IELTS Test Centres in Malaysia by State: IDP and British Council Venues, and Where the Lists Disagree

Last updated:

IDP Malaysia's test-dates page lists 20 IDP test centres, and British Council Malaysia says it offers tests in 17 locations in 7 states (both read 24 October 2026), but the pages do not always agree with each other or with ielts.org's finder. Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutor, not a test centre: Mike, a CELTA-certified teacher in Hanoi, coaches one-to-one on Google Meet.

Price: MYR 141.67 for a 60-minute one-to-one lesson; MYR 39.35 for the paid 30-minute trial. Amounts use the same price tiers as the booking page, in your local currency at exchange rates set on 6 October 2026. The booking page shows the exact amount before you pay, and PayPal charges the US-dollar equivalent (USD 34.66 for a 60-minute lesson).

IDP Malaysia's test-dates page lists 20 IDP IELTS test centres across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, and British Council Malaysia's page says it offers tests in 17 locations in 7 states (both read 24 October 2026). ielts.org's test-centre finder lists venues of both providers, and the three sources differ in several details. You book the test with IDP or British Council Malaysia, not with Band Booster IELTS, a private online tutor: Mike, a CELTA-certified teacher in Hanoi who scored 8.5 in IELTS Speaking, coaches one-to-one on Google Meet, and the booking page shows your price in your own currency before you pay.

The IDP, British Council Malaysia and ielts.org details below were read on 24 October 2026. Centre lists change and the sources do not always agree, so use this page as a map for your own checking and confirm the venue on the session you book. It quotes no exam fee or test date, because the providers set and change those.

The short version

By state: IDP's list beside British Council Malaysia's

IDP's list names 19 towns, and Kota Kinabalu has two centres, which makes 20. IDP lists towns, not states, so the grouping by state below is this page's own; the British Council column follows its own table, which names a state for each entry. Both columns name towns and areas, not the premises that host a centre: for an address, open the centre's IDP page or the finder.

On this grouping, 14 of IDP's 20 centres are on the peninsula, three are in Sabah and three in Sarawak. Sibu, in Sarawak, is in British Council Malaysia's table but not on IDP's list.

Where the lists disagree

Paper or computer: the list's introduction and the centre pages differ

IDP's test-dates page still has an introduction saying candidates can choose between the computer-delivered and the paper-based formats from the closest test centre. Yet each of the 20 IDP centre pages read on 24 October 2026 ends its heading with “(IELTS on Computer)”, for example IDP Kuching (IELTS on Computer). We cannot tell which statement is current, so confirm the format with IDP before you pay. For both providers, see computer-delivered IELTS in Malaysia.

Twenty centres on one page, ten locations on another

IDP's computer-based IELTS page names ten Malaysian computer test locations: Subang Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Penang, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Ipoh, Kepong, Melaka and Tawau. Nine towns on the test-dates list are not among those ten: Bintulu, Butterworth, Klang, Kluang, Miri, Nilai, Petaling Jaya, Rawang and Shah Alam. Yet each of the nine has a centre page headed “(IELTS on Computer)”. We cannot tell which list is more complete, so do not count centres from the shorter one; check the centre's own page and the session you want.

One Skill Retake tags do not match

IDP's list has a filter labelled “Only show One Skill Retake centres” and tags centres one by one. Fifteen of the 20 are tagged; Klang, Miri, Petaling Jaya, Rawang and Shah Alam are not. But IDP's own Shah Alam centre page shows sessions labelled “One Skill Retake available”, although the list does not tag Shah Alam. So the list is not a complete guide.

That is why this page does not say a retake is possible only at the 15 tagged centres, or at every centre. ielts.org says it is widely available in many countries and to check availability with your test centre; its finder has its own filter. If a retake might matter, ask about the exact session before you book; One Skill Retake or full retake explains the choice.

Sessions come and go: empty date pages

When read on 24 October 2026, the IDP date pages for Melaka, Miri, Tawau and Kluang showed no sessions, only a message that nothing matched and a suggestion to search more broadly (for example Melaka). Others may have been empty too. Sessions come and go, so an empty page describes that moment, not the centre: check again later, widen the search or ask IDP.

British Council Malaysia: 17 locations, 16 entries

British Council Malaysia's dates, fees and locations page says it offers IELTS tests in 17 locations in 7 states (Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang, Johor, Perak, Sarawak and Sabah) and that you need to come to a test centre to sit your test. The table on the same page, summarised above, has 16 entries. Its single Sabah entry, in Kota Kinabalu, is named differently from the British Council record that ielts.org's finder shows for Kota Kinabalu. We cannot tell whether that is one place under two names, two places, or an update that one page has not caught up with, so check the venue on your booking confirmation. The IELTS for UKVI guide looks at the same mismatch.

A venue name is not an address

On ielts.org the Melaka venue is listed under a name that begins “IDP IELTS Malaysia - Melaka” and ends “Johor Bahru”, with the host's name in between, which this page leaves out (search the finder for Melaka to see it). The address on that record is in Melaka (Taman Siantan, Melaka 75200), and Johor Bahru is a different city in a different state, so the name is a poor guide to where the venue is. We cannot say why the name reads this way; read the address on the venue page and on your booking confirmation.

A town on two lists but not on IDP's: Sibu

Both British Council Malaysia's table and ielts.org's finder list a British Council venue in Sibu, in Sarawak, a town that is not on IDP's list. On the finder, the address line reads Jalan Lily off Jln Tun Abang Hj Openg, with Queensway on the next line. A town missing from IDP's list may therefore still have a venue from the other provider; the Kuching and Sarawak guide goes through the Sarawak venues.

British Council Malaysia: where to book and where tests are held

These are two different questions. According to British Council Malaysia's booking page, you can book online or at its offices in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, which answers where to book. Where tests are held is a separate list: the table above, and the British Council venues that ielts.org's finder showed in October 2026 in towns including Sibu, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Johor Bahru, Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur. So the two offices are not the only British Council places in Malaysia.

The venue guides for Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Ipoh cover each town in turn, and the Penang page covers Penang.

The finder and its filters

ielts.org's finder has filters for One Skill Retake and for UKVI Approved. With UKVI Approved switched on, it showed 11 results for Malaysia on 24 October 2026, carrying nine different names, because two records appear twice with the same name and address. Different records can also share a street address: in Subang Jaya, a record named “Subang Jaya (UKVI IELTS - Paper based)” and one named “IELTS on Computer - IDP Subang Jaya” both give 18 Jalan SS 15/8. A result count is therefore not a venue count, which is why this page totals only IDP's list of centres; the Kuala Lumpur guide looks at the Subang Jaya record.

The version of the test you need is usually set by the organisation that receives your result. This page gives no visa advice; see IELTS for UKVI in Malaysia and IELTS Academic vs General Training.

How to book, and what to check first

  1. Ask who needs your result. A university, employer or authority may name the version and the score; IELTS scores for study abroad explains why visa and admission requirements differ, and MUET or IELTS? helps if a Malaysian institution accepts either.
  2. Choose a provider. With IDP, use the test-dates page and book online or at an IDP branch. With British Council Malaysia, book online or at its offices in Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
  3. Pick a town from the table, then open the centre. Compare the address on the centre or venue page with the finder, and trust the address over the name.
  4. Read the format on the session you want. Do not rely on a list's introduction for paper or computer.
  5. Ask about One Skill Retake only if it matters, and ask about the exact session.
  6. Read the provider's confirmation. IELTS test day in Malaysia covers ID and what to bring.

Band Booster IELTS is not a test centre

Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutoring service. It is not a test centre or the exam board, it does not register candidates, hold places, set exam fees or choose test dates, and it is not affiliated with IDP, the British Council or any venue named on this page.

Mike, who holds the Cambridge CELTA and is based in Hanoi, teaches every session himself, one-to-one over Google Meet, in English. He scored 8.5 in IELTS Speaking. A session can cover Listening, Reading, Writing (Task 1 and Task 2, marked against the public band descriptors) or Speaking (Parts 1, 2 and 3 in the real test format), with feedback during the session and written progress notes in your account afterwards.

Because lessons are online, your state or town makes no difference to them. Malaysia is one hour ahead of Hanoi all year, and the booking page shows each slot in your own time and your price in your own currency before you pay; a first booking can be the paid 30-minute trial. No band score is promised: progress depends on your starting point and the work you do between sessions. See online IELTS tutor for Malaysia, IELTS Speaking tutor for Malaysia and about Mike.

See open slots in Malaysia time

Pick a 60-minute session or, on a first booking, the paid 30-minute trial. Slots show in your own time, one hour ahead of Mike's clock in Hanoi, and your price appears in your own currency on the booking page before you pay.

Common questions

How many IELTS test centres are there in Malaysia?

There is no single count. IDP Malaysia's test-dates page listed 20 IDP test centres when read on 24 October 2026, across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, with two of them in Kota Kinabalu. British Council Malaysia says it offers tests in 17 locations in 7 states, although its table lists 16 entries. ielts.org's finder lists venues of both providers, including one in Sibu that is not on IDP's list. Lists change, so confirm on the provider's booking page.

Which states have IDP test centres in Malaysia?

IDP's list names towns in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Perak, Penang, Sabah and Sarawak. Grouped that way, 14 of the 20 centres are on the peninsula, three are in Sabah and three are in Sarawak. The grouping by state is this page's own arrangement, because IDP's page lists towns.

Is IELTS on paper offered at IDP's Malaysian centres?

IDP's pages do not agree. The introduction on its test-dates page still says you can choose between the computer-delivered and the paper-based formats, but each of the 20 IDP centre pages read on 24 October 2026 has “(IELTS on Computer)” in its heading. Confirm the format with IDP before you book.

Is One Skill Retake available at every IDP centre in Malaysia?

We cannot say that it is. IDP's list tags 15 of the 20 centres and leaves Klang, Miri, Petaling Jaya, Rawang and Shah Alam untagged, yet IDP's own Shah Alam centre page shows sessions labelled “One Skill Retake available”. Because the list and the centre page do not match, ask IDP about the exact session if a retake might matter.

Why does a Melaka venue have “Johor Bahru” in its name on ielts.org?

We cannot say why. The ielts.org record for the Melaka venue has a name that ends in “Johor Bahru”, but its address is in Melaka (Taman Siantan, Melaka 75200), so the address, not the name, shows where it is. Always check the address on the venue page and on your booking confirmation.

Does the British Council have test venues only in Kuala Lumpur and Penang?

No. British Council Malaysia says you can book online or at its offices in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, which is about where to book. Its dates, fees and locations page separately says it offers IELTS tests in 17 locations in 7 states (Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang, Johor, Perak, Sarawak and Sabah), although the table on that page lists 16 entries. ielts.org's finder listed British Council venues in towns including Sibu, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Johor Bahru, Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur in October 2026.

Does Band Booster IELTS register me for the test or hold a place for me?

No. Band Booster IELTS is a private online tutoring service, not a test centre or the exam board, and it is not affiliated with IDP or the British Council. You register with IDP or British Council Malaysia. Mike coaches one-to-one on Google Meet, and the booking page shows your price in your own currency before you pay.
