IELTS Test Centres in Mainland China: A City-by-City Guide to the Registration Site Lists

Last updated:

The IELTS registration site for mainland China (ielts.neea.cn) has three centre lists, and by our count its IELTS on computer list shows 96 centres in 43 cities, led by Beijing with 10 and Shanghai with 8. Your admission card, not the list, gives your room and address; Band Booster IELTS (Mike, CELTA, 8.5 in Speaking) is a private online tutor, not a test centre.

Price: CNY 232.74 for a 60-minute one-to-one lesson; CNY 64.65 for the paid 30-minute trial. Amounts use the same price tiers as the booking page, in your local currency at exchange rates set on 6 October 2026. The booking page shows the exact amount before you pay, and PayPal charges the US-dollar equivalent (USD 34.66 for a 60-minute lesson).

The IELTS registration site for mainland China, ielts.neea.cn, carries three separate centre lists, and by our own count its IELTS on computer list shows 96 centres in 43 cities. This guide reads those lists city by city, explains why your admission card, not the list, gives your room and address, and shows how ielts.org's finder list differs from it. Band Booster IELTS is a private tutor, not a test centre, and does not register you for the test: Mike, a CELTA-certified teacher in Hanoi who scored 8.5 in IELTS Speaking, teaches one-to-one on Google Meet, and your price appears in your own currency on the booking page before you pay. Check that the booking page and Google Meet both open on your network before you book; no band is promised.

The three lists on China's IELTS registration site

The IELTS registration site for mainland China is ielts.neea.cn. It is run with the British Council, and NEEA is the Ministry of Education's examinations authority. The site's Test Centre Information page offers three separate lists:

Every count of the registration-site lists on this page is our own, made on 24 October 2026 by counting the rows under each city. The IELTS on computer page prints no totals and the lists change, so read the numbers as a picture of one day, not a published figure, and open the lists yourself before relying on them.

City by city: the IELTS on computer list

The IELTS on computer list has a button for each of 43 cities, from Beijing to Lanzhou. Counting the rows under each button gives 96 centres. British Council China says it has nearly 100 test centres covering more than 40 cities (see its computer-test page), which fits the list we counted.

Eleven cities have three or more centres. The last two columns show whether each also appears on the Life Skills list and British Council China's One Skill Retake page (both covered below).

Twelve of the other 32 cities show two centres each: Changsha, Dalian, Nanchang, Ningbo, Qingdao, Shenyang, Suzhou, Taiyuan, Tianjin, Wuhan, Xiamen and Zhengzhou. Twenty show one: Changchun, Changzhou, Dongguan, Foshan, Fuzhou, Haikou, Hefei, Hohhot, Kaifeng, Kunming, Lanzhou, Nanning, Nantong, Shijiazhuang, Wenzhou, Wuxi, Xuzhou, Yangzhou, Zhenjiang and Zhuhai. So 23 of the 43 cities show more than one centre. All 43 also appear on the IELTS UKVI on computer list, counted below.

Only Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing have centres whose names begin with British Council. Most other names point to a university, school or education body, and most end with IOC Test Centre. Some point to neither: Wuhan New World Centre IOC Test Centre (its address is Block C, New World Centre) and Shenzhen SEG IOC Test Centre are two examples.

How to read an entry, and why your admission card decides

An entry gives a centre's name and address, and some add a transit note (Wuhan and Suzhou examples are below). Entries also carry the note “Please note: Admission Instructions”, which asks you to read the centre's admission (campus entry) instructions before the test. The note links to an index of per-centre entry-requirements notices, so read the notice for your centre.

The address on the list is not necessarily where every part of your test happens. A notice on the registration site, written in Chinese, says the venue and address of the written and Speaking tests can differ from the centre's listed venue and address. The list itself shows this for some centres: the Heilongjiang University entry in Harbin gives a different building for the written and Speaking tests, and the entries in Zhuhai and Kunming give different rooms.

So the admission card is what counts. British Council China's test-day process page describes this routine:

  1. log in to your personal page on the registration site;
  2. check your candidate number, Speaking time, written and Speaking venue, address and room number there;
  3. print the admission card from that page;
  4. look at a map and choose how you will travel, in advance (the page recommends this).

Add the list's own step: read your centre's admission instructions. This page cannot tell you which room your booking gives you; your admission card can. For the booking steps see how to register for IELTS in mainland China, and for the day itself IELTS test day in mainland China.

Who sets up and cancels test centres

A notice on the registration site says NEEA is responsible for setting up and cancelling test centres in mainland China. Band Booster IELTS is not partnered with NEEA, the British Council, IDP or any test centre, and it does not register anyone for the test. Because centres can be set up and cancelled, confirm yours on the registration site when you book, and again on your admission card.

The UKVI and Life Skills lists

IELTS UKVI on computer

By our count this list shows 95 centres in the same 43 cities, and most centre names carry a _UKVI tag. It is not a copy of the standard list: Chongqing shows two UKVI-on-computer centres against three on the IELTS on computer list. If you need a UKVI test, open the UKVI list for your city and do not assume a standard centre is also a UKVI centre.

IELTS for UKVI Life Skills

This list is short: four centres, one each in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing, all named British Council ... LS Test Centre. Which of the three tests you need is for the organisation asking for your result to say, not this page. Our guide to IELTS for UKVI in mainland China sets out what the UK government's pages say.

How ielts.org's finder list differs

ielts.org has its own test-centre finder, and its China results are a different, shorter list. When we looked on 24 October 2026 it showed 62 results across 31 cities, against 96 centres in 43 cities on the registration site's IELTS on computer list by our count. Every result was tagged Computer; 33 were tagged UKVI Approved and 27 were tagged One Skill Retake, and all 27 of those are centres named IDP IELTS China. Beijing, Harbin, Dalian, Kunming and Lanzhou were among the cities with no entries, although the registration-site list has them.

The finder is live and changes. This page cannot say why the two lists differ. If you book through the registration site, the centre on your booking and your admission card is what counts, whatever a finder shows. If you plan to register with IDP China, check IDP China's own pages for its centres and steps: this page does not cover them.

One Skill Retake venues

British Council China's One Skill Retake page lists 15 centres in ten cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Changsha, Ningbo, Shijiazhuang, Qingdao and Shenyang. It says coverage keeps growing. That is far fewer than the 43 cities on the IELTS on computer list, so a city with a test centre may not appear on the retake page. Which retake venues you see also depends on the source (the finder's 27 One Skill Retake tags are all on centres named IDP IELTS China), so check the provider you booked with.

For who can retake, the limits and how it compares with a full retake, see IELTS One Skill Retake. This page quotes no exam fee and no test date.

When a city has two centres: Wuhan and Suzhou

Wuhan and Suzhou each show two entries on the IELTS on computer list. As printed on 24 October 2026, they show why a city name is not enough:

Where a note lists several routes, only the first is quoted above: the Wuhan and Soochow notes go on to list further metro or bus routes, while the Xi'an Jiaotong - Liverpool note is only bus numbers. The transit notes are the registration site's own text, which we have not checked. Your admission card shows which of the two centres is yours, so plan your journey from the card, not the city name.

Nine cities have their own online IELTS tutor page here, each also covering what is published about test centres there (counts in brackets are ours).

Lessons with Mike, and Google Meet in mainland China

Check Google Meet before you book. Lessons run on Google Meet, and Google services are generally not reachable in mainland China without extra tools. The UK government's China travel advice, read in October 2026, says some services are permanently blocked there, including Google. It does not name Google Meet, so this page cannot say whether Meet opens on your network.

Check that the booking page and Google Meet both open from where you will have the lesson, and message Mike if you are not sure. No other platform is promised. You can reach Mike at mkcenter007@gmail.com or +84 383 390 963 (Zalo, WhatsApp, Telegram); use whichever you can open from where you are.

Mike holds the Cambridge CELTA (July 2017), is based in Hanoi and teaches every session himself, live on Google Meet and in English; his own IELTS Speaking score is 8.5 (About Mike). A session can cover Listening, Reading, Writing (marked against the public band descriptors) or Speaking (Parts 1, 2 and 3), with feedback during the session. No band is promised: progress depends on your starting point and the work between sessions.

The booking page shows times in your own time zone and your price in your own currency before you pay. You can reschedule at no charge up to 12 hours before the slot. Online IELTS tutor for China explains the booking steps, and computer-delivered IELTS in mainland China covers the format of the test itself.

See open slots in your own time zone

Pick a slot on the booking page: times show in your own time zone and your price appears in your own currency before you pay. A paid 30-minute trial can be booked once, on your first booking. In mainland China, check that the booking page and Google Meet both open on your network first.

Common questions

How many IELTS test centres are there in mainland China?

The registration site prints no total, so this is our own count: on 24 October 2026 its IELTS on computer list showed 96 centres in 43 cities. British Council China says it has nearly 100 test centres covering more than 40 cities, which fits that count. Lists change, so open the current list before you plan.

Which city in mainland China has the most IELTS test centres?

By our count of the IELTS on computer list, Beijing has 10 and Shanghai 8, followed by Nanjing and Guangzhou with 5 each. Of the other 32 cities, 12 show two centres and 20 show one.

Is the address on the centre list the address of my test?

Not necessarily. A notice on the registration site says the venue and address of the written and Speaking tests can differ from the centre's listed venue and address, and some entries show a different building or different rooms for the two. Your admission card, printed from your personal page on the registration site, gives your venue, address and room.

Why does ielts.org show fewer centres in China than the registration site?

This page cannot say why the lists differ, but they do. At the time of writing (24 October 2026), ielts.org's finder showed 62 results across 31 cities for China, against 96 centres in 43 cities on the registration site's IELTS on computer list by our count. It had no entries for Beijing, Harbin, Dalian, Kunming or Lanzhou. The finder is live and changes.

Where can I take IELTS UKVI or IELTS for UKVI Life Skills in China?

The registration site's IELTS UKVI on computer list shows 95 centres in the same 43 cities by our count, most names carrying a _UKVI tag, with Chongqing showing two against three on the standard list. The IELTS for UKVI Life Skills list has four centres, one each in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing. Check which test the organisation asking for your result requires.

Who decides which test centres exist in mainland China?

A notice on the registration site says NEEA, the Ministry of Education's examinations authority, is responsible for setting up and cancelling test centres. Band Booster IELTS is a private tutor, not partnered with NEEA, the British Council, IDP or any test centre, and it does not register anyone for the test.

Can I book lessons with Mike from mainland China?

Lessons run over Google Meet, and Google services are generally not reachable in mainland China without extra tools. The UK government's travel advice says some services are permanently blocked there, including Google, but it does not name Google Meet, so this page cannot say whether Meet opens on your network. Check that the booking page and Google Meet both open before you book and message Mike first if you are unsure; no other platform is promised. Your price appears in your own currency on the booking page before you pay.
