UK publishes a list of approved test centres outside the UK. The file read for this page is dated 9 October 2026, and the GOV.UK page said it was updated on 12 October 2026. The file is one table with a Provider column, ordered by country, and this page reads only the rows whose provider is IELTS SELT Consortium. For Malaysia there are nine such rows, in six places.

Place (from the address)IELTS SELT Consortium rows
Johor BahruIDP Johor Bahru
Kuala LumpurThree rows: one IDP row at a Jalan Ampang address, and two British Council rows named BC Kuala Lumpur - Classroom and BC Kuala Lumpur - Exam Hall
KuchingTwo rows with the same Jalan Tun Jugah address, named SUNWAY COLLEGE and IDP Kuala Lumpur - Sunway College
PenangIDP Penang
Kota KinabaluInter Education Consult (IEC)
Subang JayaOne row named IDP Kuala Lumpur whose address is in Subang Jaya (Jalan SS 15/8)

What ielts.org's UKVI Approved filter shows

The ielts.org test centre finder has a UKVI Approved filter. With it switched on for Malaysia, the finder showed 11 results on 24 October 2026. Those 11 results are nine distinct venue names, in Kuala Lumpur, Subang Jaya, Johor Bahru, Penang (Georgetown), Kuching and Kota Kinabalu: the same six places as the Home Office list. Two names, British Council Kuala Lumpur_BCKL and British Council, IELTS Speaking Room BCKL, each appear as two records, which is how nine names make 11 results.

Three of the 11 records list Life Skills, according to ielts.org's listings, under two venue names. The record named Subang Jaya (UKVI IELTS - Paper based) lists Life Skills A1 and B1; British Council, IELTS Speaking Room BCKL appears as two records, one listing Life Skills A1 and the other Life Skills B1. The words "Paper based" are part of the Subang Jaya record's name on ielts.org. This page does not read them as a statement about the format of the Academic or General Training tests in Malaysia; computer-delivered IELTS in Malaysia covers what the provider pages say about format.

A venue can appear more than once in each list, so do not add the counts together; neither list is a timetable.

What IDP Malaysia's pages showed on 24 October 2026

IDP Malaysia's test dates pages show sessions city by city. On 24 October 2026 its pages for Kuching, Kuala Lumpur, Subang Jaya, Penang, Kota Kinabalu, Ipoh and Johor Bahru were read. It is a snapshot of one day: sessions come and go, so a missing card does not prove a test is never offered, and a card does not promise the date you need.

PlaceWhat IDP's page showed
KuchingSession cards named IELTS for UKVI, for example "IELTS for UKVI (General Training)"
Kuala LumpurIELTS for UKVI session cards
Subang JayaIELTS for UKVI session cards
PenangSession cards named IELTS for UKVI (Academic) and IELTS for UKVI (General Training)
Kota KinabaluThe filter listed UKVI test types, but no UKVI session card appeared among all the sessions that could be seen
IpohThe same: UKVI test types in the filter, and no UKVI session card among all the sessions that could be seen
Johor BahruThe filter lists Academic for UKVI and General Training for UKVI; this reading did not establish whether UKVI sessions were open

Kota Kinabalu is where the sources line up least: the Home Office list has a row there named Inter Education Consult (IEC) and ielts.org's filter includes the city, but IDP's dates page showed no UKVI card that day. ielts.org prints its Kota Kinabalu UKVI record as British Council, Inter Education Consult; neither that name nor the Home Office name is an IDP name, so IDP's dates page is not necessarily where this venue's sessions would appear. This page cannot say whether these point to the same venue, so if you need UKVI there, ask the provider named on your booking before you pay.

Ipoh shows no UKVI entry in any of the three sources: no Home Office row, not one of ielts.org's six places, and no UKVI card on IDP's page. That describes the day it was read, not what can ever be arranged. Johor Bahru is listed by both the Home Office and ielts.org, so confirm with IDP whether UKVI sessions are open. Penang is on both lists, and IDP's Penang dates page showed IELTS for UKVI session cards that day.

Academic, General Training or Life Skills: which version

IDP's pages show that the UKVI test comes in versions: session cards at Kuching and Penang read "IELTS for UKVI (General Training)" and "IELTS for UKVI (Academic)", and the filter on the Johor Bahru dates page lists Academic for UKVI and General Training for UKVI. This page does not say which version an application needs: ask the body that requires the result and read the UK government's guidance for your route. IELTS Academic vs General Training explains how the two differ in general.

IELTS Life Skills is a separate test that GOV.UK names alongside IELTS for UKVI. This page does not describe it; ask the provider before booking one.

Rules that apply to the result

Scores are stated for every component

ielts.org says the UK government requires you to achieve the stated scores in every component of your test, so a good overall average does not by itself meet a requirement set for each component. This page gives no score: the level comes from the UK government's guidance for your route. The IELTS band score calculator shows how skill scores combine, and a visa minimum is separate from a university's requirement (IELTS scores for study abroad).

How recent the result must be

GOV.UK says that for results to be accepted, the test must have been awarded in the two years before the date of your application, so both the award date and the application date matter.

Identity on test day

GOV.UK's guidance says your identity document must be an original, not a photocopy, be current, include a photo of you and match the information you gave when you booked the test. Read the rest of that page for the documents it accepts. IELTS test day in Malaysia covers one provider's general rules.

The test may not be at the nearest location

GOV.UK says a test may not always be at the location nearest to you and that, where your country has no approved location, you must travel to another country. Read the address on the session you choose.

Student visa and your university

GOV.UK's Student visa page on knowledge of English lists several ways to show your English, passing a secure English language test among them, and says that for degree-level study a Higher Education Provider can assess your English itself. Which applies to you is for that page and your university to say; this page ties no UKVI result to any visa or admission outcome.

Before you book: five things to check

  1. Get the requirement from the body that wants your result: the test, the version and the level.
  2. Choose a session whose name says UKVI, at a venue on the current Home Office list.
  3. Read the address before you pay; the test may not be at the nearest location.
  4. Plan to sit it in person at the centre.
  5. Check documents and dates: the booking must match your identity document, and the award date should fit the two-year rule against your application date.

Fees, dates and the rules for moving or cancelling a booking are set by the provider and change, so this page quotes none. You book the test with the provider, not with Band Booster.

Venue guides for Malaysia

Venue guides cover Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley, Johor Bahru and Johor, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and Ipoh; the hub lists IELTS test centres in Malaysia by state, and Penang is on the Penang tutor page.

How one-to-one lessons with Mike fit alongside the test

Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutoring service, not a test centre or the exam board. It does not register candidates, hold a place, set test fees or dates, issue results or give visa or immigration advice, and a lesson is practice, not an IELTS for UKVI test.

Mike teaches every session himself, one-to-one, live on Google Meet in English, from Hanoi. He holds the Cambridge CELTA (July 2017) and scored 8.5 in Speaking in his own IELTS (about Mike). A session can cover Listening, Reading, Writing Task 1 and Task 2 marked against the public band descriptors (IELTS Writing feedback), and Speaking Parts 1, 2 and 3 in the real test format (IELTS Speaking coaching), with feedback during the session.

A regular session lasts 60 minutes, and a paid 30-minute trial can be taken once, on your first booking. You can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before a session, and there is no subscription or package. Malaysia is in the middle regional price tier, and the booking page shows each slot in your own time zone and your price in your own currency before you pay. No band is promised: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions. The online IELTS tutor page for Malaysia explains how booking works.

Common questions

Which IELTS tests does GOV.UK name for UK visa applications?

GOV.UK's page on secure English language tests names IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills, listed under the IELTS SELT Consortium, and requires the test to have been taken at an approved test location. Which of them, if either, your application needs depends on your route, so check the UK government's guidance and the organisation asking for your result.

Where in Malaysia do the lists show IELTS for UKVI?

The Home Office list (file dated 9 October 2026) has nine IELTS SELT Consortium rows in six places: Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Subang Jaya, with no Ipoh row. ielts.org's UKVI Approved filter showed 11 results, nine distinct venue names, in the same six places on 24 October 2026. Both change, so check the current list on GOV.UK and the venue on your booking.

Can I take IELTS for UKVI at home or online?

ielts.org says UKVI accepts only tests taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre, and GOV.UK requires the test to be taken at an approved test location. A test taken any other way is not what those statements describe, so ask the provider before booking anything that is not at a centre.

Why do the lists not line up for Kota Kinabalu and Johor Bahru, and what about Ipoh?

This page cannot say why. For Kota Kinabalu, the Home Office list has a row for Inter Education Consult and ielts.org's filter includes the city, while IDP's Kota Kinabalu dates page showed no UKVI session card on 24 October 2026; ielts.org prints that record as British Council, Inter Education Consult, so IDP's page is not necessarily where its sessions would appear. For Johor Bahru, both lists include the city and IDP's filter names UKVI test types, but this reading did not establish whether UKVI sessions were open. Ipoh has no Home Office row, is not among ielts.org's six places and showed no UKVI card on IDP's page. Confirm with the provider before you pay.

What score and how recent a result does IELTS for UKVI need?

This page gives no score: the level comes from the UK government's guidance for your route. ielts.org says the UK government requires the stated scores in every component of the test, and GOV.UK says the test must have been awarded in the two years before the date of the application.

What ID do I need for an IELTS for UKVI test?

GOV.UK says your identity document must be an original, not a photocopy, be current, include a photo of you and match the information you gave when you booked the test. Read the rest of its guidance for the documents it accepts, and your provider's test-day instructions.

Does GOV.UK say a university can assess my English itself?

GOV.UK's Student visa page says that for degree-level study a Higher Education Provider can assess your level of English itself, and lists passing a SELT as one of several ways to show knowledge of English. Which applies to you is for your university and that page to say, so ask the university and read the page; this page gives no visa advice.

Does Band Booster register me for IELTS for UKVI or give visa advice?

No. Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutor, not a test centre: it does not register candidates, set fees or dates, or give visa or immigration advice, and a lesson is practice, not a UKVI test. Mike, who is CELTA-certified and scored 8.5 in Speaking, coaches Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking one-to-one on Google Meet, with your price shown in your own currency before you pay. No band is promised.
