The short answer: IELTS does not replace the entry test
If you apply to Bahrain Polytechnic, an IELTS result does not let you skip the English entry test. The Polytechnic's entry tests page says that IELTS and TOEFL are not accepted as part of the application process and will not exempt applicants from the English entry testing. Every applicant sits the English and Mathematics tests for their chosen programme.
I read the Polytechnic's pages on 2026-11-01. Admission rules change, so check the two pages linked here and the Admission Timeline they point to before you act. This page gives no fees and no dates.
What the entry tests are
According to the entry tests page, all applicants must complete the required entry tests for their programme of choice, and these are general English and Mathematics tests. Visual Design applicants must also submit a portfolio.
| Part | What the page says |
|---|---|
| English | The Oxford Online Placement Test, which assesses Use of English and Listening. Sample tests are linked from the page. |
| Mathematics | The Password Mathematics test, with a sample PDF. |
| Length | About 3 hours, continuous, on the entry tests page. The FAQ says about 2.5 to 3 hours including instructions. |
| Standard | Applicants must meet the required standard in both tests to be considered for selection. No score is given on the page. |
Notice what is different from IELTS. The English test described is Use of English and Listening. IELTS also tests Reading, Writing and Speaking, so a good IELTS preparation habit does not map one-to-one onto this test.
Where IELTS still counts: credit recognition
The admission FAQ gives IELTS a different role. An applicant with an IELTS or TOEFL certificate issued no more than two years ago can apply for Credit Recognition after confirming their admission to the Polytechnic. The page adds that there is no guarantee that courses will be equivalent.
- Before admission: the English entry test is required whatever your IELTS result.
- After admission is confirmed: an IELTS certificate issued within two years can be used to apply for credit recognition.
- Equivalence of courses is not guaranteed.
Test day rules to know
The entry tests page lists several rules. Read the page itself for the full list; the main ones are below.
- Late students will not be allowed to enter the test room.
- Test dates cannot be changed.
- Bring the Test Appointment card, your smart card and a calculator. Graphic display and text-save calculators are not allowed.
- Bags and mobile phones are not allowed in test rooms.
- Technical issues may require a re-sit.
What the pages do not tell you
Several things people ask about are simply not on the two pages, so do not assume them.
- The pass mark. The pages say you must meet the required standard in both tests, but give no number.
- Retake rules. The entry tests page does not address them; ask the Polytechnic before you rely on a second attempt.
- The exact question types of the English test, beyond Use of English and Listening. The Polytechnic links sample tests and instructional videos, which are the right place to look.
- Whether you will be called for more. The page says applicants may be invited to further tests or an interview, with details sent by SMS.
The page also offers a Maths Refresher, a sample PDF, a guide video and a calculator tutorial, which are useful if Mathematics is the part you worry about.
A sensible order of steps
- Read both Polytechnic pages and the Admission Timeline for your programme.
- Open the sample tests for English and Mathematics and try them before test day.
- Keep your IELTS certificate if you have one, because it may matter later for credit recognition and has a two-year limit in the FAQ.
- Put the Test Appointment card, smart card and an allowed calculator in your bag the night before.
A small difference between the two pages
The entry tests page says applicants receive their test date and time on a Test Appointment card when they submit their application. The FAQ says the applicant chooses the date and time after paying the application fee. The pages do not explain how these fit together, so follow the instructions you see in your own application account.
How this fits with other Bahrain IELTS questions
This page covers one institution. For the IELTS scores that Bahrain universities ask for, read IELTS scores asked by Bahrain universities. For booking the exam itself, see booking IELTS in Bahrain.
How lessons with Mike can help with this
Band Booster IELTS is not the Polytechnic and not a test centre, and Mike does not coach for the Oxford placement test or the Mathematics test. What he can help with is the IELTS you may need for another university, a credit recognition request or a visa. Mike is a CELTA-certified teacher based in Hanoi with 12+ years teaching English and IELTS in Vietnam, Turkey and Iran, and his own IELTS result is 8.5 in Speaking. Lessons are one-to-one, live on Google Meet, in English, and the booking page shows each slot in your own time zone. Bahrain is four hours behind Hanoi. You can see the calendar and book a lesson, or read about Mike first.
